Exciting Partridge Shooting

Portugal, located in South-Western Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula, covers 92,212 square kilometres and borders the Atlantic Ocean and Spain. The country is divided by the Tagus river, which separates the rugged north from the rolling plains in the south. This varied landscape provides an ideal habitat for all manner of different game species.

Hunting and shooting commence all over Portugal, and the country is one of the most respected shooting destinations in Europe. Famed for its population of well-established Red-Legged Partridge, which receives as much attention as we afford our Greys.

In the Alentejo region, located in the south of Portugal, you’ll find some of the best Partridge shooting in the country’s Herdade Vale do Manantio estate. The estate, steeped in history dating back to the eighteenth century, is one of the most popular destinations for travelling hunters. It was considered the best hunting estate in Portugal by the safari club Lusitania Chapter and won the “Best Outfitter” award.

The big game hunting in Portugal is perhaps less famous than the bird shooting, but it can equally as impressive. Species like Fallow and Red deer, Mouflon, Wild Boar, and Rabbits are all in abundance. The region of Alentejo and Ribatejo is great for all species, and in these areas, hunting is still popular with horses and hounds and stalking and high-seat hunting.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Red-Legged Partridge

Portugal is home to numerous sporting estates on which the native Red-Legged Partridge or Redleg as it’s known, both wild and released, have flourished. Given its proximity to North Africa, the landscape and climate are far drier and hotter than the UK, making it ideal for the Partridge’s breeding and development. This, combined with sensitive conservation and management for the sport and wildlife conducted throughout the country, have seen numbers increase year on year, making it one of the best destinations globally for shooting and hunting the Redleg.

What's The Shooting Like In Portugal?

Thanks to the country’s vast, varied landscape, it’s possible to have more than forty plus different drives to choose from in just a single day. With all these possible scenarios, you’ll never find a drive repeating itself, allowing a multitude of different shooting experiences. In some cases, the Partridges will present themselves at high altitude, the next close to the ground, others bursting the gate, always finding ways to test the attention and speed of the hunter.

HOW PHYSICALLY DEMANDING IS IT?

Like the country itself, the shooting in Portugal is a very laid back affair, and physical exertion is minimal. Usually, you’ll get picked up by the lodges 4×4’s and driven the short distance to the hunting grounds; from there, you’ll have a short walk to your peg, with the guns and ammunition, the responsibility of the Secretarios and loaders. A typical day Partridge shooting can sometimes be punishing on the shoulder, so we’d recommend a decent shoulder pad and shooting vest to help combat this.

Other Activities

Portugal has an ever inviting aura about itself, including many attractive and majestic sightseeing opportunities amongst its glorious and vibrant landscapes, including Cities steeped in history, military architecture and medieval structure.

A tremendous advantage to this destination is the additional activities available. If you’re staying at the Vale do Manantio, there’s a whole host of other activities on offer for the non-hunting companion, such as Horse riding, wine tasting, balloon rides, massages, spa treatments, swimming, shopping and much, much more. There is something for everyone.
