The fully hosted Kalum River Lodge holiday has been making dreams come true for many years now, and it’s no wonder when you get to witness the fantastic fishing that this part of the world has to offer. Hosted holidays were created to help either single rods or small groups to travel with like-minded people. You will get to benefit from having one of Sportquests seasoned hosts travel with you, making sure that you navigate through all the airports and more importantly, you will get to feast off their vast amount of knowledge. So if you are travelling alone or would like to travel within a group, we can highly recommend this fully hosted holiday.

The Salmon Fishing Skeena River region and the Kalum River Lodge offers diversity and a long season that starts in early spring and continues through to late Fall. Renowned for its run of Steelhead, the largest anywhere globally, it’s also home to all five species of Pacific Salmon. They all run the various river systems at different times during the season, adding incredible variety to a day on the water. As well as significant numbers of fish, the system is home to some true giants and holds the world record for both Steelhead on the fly and conventional tackle and two world records for Chinook, King Salmon. The fishing, combined with a backdrop of some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet, will not only make your experience all the more pleasurable but will also leave an everlasting impression.

Skeena River Fishing Guides

Freshwater fly fishing anglers travel from all around the world to fish the legendary waters of British Columbia, Salmon Fishing Skeena River and its tributaries as it’s one of the few places in the world where you can catch Steelhead and all five species of Salmon in a week. This fantastic experience brings many anglers back year after year. Depending on which river you’re fishing, the time of year and for what species, the most effective fly fishing methods are using double-handed rods and Spey lines. In some parts, it’s also vital to have heavy sinking tips as the Salmon can often be found tight to the bottom. For targeting the giant Salmon species and Steelhead, you will need long casts, heavy lines and large weighted flies. Each time you cast your fly on the Salmon Fishing Skeena River, there’s the potential it could be snaffled by a Salmon of a lifetime, with migrating, record fish swimming up the rivers and tributaries all day, every day.

Kalum River Lodge has a team of excellent guides who have a wealth of knowledge on the techniques and tactics needed to fish Canada’s legendary Salmon rivers. They’re there to ensure that all travelling fly anglers enjoy the best fishing experience possible and can tailor their guiding expertise to cater for novice fisherman through to the experts. The guides will work with you as much or as little as you require, but one thing is for sure, and that is all they will go the extra mile in search of your fish of a lifetime.

When to fish

One of the many great things about the Salmon Fishing Skeena River region and the Kalum River Lodge is the length of the season. Whereas many other destinations in the world have limited weeks, the season in British Columbia runs from early spring and continues through to late Fall.

Spring Salmon Season

The first trips for Steelhead begin in mid-March and continue until early May; it’s possible to catch some of the biggest fish that inhabit the waterways at this time of year. From late April to early May, the Steelhead are joined by the Chinook Salmon, and the last few weeks of May and the first few weeks of June can be an excellent time to catch the biggest of the species. The Chinook record for the May fishery is a monster of 83lb. As well as the Kalum, there are a host of other coastal rivers which welcome fresh runs of spring Steelhead, with these fish being extra lively and offering some wonderful sport. In addition to this, there is some first-class Trout fishing to be enjoyed as the fish move around the rivers chasing emerging salmon fry.

Summer Salmon Season

Summer Chinook fishing starts around the middle of June and goes through until August, and at this time of year, the river sees the most significant numbers of fish and the largest specimens. It was at this time of year when world recording breaking fish of 99lb was landed. By mid-July, Steelhead, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum Salmon all populate the rivers, and this is the ideal time for anglers to catch a variety of species in one trip. From early August to September, the main run of summer Steelhead, Coho, Sockeye and Pink Salmon all begin to migrate. At this time of year, the river is easy to wade, and the weather and water conditions are generally very stable.

Fall Salmon Season

The Fall is associated with Coho and Steelhead and is a perfect time for those who wish to combine great fishing with a wilderness experience and breathtaking scenery. Anglers can often experience several different rivers in one trip.

