Location
You will be fishing Jeffrey’s Bay which is a small town in South Africa, located on what is known as the garden route this settlement looks out onto the wild nutrient-rich Indian Ocean. This beautiful destination is located 45 miles west of Port Elizabeth and is home to some of the most naturally diverse surroundings you will come across. Jeffreys Bay is a popular tourist destination because of its surfing opportunities and its amazing blue flag beach. Jeffreys Bay is famous for abundant seashells, great seafood and calamari. Every year, migrating whales also make their way to Jeffrey’s Bay to give birth, and whales can be seen breaching almost every day during the season. Just northeast of the town lies the Kabeljou nature reserve. It is a walk-about reserve, well known to anglers for a diverse number of fish. The Kabeljous estuary is one of the best-preserved estuaries in the Eastern Cape. The lagoon is home to waterfowl, herons, and a variety of waders. Nearby, the Seekoi nature reserve lies between Aston Bay and Paradise Beach. The reserve lies on the estuary formed by the Seekoei and Swart rivers. The reserve is rich in birdlife with over 120 species of birds. The lagoon is also home to numerous Red-knobbed coots and small antelope. There is also a circular hiking trail that takes about three hours to complete. The trail starts with a trip on a raft across the lagoon and runs through fynbos and subtropical vegetation.
Fishing
The fishing in Jeffrey’s Bay can only be described as phenomenal, these waters are full of big Sharks including Bronze Whalers, Ragged Tooth and the super-hard fighting Bull Shark. In fact, Jeffery’s Bay is renowned as one of the best places in the world to target and catch big Ragged-tooth Sharks so if that is a species that you wish to target then this is the trip for you. Add to this a wide variety of other species including Duck-Billed Rays, Blue-Rays, SmoothHound, Sand sharks, Spotted Gully sharks and Kabeljou there is something for everybody here and anglers will be left wondering what fish will bite next. The Sharks that can be caught here reach huge sizes with 400lb plus specimens a real possibility and with much bigger fish swimming these waters if you hook into one you had better be prepared for a fight like no other, these fish will hit hard and then run fast. When fishing for the Sharks you will be ledgering baited traces from the shore, these big baits will release a scent trail in the water that will prove irresistible to any predator that is in the area leading them to hone in on whatever is on your hook and then hopefully they will chow down making your ratchet scream as this monster of a fish makes a bid for freedom. The tackle supplied is well up to the job of landing these big fish with top-end rods, reels line and end tackle all being used to ensure that you have the best possible chance of landing a fish once hooked. The fishing is mainly done from sandy beaches areas, rocky ledges and other shore areas meaning the water is easily accessible for the safe landing of the fish and also meaning that while playing the fish you will be in the best possible location to play it.
