Mission Lodge Alaska sits on the bank of Lake Aleknagik, located in the heart of the world-famous Bristol Bay region. The whole Bristol Bay area and its watershed is among the most essential and fertile Pacific Salmon fishing destinations globally. Each year 40-50 million Sockeye Salmon enter these waters, combining with the trophy Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char & Grayling to make the most fantastic fishing in a spectacular wilderness setting.
Four things that set Mission Lodge apart from alternative lodges in the same region. First, there is no set itinerary or fishing rotation to follow; with over 40 boats stashed within fly distance on various rivers, you will be in control to decide what you want to do. Second is the whole lodge based on single rooms, so there’s no need to share with a stranger and give you personal space at the end of a day fishing. If you combine all these points, location, not set itinerary and all single rooms, it makes Mission Lodge the perfect destination to fish either as a group of friends or as a single angler. Third, each day you will fish with a different guide allowing you to experience each of their special fishing places. Finally, although you are more than welcome to bring all your own tackle, if you prefer not to everything is provided, just bring your clothes and do not forget the camera.
The Bristol Bay region has the most extensive Salmon runs globally, and the sheer numbers of fish that this area supports is mind-boggling. Depending on the season you fish, you will find all five species of Pacific Salmon Kings/Chinook, Silvers/Coho, Sockeye, Chum and Pinks. Also, there is trophy Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Char and Arctic Grayling.
At Mission Lodge Alaksa, you will find yourself fishing a wide variety of waters from small creeks and streams to large rivers. In addition to all this, the Lodge also has three outpost camps with boats scattered throughout the region, some based on exclusive use permits like the Upper Togiak refuge.
Each of your days fishing is based on what you wish to fish for and what rivers you would prefer to fish. Each evening the staff will discuss with you what you would be interested in doing the next day. This allows the fishing guides to tailor the day to suit you.
Depending on the location you are heading for, sometimes you will fly in and meet your guides on the river, who will have all the boats ready to whip you straight of fishing. On other more remote rivers, you may find the guides fly out with you to use one of the 40 plus boats we have stashed in the region.
Mission Lodge Alaska is suitable for experienced anglers right through to complete beginners as they cater to all abilities. The fishing area is so vast, and the sheer number of species and fish to catch means that the guides can tailor what you are fishing for depending on your experience and what you wish to target. The Lodge also recognises that not everyone wants to fish the same. Some of you will be die-hard anglers who want to fish every available minute, and that’s fine. However, they also know that for many, it’s not just about fishing; it’s about the whole experience.
As for physical abilities, as you depart the Lodge each day by either boat or floatplane, there is little walking, so this destination is suitable for all ages and physical fitness. The only thing you need to think about is getting in and out of small floatplanes regularly.
Time to visit will depend on what you wish to target when freshwater fly fishing, if looking for sheer numbers of fish or larger specimens. The watershed of the Bristol Bay region fills with Chinook Salmon in late June and throughout July. King Salmon is always followed closely by Chum Salmon and Sockeye Salmon and provide excellent sport to the end of July. August sees the arrival of the millions of Cohos, also known as the Silver Salmon. These fish come in daily through to mid-september and provide first-class sport for all fly anglers. They are eager to chase flies and can provide lots of action for you every day.
If you are looking for Rainbows and Grayling, these species are present in the rivers all year. In the early season, they can be found in the lower sections and take various flies, plus in the evenings, they provide excellent sport on dry flies. As the season progresses, these fish will follow the Salmon up to the upper reaches feeding on their eggs, where we try to match with egg pattern flies which again provides some fantastic sport.
Therefore if you are looking for the big Salmon, its the early season; you want more mixed fishing with different species and numbers; the middle months are best. If it non-stop action with Silvers and the best of the Rainbows and Grayling, then the back end of the season is best.
The facilities at Mission Lodge are beautiful, all guests’ rooms are spacious and comfortable. All rooms are on a single room basis, with community jack & jill bathrooms. Private suites with private bathrooms are also available for couples or individuals if requested in advance. For two couples or a family, there is also the Owners Suite. This suite comprises a private entrance leading to a main private lounge, of which there are two double bedrooms with two double beds in each room. Each bedroom also has a private bathroom. This stunning suite also has a small private balcony overlooking the lake.
There is a workout area in the main lodge, with table tennis and other board games, a fully stocked bar with all drinks included, plus the fully stocked fly shop. For those looking for relaxation after a long full day landing fish of your dreams, why not indulge in either the onsite Sauna hot tub or treat yourself to a full-body massage.
Outside, the large deck surrounding the lodge is just steps from the dock, where you will find all the floatplanes and boats.
Mission Lodge is often called the best restaurant in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Given the remote nature of Bristol Bay, that might not be saying much. However, the lodge goes to great lengths to fly in the freshest produce and meats available in the Northwest. Even without a major grocery store nearby, the chef creates some fantastic fair which many refer to as ‘Alaskan Gourmet’. You might even consider it high-end comfort food.
If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, Mission Lodge will do its best to accommodate you within reason; be sure to indicate this on your booking form right after booking your trip. It takes months of planning to get things to show up in the remote bush of Alaska magically.
Although the fishing days are fixed, the below itinerary is still flexible should you require additional free days to explore at the beginning or end of your holiday; we can tailor this itinerary to suit you personally. Feel free to talk to our travel consultants who can explain all options available.

Tight Lines
This was my first time to a fishing lodge. I should stop now because it was incredible and nothing else will ever live up to my Mission experience.
The lodging is rustic but very comfortable. The staff was beyond helpful and attentive. Everyone there was there to make sure the visitors had the very best experience.
The activities were better than I could have hoped for...way beyond my expectations. We fished, fished, fished, hiked and viewed bears. The food was delicious! Each night was better than the night before. The staff made sure that we all felt welcome and part of the big picture.