Salmon Fishing Canada

Steelhead

Steelhead is a sea-run Rainbow Trout that usually returns to freshwater to spawn after two to three years at sea. The Skeena features the world’s most extensive run of these fish and holds the world record captured on rod and line. With their stunning chrome silver bodies and rugged, acrobatic fighting displays, they’re one of the most sought after fish by freshwater fly fishing anglers. The spring run of these fish is between March and the end of May, and the summer run between July and November. They can weigh anywhere between 10lb and 35lb, with an average weight of around 15lb.

Chinook Salmon

The Chinook, also known as the King or Spring Salmon, are one of the most popular with anglers. They grow the largest, fight the hardest and possess extreme power. The Skeena River had produced fish to over 90lb, with two world record claims weighing in at 92lb and 99lb. They can be an intimidating challenge for even the most seasoned fly angler, and many get left with broken tackle after battling with these Salmon Fishing Skeena River monsters. The spring season for the Chinook runs from April to June and the summer run from June to early August.

Coho Salmon

The Coho are the most aggressive of all the Salmon species. Their willingness to hit an angler’s fly, combined with the fact they often get found in large numbers, are wonderfully marked and fight incredibly hard, all make them an excellent target for fly anglers. One of the great things about fishing for Coho’s is that on many of the smaller clear rivers, they can be sight fished, which is, without doubt, one of the best ways to catch any Salmon. The peak time for these fish runs between August and November, and they average around 15lb, although specimens to over 30lb get landed every season.

Fly Fishing British Columbia

Sockeye

The Sockeye migrate up the Skeena in large numbers, and they can be abundant, providing anglers who fish for them with many hook-up opportunities per day. Averaging between 4lb to 7lb, they are one of the smaller Salmon species, but what they lack in size, they make up for in fighting ability. Pound for pound, they’re one tough fish, jumping, running and turning, testing an angler’s skill. The peak time for these fish is from mid-July to September.

Chum Salmon

The Chum Salmon are comparable with King Salmon; they’re equally powerful, aggressive and return to the coastal rivers in large numbers. Their distinct colouring makes them unique, and they’re also popular amongst fly fishers, who have landed Chums to over 30lb through the seasons. Anglers fishing between July and August will stand the best chance of catching Chum and can expect Salmon averaging around 15lb.

Pink Salmon

Like the Chum, the most abundant of all Salmon species, the Pink Salmon is one of the smallest, averaging between 4lb and 7lb. The male fish get distinguished by a large hump that develops on their backs soon after entering the river, and these plentiful fish can provide some excellent sport. Freshwater fly anglers can expect many hook-ups per day, especially when fishing between the peak months of July to September.

Char & Trout

Char, Cutthroat and Bull Trout inhabit all the northern rivers in British Columbia, adding more variety to an already diverse fishery. They can be expected all year round and offer something different amongst the Salmon.

Salmon Fishing Tackle

Rods for fishing the Salmon Fishing Skeena River need to be between 7-weight and 9-weight, with single-handed switch and double-handed rods all used. You can match these with a suitable large arbour fly fishing reel that can hold at least 200 yards of backing.

Line wise, shooting heads with loops or weight forward fly lines with interchangeable tips are perfect. The Skagit’s are popular with the Spey casters for casting the more significant sink tips and flies. A variety of leader and tippet materials in light, medium, heavy and extra heavy should cover most water conditions you will encounter. For some water, you can also use the Mow tips with a floater and a short sinking tip for getting behind larger rocks.

There’s a whole host of fly patterns that work well for Steelhead and Salmon Fishing Skeena River, Intruders, Pick ‘Yer Pockets, leeches, shrimp patterns and Popsicles, to name a few. Popular colours include Black, purple, blue, pink, orange and chartreuse. Single barbless hooks are mandatory, and for most conditions, a size two hook is sufficient.

The wading isn’t difficult on the Skeena, but a good set of chest waders recommended for warmth and to manage deep water when you need to. Given the climate in Canada and the fact that temperatures can be variable even in the summer, it’s a good idea to bring plenty of layers.

