This is one holiday where you can just turn up and fish with no extras to worry about. Our experienced guide that you will be fishing with will be on hand at all times to assist you with everything that you will need, his advice will be the best you can get and with him helping out with casting, baiting up and landing the fish all you have to worry about is will you be able to defeat the monsters that lurk in these waters. This is a holiday that every angler who enjoys fishing from the shore just has to do at least once in their lives, set in stunning surroundings and with fish that are of sizes you will not have seen on the UK shores your experiences once you have visited Jeffrey’s Bay will leave you wanting to return year after year and will give you memories that will forever stay in your mind.

You will be fishing Jeffrey’s Bay which is a small town in South Africa, located on what is known as the garden route this settlement looks out onto the wild nutrient-rich Indian Ocean. This beautiful destination is located 45 miles west of Port Elizabeth and is home to some of the most naturally diverse surroundings you will come across. Jeffreys Bay is a popular tourist destination because of its surfing opportunities and its amazing blue flag beach. Jeffreys Bay is famous for abundant seashells, great seafood and calamari. Every year, migrating whales also make their way to Jeffrey’s Bay to give birth, and whales can be seen breaching almost every day during the season. Just northeast of the town lies the Kabeljou nature reserve. It is a walk-about reserve, well known to anglers for a diverse number of fish. The Kabeljous estuary is one of the best-preserved estuaries in the Eastern Cape. The lagoon is home to waterfowl, herons, and a variety of waders. Nearby, the Seekoi nature reserve lies between Aston Bay and Paradise Beach. The reserve lies on the estuary formed by the Seekoei and Swart rivers. The reserve is rich in birdlife with over 120 species of birds. The lagoon is also home to numerous Red-knobbed coots and small antelope. There is also a circular hiking trail that takes about three hours to complete. The trail starts with a trip on a raft across the lagoon and runs through fynbos and subtropical vegetation.

The fishing in Jeffrey’s Bay can only be described as phenomenal, these waters are full of big Sharks including Bronze Whalers, Ragged Tooth and the super-hard fighting Bull Shark. In fact, Jeffery’s Bay is renowned as one of the best places in the world to target and catch big Ragged-tooth Sharks so if that is a species that you wish to target then this is the trip for you. Add to this a wide variety of other species including Duck-Billed Rays, Blue-Rays, SmoothHound, Sand sharks, Spotted Gully sharks and Kabeljou there is something for everybody here and anglers will be left wondering what fish will bite next. The Sharks that can be caught here reach huge sizes with 400lb plus specimens a real possibility and with much bigger fish swimming these waters if you hook into one you had better be prepared for a fight like no other, these fish will hit hard and then run fast. When fishing for the Sharks you will be ledgering baited traces from the shore, these big baits will release a scent trail in the water that will prove irresistible to any predator that is in the area leading them to hone in on whatever is on your hook and then hopefully they will chow down making your ratchet scream as this monster of a fish makes a bid for freedom. The tackle supplied is well up to the job of landing these big fish with top-end rods, reels line and end tackle all being used to ensure that you have the best possible chance of landing a fish once hooked. The fishing is mainly done from sandy beaches areas, rocky ledges and other shore areas meaning the water is easily accessible for the safe landing of the fish and also meaning that while playing the fish you will be in the best possible location to play it.

While on your South African shore fishing holiday you will be guided by renowned South African shore fishing guide Gerhard Guse. Gerhard has many years of experience fishing for Sharks from the South African shoreline and is very highly regarded amongst the fishing community in South Africa. He will be on hand to look after you while you fish helping with everything from baiting and casting out to giving advice when needed and landing your fish. When fishing from the shore in South Africa and using light tackle you will have your own rod ensuring that you will be getting the most out of your fishing time. When you are targeting the monster Sharks that inhabit these waters you will be on a rotation with the rods that are in the water, ensuring that everybody gets a chance of hooking one of these massive toothy predators. Gerhard will aid you every step of the way while fishing making sure that you have the utmost chance of landing your fish once hooked.

