For many years now, Sportquest Holidays has been leading the way regarding new destinations, and this destination in Mozambique is going to set the shore fishing market alight. For many years, we have been searching for such a destination that offers anglers the chance to do battle with colossal GT’s without the need to be on a boat, and we would like to introduce you to Baboon Point Lodge in Mozambique.
The moment you land in Mozambique, a representative from Baboon Point fishing lodge will greet you and then escort you via private transfer to the lodge. You will then meet up with your fishing guide, who will discuss what you can expect from your weeks fishing.
This solid tented accommodation with an ocean view is the perfect base for an exciting week surfcasting the coast of Mozambique; you will be in the heart of all the action and steps away from some of the most fish-filled waters in the area.
Mozambique is quickly earning itself a reputation as one of the most exciting fishing and varied destinations globally. Why not take a look at many other saltwater fishing destinations on our Youtube channel
In such areas as Bazaruto Archipelago, Incha, Nacala and the Quirimbas Islands, offshore fishing is second to none with a massive run of big Black Marlin. The run of Black Marlin is the main draw for so many anglers and not to mention the super hot fishing from the shoreline for such species as the huge GT’s, Pompano, Barracuda, tons of Skate and Rays. A little less known species for this area is the Bonefish, and they get big.
The Tented Camp is around 160km from Vilankulo Airport, and with 100km of the drive being on the main road and the last 60km being off-road, it is a true adventure just getting to the camp. The use of some 4X4 vehicles to drive through the African bush truly adds to a great experience.
The accommodation based being only 200m from the shoreline, you are right amongst some of the most fish-filled waters in the area. The fishing split into two sections, the morning session and then the late afternoon-evening session into the dark. Having two sessions will ensure you are fishing when most of the fish are at their most active.
The morning session will start while it is still dark, and after a light breakfast, you will be taken down to some regions of the beach to take advantage of the morning tide. The morning fishing is mainly lure fishing as the fish are very active, chasing lots of baitfish in and around the reefs. You will be fishing the areas between yourself and the start of the reefs, and if that doesn’t work, then fishing over the reefs will be your next port of call. Here is a really useful blog on top 10 tips for successful popper fishing
At around 11 am, you will then make your way back to Baboon point fishing lodge, where you are free to relax and even have a siesta while the guides set the tackle for the late afternoon session.
The late afternoon session will generally start around 4 pm, and you will fish a couple of hours into the dark. The fishing method is entirely your choice, but the guides highly recommend live baiting in too dark as this is when the real monsters come out to play. A fish called a green spot (baitfish) of around 5lb would be hooked up on a slider then let swim out to the kill zone where the predators are lining up for the feast.
You can, of course, lure fish the evening session, and the guides will recommend certain areas for the best chances. Still, once you see one of these live baits leisurely swim out into the sea, then suddenly, the line starts to pour off the reel; as the bait gets eaten by something substantial, you may find yourself giving it a go.
The guides at this destination are masters in their fields, and you will soon realise this once they start to put you in the right place at the right time. The guides are entirely used to a wide variety of fishing techniques, from bait fishing, lure fishing or even fly fishing. They have seen it all and tried it all, so if you fancy trying something a little different and you have bought the correct gear, these guides will make it happen.
Baboon point lodge is an exclusive fishing lodge. We made the lodge as comfortable as possible. Our main objective is to ensure that our clients catch as many fish as possible. Due to the lodge’s remoteness and the fact that we are the only people who fish in this area, there is a perfect chance of catching that fish of a lifetime. Baboon Point lodge is built in the beautiful white dunes of central Mozambique and situated under some big Casuarina trees’ shade. It is only 200m from the water’s edge.
The lodge consists of a tented camp built on wooden decking. Five units sleep, two people. The units are each fitted with a toilet, basin and shower. The kitchen, bar, dining room, and lounge situated in the lodge’s centre with a deck and beautiful sea view.
The meals will consist of a mixture of traditional South African meals and Mozambique speciality dishes. Our chef will bake fresh bread and conventional pao rolls daily. We will also do some traditional South African braais (BBQ) at the lodge or beach.
The warm weather and tropical waters make it a perfect fishing venue and offer some of the most beautiful African bush scenery and amazing long white sandy beaches. The water is always crystal clear, ideal for a quick snorkel to cool off.

An afternoon session typically starts around 4 pm, and you will be taken to some slightly deeper water to mainly fish with live baits on zip sliders. This is by far the best method to target the real big GT’s or Sharks.
After your afternoon session, fishing a couple of hours into the dark, you will be taken back to the lodge, where you will either be treated to a traditional BBQ or home-cooked meal.

This area is famous for the huge GT’s that patrol the shoreline, and a carefully placed lure of your choice or a big live bait will tempt most of these GT’s and if you fancy targeting the sharks, then we would strongly recommend a big live bait.
Whatever you choose to target in Mozambique, make sure you are ready for an extremely long battle as these fish fight very hard in the surf and do not give themselves up easily.

For anyone looking for a true adventure holiday then I thoroughly recommend you take a look at Baboon Point. The fishing was simply incredible and the adrenaline rush was like nothing I'd ever experienced before. The highlight of the week was hooking and landing a GT which topped the scales at just over 50lb. A special mention to the guides and staff who were fantastic from start to finish.
What a destination! It may be remote and it may take a little while to get there, but it was totally worth it. The fishing from the shore was explosive and watching a GT inhale your lure and charge off at a hundred miles an hour was simply incredible. I don't think it's a sight or feeling I'll ever get bored off.
From start to finish my trip to Baboon Point was first class. The lodge, set in some extraordinary surroundings, was comfortable and despite being incredibly remote offered everything I needed for the duration of my stay. The fishing was super exciting and I landed numerous Giant Trevally, a range of smaller Trevally, plus Queenfish and Mackerel to name a few.