Accommodation

In keeping with Kalum River Lodges commitment to provide accommodation, food and hospitality to the highest standard in 2017, they opened their brand new lodge on the banks of the Skeena river, the ‘Wild Rivers Lodge’. This bespoke new lodge boasts stunning views of the world-renowned Skeena River and the surrounding mountains.

All guests can enjoy single rooms with a luxurious queen or double bed and a private ensuite bathroom.

The lodge has a large open plan living/dining area that becomes the focal point each day for customers to relax and unwind after a great days fishing.

After a full day of fishing, guests can enjoy a delicious gourmet-style home-cooked meal in the lodges grand dining room. The food at this lodge is incredible, and Deanna, one of the owners, is a fantastic cook, and the freshly cooked meals can compete with top restaurants.

Another advantage of staying at Wild River Lodge is that even after a full day of fishing, you can fish from right outside the accommodation doors if you wish.

The main rivers you will fish are the Skeena, Kitimat and the Kalum Rivers.

The highlight of my trip was catching all 5 types of salmon which was my main aim although I only just managed it by catching my only coho with 1 hour to go on the last day and it was just one of many salmon caught for the week (80 +) The guides are spot on with all their information and the staff at the at the lodge deserve a special mention especially rachelle and Craig although I'm about half a stone heavier with the superb food !

Kevin

Just back from the fabulous Kalum River Lodge and must say Andrew and Deanna run the best lodge I have visited so far. The food was fantastic, the lodge was exceptionally clean and we'll maintained, the boats were well equipped and fit for purpose as were the vehicles used. Andrew and his team of guides were some of the most knowledgeable I have come across and gave me great help with my newly found love of Spey casting.

The flies which were recommended in their pre trip info all worked well (just make sure you take plenty or you can purchase them at the lodge as to catch the salmon you need to be down on the bottom and you will inevitably find some snags).

The group caught each of the salmon species and some lucky souls even caught steelhead. Sad to say I was not one of the lucky ones but it just gives me a good reason to return. I highly recommend one of these group trips to anyone looking to visit Canada or anywhere else as the friends you make and the banter you have will make it a trip to remember.

Tight lines to all my newly found friends and hope to meet you all again.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Kevin thank you kindly for taking the time to complete the customer feedback form as its important to both us and the lodge to make sure we are managing all these tours correctly.

Also may I add it was a pleasure to host you again on this trip, I agree with all the words about the lodge and staff it was and is a great destination. Unfortunately like you the Steelhead also managed to avoid my flies but like you said its the perfect excuse to return.

I must admit though those Chum Salmon on the Kitimat take some beating, what such hard fighting fish on the fly.

PS a big thanks for tying us loads of flies for the trip :)

I look forward in fishing with you again soon.

Great trip. Good company, well organised and a lot of fun. The Lodge was clean and comfortable and the food was spot on.

I struggled with the fishing on the first day but after working on the techniques with the help of the knowledgable guides I ended up catching my share of some fantastic fish..

I rarely see my backing but on this trip I had to repair the knot connecting it to the fly line as it had been ripped through the rod rings so many times.

The usual set up was a double handed rod and heavy sink tips. I stuck with a 10ft single handed 8 weight and a Teeny T 300 line. I'm glad I did, it may have been harder work but it was a lot of fun as the week progressed.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

John

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feed back form, plus your comments during the trip and via e-mail. All these points help us to maintain and constantly improve the customer service we provide to everyone.

I loved the comment about catching your share of the fish :) as from now on we can only refer to you as Steelhead John, being the group leader with this species.

You fished hard and worked well all week so you deserved every fish that you caught.

As requested I will look at getting you added to the trip again next year as I am sure that the unfinished business you have involves some huge Kings on the Kalum River, as that day with Ken was a real day to remember.

Talk soon kind regards Peter

Response from Resort Manager

It is good to hear such positive guest feedback.

All of us at the Kalum River Lodge really enjoyed your hosted week.
It was good to see everyone catching some super fish and for a few lucky anglers some nice early season Steelhead.