Questions & Answers

Where is the accommodation?

The accommodation is located under an hour outside Jeffery’s Bay and is very close to the seafront. The location of the Seashells Luxury Apartment means that you could well be fishing right on your doorstep for the monsters that inhabit this shoreline. This accommodation is also located nearby to the local restaurants that you will be eating at in the evenings.

Where do they fish?

The shore fishing is carried out here in the Indian Ocean, you will be casting from beautiful sandy beaches and rugged rock marks into the surrounding waters that hold the amazing fish that you wish to target. Do not be fooled though even fishing close in can wield some true monsters of the deep. You could well find these huge sharks swimming right under your feet and hitting your baits that have just been gently cast out.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

The marks can be as close as a 15-minute drive from your accommodation. Depending on where has been fishing well and also the surf and weather conditions you could also be travelling up to an hours drive from the accommodation to reach the fishing grounds.

What fish will I catch?

When fishing in Jeffrey’s Bay you will be mainly targeting the huge Sharks and Rays that swim through the area. These species include Bronze Whaler Sharks, Ragged Tooth Sharks, Black Stingrays and Duckbill Rays.

How many fish will I catch?

This can vary due to weather and tides etc, you are fishing for big fish so the action will not be constant but when you do get a run it could well be the fish of a lifetime. However, when fishing for the smaller species the action can be quite busty with species such as Kabeljou and Steenbras hitting your baits.

How do they fish?

This holiday is all surfcasting, this means that baited rods are cast from the shore and then you will wait for an indication that a fish has picked up your bait. You will soon know if a fish has picked up your bait though, the big sharks here will just run hard making the ratchet scream and you will then be hooked into something that could well prove to be monstrous. These are fish of a lifetime so be prepared to dig in deep and be prepared for the fight.

Do the guides speak English?

The guides speak very good English and will be able to help you with everything that you need.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This destination is perfect for a huge variety of anglers from beginners to the most expert of anglers. The fishing can be physically demanding though as the large species of fish that inhabit this area really pull back and fight times of over an hour are not uncommon. But if the fight gets too much for you the guides will be on hand to take the rod and give you rest.

What skill level is required?

General knowledge of fishing from the shore is an advantage but not necessary. The guides are there to help you achieve what you want out of your holiday and they want you to catch fish so they will help you with everything that you need to ensure your holiday is as perfect as it can be.

How physically demanding is this trip?

On the whole, this trip is not that physical apart from playing the big fish once they are hooked. These fights can last well over an hour so be prepared to sit it outs as a big shark tries its best to shake the hook and leave you fishless.

When to go?

The fishing off the shore in South Africa runs all year round but is best between the months of October – April, this is when the big sharks move in closer to the shoreline and the fishing is at its best.

How to get there?

The best route to get to Jeffery’s Bay from the UK is London Heathrow to Johannesburg. Once at Johannesburg you will then take a short internal flight then to Port Elizabeth Airport.

What is the accommodation like?

The apartments we use are very nice and plenty of room. These apartments are located on the beautiful Indian Ocean and have ample space for the anglers to relax in between fishing times. Add to this that the fishing can be done from right on your doorstep where some monster fish have been caught this really is a stand out destination for shore anglers to visit.

What is the food like?

Breakfast is served continental style with a choice of many bowls of cereal, fresh fruits and yoghurt and even bacon and eggs. Lunches are provided in a pack lunch style on the beach and include rolls, crisps and snack bars. There are also chances of BBQ’S on the beach for lunch. Evening meals are served at the accommodation and can be anything from fresh fish, lamb chops and local meats including antelope steaks.

Is fishing tackle provided?

You will be supplied with tackle for every eventuality whilst fishing at Jeffreys Bay. This includes the heavy tackle needed to target the monster sharks that swim these waters and the lighter tackle for targeting the smaller species.

Is Internet and phone signal available?

The phone signal in Jeffery’s Bay is good and along with the free WI-FI in the Apartments, you will be able to access all your needs.
