Huge Cod, Coalfish & Halibut

Norway is a Nordic country in Europe; it covers over 385,207 square kilometres and homes a population of over five million. It shares land borders with Sweden, Finland and Russia and an extensive coastline facing the North Atlantic Ocean and Barents sea.

Norway’s straight coastal perimeter spans 2,650 kilometres; however, add to this the vast number of fjords, islands, and bays, and the figure rises to over 25,000 kilometres. This incredible coastline is a massive part of Norway’s industry; maritime transport, fish farming, and fishing are all key. The waters around the coastline are rich and diverse, thanks to the Gulf Stream and the Arctic Ocean’s currents and the rigorously enforced fishing regulations. It’s no secret that sea fishing in Norway offers some of the best saltwater action in the world, with giant Cod, Halibut, Haddock and Coalfish, and anglers have been visiting from across the globe for many years.

Whether you’re fishing in and around the fjords’ beautiful calm waters for huge Halibut or out in the open ocean searching for mammoth Cod, you can expect some explosive and hectic sport. Off the coastline of the Northeast of the country, you will find the worlds largest population of Cod. These fish, also known as Skrei, are the biggest globally, and Norway currently holds the world record for a rod and reel caught Cod of over 100lb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sea Fishing In Norway

The best sea fishing in Norway is off the Northeastern coast; thanks to the Gulf Stream and the Arctic Ocean’s currents, the plankton mass is most significant here, and so are the numbers of fish that feed off it. In general, the further north you travel, the better it is.

Places such as Havoysund and Soroya are two of the most famous. Soroya is Norway’s fourth-largest island by area and is renowned for the monstrous Skrei Cod. Havoysund, a small village, almost as far north as you can travel, is well known for its colossal Halibut.

Slightly beneath these, you will find destinations such as Vesterålen, Nappstraumen and Å all located on the Lofoten Islands. These are superb mixed fishing destinations, and over the last few years, they’ve made a name for themselves for the fantastic Halibut and Coalfish fishing they have to offer. Each year fish approaching world record sizes get caught.

Saltstraumen Brygge in Bodo benefits from the world’s biggest maelstrom, attracting some great summer Cod and Coalfish numbers.

A little bit further south, in a very weather-protected fjord, is the lovely destination of Sandbakken, which is very good if you prefer more sheltered fishing in Norway. Just around the corner from here on Norway’s largest Island, Senja, is Mefjord Brygge which offers fjord and open ocean fishing.

What Fish Can You Catch?

The main species which attract thousands of travelling sea anglers every year is the Cod. However, Halibut have massively grown in popularity over the last few years, with anglers keen to catch and land these saltwater giants. Coalfish, Haddock, Ling, Redfish and Plaice are also on offer and grow to monumental proportions. Depending on what fish you want to catch, we have the destination for you.

How Do You Fish?

Predominately, most fishing from our camps in Norway is done from a boat, either self-drive or with one of our experienced guides. The majority of our boats are 23.5ft Arronnet aluminium models and come fitted with 150hp Suzuki 4 Stroke engines, one of the most fuel-efficient engines money can buy, and a range of high standard electronics; chart plotters and fish finders. They are exceptionally sturdy even in rough conditions and built to deal with heavy seas. Depending on what destination you visit and what fish you want to catch, you’ll be fishing the open ocean, anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours steam from the harbour and the sheltered fjords.

If you prefer keeping your feet firmly on dry land, then a range of shore fishing is also available, guided by our guide Ross Johnson. Ross is a very well-known angler from the UK with much big fish to his name; he has guided anglers to catch fish over 200lb from the shore. Depending on what you’d like to catch, we have a range of different marks on offer, including jetty’s straight into deep water to the more extreme rock fishing marks to test your skills.

The Tackle

On most of our norway sea fishing holidays, anglers like to take their tackle; however, it’s also available to hire if you wish. The camps supply Westin boat fishing rods and a variety of top-end multipliers. There are also a small number of lighter rods for Plaice fishing. The majority of destinations also boast a fully stocked tackle shop on site that supplies everything you need for your entire weeks fishing.

The exception is our shore fishing camp which currently doesn’t provide terminal tackle but you can hire rods and reels. However, you will have a seat box and a tripod to use issued once you arrive at the camp.

Fully Guided Fishing

We offer a wide range of fully guided sea fishing holidays to Norway, perfect for solo travellers, pairs of friends and even small groups. These trips are ideal for those who want to avoid the pressure of driving a boat, finding the fish or worrying about the weather, and by booking a guided trip, all these fears get alleviated. All you have to concentrate on is enjoying the fantastic fishing on offer.

Our guides are exceptionally experienced and have been fishing the Norwegian waters for many years, and all have the correct qualifications and certificates needed to guide you during your holiday.

Each day our guides will discuss with you what you’d like to fish for and the type of day you’d like to experience; whether you’d like a multi-species day, targeting everything that swims, or an out-and-out monster Halibut hunt, they can tailor it to suit you. Whatever your quarry for the day, your guide will also be on hand to advise about the best tackle, bait, rigs and lures to ensure you maximise your fishing when on the water.

As well as being excellent guides, they are also great people and many, who have been guiding for several years, have formed friendships with those anglers who visit and fish with them yearly.

Peak Season

The fishing season in Norway runs between March and October; however, depending on what you want to catch, there are peak months for each species. If you want the massive Skrei Cod from Soroya and Mefjord on your norway sea fishing holidays, then the peak months are March and April. If you want the huge Halibut and colossal Coalfish from Havoysund and the Lofoten Islands, then the months of June, July and August will put you in with the best chance.