We look forward to next year's hosted trip and judging from the feedback, several of this years group will be back again for some more great fishing.

Thanks for joining us on the trip, your company was entertaining as always. I am glad that you and everyone else had a great time, it was also good to see that you finally got to land some of the bigger fish that you had been hooking all week. It seemed at one point that the biggest fish in the river wanted to make a dive for your flies so they could give you a good run all over the river. Hey but thats part of the fun of fishing.

I look forward in having you along on another fly fishing trip soon.

Paul

I really appreciated the fact that I was part of a group. The banter and evening relaxation with the group made a big difference to the trip.

The fishing was OK for the time of year (but you should really schedule a trip 1-2 weeks later at this location if you want to target steelhead & coho). The guides were very pleasant but they struggled to find multiple Skeena fishing locations for such a big group. The Kitimat fishing did offer a good opportunity to catch a few big chum and I really enjoyed these, especially the second trip.

I wasn't expecting to share a room - this was a surprise when I got there.

A pity that I wasn't able to take a separate rod tube given the spare luggage capacity of the group.

The room quality was acceptable, no more. I also missed not having the proper Canadian breakfast available(pancakes, bacon, eggs, maple syrup) - the continental breakfast was basic and rushed.

BA/Air Canada customer service was really bad pre-trip. Unable to check in online or arrange extra bag.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Paul

Thanks for the feedback glad you enjoyed the banter of the group as it is great all travelling and sharing the fishing with like minded people.

I know what you mean about the week, however we pick this week to give people more choice of species and a great introduction to Salmon fishing. As you know from many previous trips there is no one magic week where you can catch everything in a peak time.

A am sorry that you did not realise that the accommodation was based on shared rooms, it is on the paperwork, but perhaps we should make it more clear. I must say that both myself and other customer reviews believe the accommodation is more than just basic, its a lovely home stay and welcoming lodge.

In relation to breakfast, I wish I had known as Deanna is happy to accommodate where ever possible and we could have sorted this for you in the mornings. I am sure you will agree however that both the packed up lunches for fishing were amazing some of the best I have experienced on lots of travels. Also the evening meals are to die for. Deanna's cooking was first rate and nothing was any problem, I do not eat fish so on the night the group all had BBQ fresh salmon she with no problems cooked me an alternative dinner.

Glad to see that you gave us a good review for our services and I hope to arrange something else for you again in the future.

Kind Regards Peter

Response from Resort Manager

Thank you Paul for your review and we are appreciative of any suggestions our guests might have to make their holiday as good as it can be.

For this group we were very selective in the locations we chose so the fishing would suite the varied abilities of the group. I have been fishing the Skeena for more than 40 years and have been the Owner and Head Guide of Kalum River Lodge for 26 years. With over 40 miles of the Skeena to fish I must say that we do not struggle to find adequate water for our guests.

As Peter has highlighted, this week was chosen for the group to provide all the salmon species and a chance of catching early Steelhead. We were very pleased that the anglers landed all five species of Pacific salmon, Steelhead and Dolly Varden during the week. The whole group enjoyed the variety and considered the fishing and catching to be very good. For anglers wanting to target specific species there are different prime times depending on the specific target fish.

We go to great lengths to cater for our guests' individual needs and guests are asked upon arrival if they have any dietary requirements or special requests. If the kitchen staff are told by a guest that they would like something different then we will try our best to accommodate their request. We pride ourselves in providing a personalized service and strive to ensure that our guests have everything they require to make their stay at the lodge a comfortable and memorable one.

From the comments left by other members of the group it looks as though they all had a super trip and one guest, a well-traveled international angler, wrote that Kalum River Lodge was the "best lodge I have visited so far". We have also been told this by many anglers from all over the world who have stayed with us. Please take a look at the Guest Book page on our website to what our guests have to say about us.

Just a note to thank you for a very enjoyable trip.

