Description: In the ocean, Pink Salmon are a bright silver fish but after returning to their spawning grounds their colouring changes to grey on the back with a yellowish-white belly. During their spawning migration, all of the males develop a large humped back hence their nickname “humpies”. The Pink Salmon is the smallest species of the Salmon family but this by no means takes anything away from the fun of catching them. These hard fighting freshwater rockets provide the travelling fly angler with great sport when visiting areas such as Canada and California.
Average size: The average size of a pink salmon is around 5 lb with the largest fish on record going 15lb.
Where to catch: This species of Salmon can be found in various waters around the world from the far reaches of Canada and California to the crystal clear pure waters of the rivers of Norway. One of our most popular destinations is the Goodnews River in Alaska. The Goodnews River Lodge is the only fully serviced lodge on the river and because of this, the river receives very little fishing pressure. There is no commercial fishing in the estuary or river allowing all 5 species of Pacific Salmon a free run.

Fishing methods: The Pink Salmon as many of the other if not all of the salmon family care best targeted on fly fishing tactics. Depending on where you are fishing will depend on the tactics used. These can be caught on dry flies off of the top and by larger flies fished subsurface, the pink salmon will always be willing to hit a well-presented fly.
Another way to target the Pink Salmon is by using spinning tackle, casting metal spoons or spinners on a conventional tackle to try to entice a take, Mepps spinners, tobys and devon minnows are all proven fish takers in the salmon lure world.