The hospitality shown to us all by Andrew and Deanne was exceptional. The patience and knowledge of the guiding again was excellent and informative. As a beginner I learnt more about spay casting and salmon fishing than, as an occasional fly fisherman, I had in the last ten years.

The group led by Peter and Tracy was very friendly and made me feel most welcome.

This was my first trip with Sportquest and it will not be my last.

A big thank you to all concerned.

I loved having you with us on the first day of fishing as I still can remember you catching your first salmon before any of us had even stepped in to the water.

I will be collating all the pictures and distributing out to everyone soon.

I look forward in managing any future bookings for yourself in the future. We have lots of fly fishing holidays to tempt you

Hi Peter,Just quick email firstly to thank you for supplying me a first class fishing experience. my Holiday to Kalum Lodge ,was excellent.

Great Lodge second to none immaculate very professional home from home.
Great Food to die for and Andrew and Wife brilliant team.

Great Fishing shame about barbless hooks , I lost three very large fish of a lifetime ,but rules are rules.

Guides all of them brilliant and learnt a lot.

Scenery to die for.

I only have one criticism we had dinner after fishing we chatted about the day and had a great social evening, but it was not discussed in detail all our options and detail of the different waters were we could fish for the next day.

I felt I missed the chance of fishing a different water ,I found out to late to choose .
If you want to catch fish Kalum Lodge is the place
If you want a fishing holiday of a lifetime Kalum Lodge

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Thanks for your feedback and I look forward chatting on the phone to you.

Shame you lost a few good fish but as you say rules are rules, however the good thing is there are alway plenty more fish of a lifetime in the river waiting to eat your fly again.

I look forward in assisting you again on another great Salmon fishing trip.

I thought the holiday was superb as in 2014. The lodge had a friendly family atmosphere and the local guides were excellent. I caught 51 fish for the week with the highlight being the very last day. The combination of the run of fresh, sea-liced Sockeye Salmon, The large Coho Salmon and achieving my ambition of catching two Steelhead made for the best days fishing of my life.

I would recommend this trip to anyone.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Tim it was such great news to hear that you finally got what you wanted some Steelhead action. Even when I spoke to John he said one of the highlights of his trip was being there when you caught those 2 fish as they meant so much to you.

Again thank you for your custom and I am sure we will get you on to the fish next year but in Norway this time.

Again thanks a lot Regards Peter

Another memorable week at The Kalum River Lodge. Great fishing and a great lodge. Very many thanks to Deanna and Andrew for looking after us so well and to Andrew, Pierrot and Glen for the expert guiding.

A brief fishing report from my perspective as requested:

A memorable week, what I really like is the variety of fishing on offer from the 40 metre wide Kitimat to the 400 metre wide Lower Skeena. Plus a challenging day on the fast flowing Kalum and then the runs on the Upper Skeena.

Fishing wise I landed 55 fish, (24 Pink, 15 Chum, 9 Sockeye, 3 Dolly Varden, 2 Coho, 1 Chinook and 1 Steelhead). I had brief encounters (some not so brief) with at least the same number of fish again that did not make the bank.

My fishing highlights were:
A 25lb Chum on the first day.
The first 5 fish on the second day being 5 different species.
Seeing Tim completely made up landing a steelhead lunchtime on the last day after 2 years of trying and then catching a 12lb Steelhead myself to complete a week grand slam.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

John it was a pleasure to have you as always. So glad Steelhead John got a few more fish. I bet you are already looking forward to your return trip in just over 1 months time (Prime Steelhead time)

Peter/Mel/Mike,

We had a fantastic holiday and everything ran like clockwork as usual thanks to Mel and the team at sportsquest in summary world class fishing if not the best, in a superb and faultlessly run lodge – what more could one ask for !

We had tonnes of fish – 191 between the 2 of us for the week hooked and played and 56 landed. Not bad given we spent 3 full days purely chasing Steelheads and had a half day off.

I’ll be going back next year, maybe a week or so later and will speak with Mark and Ron to see if they want to come. Maybe we can sort out the arrangements in a week or two.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hey so glad you liked it or should I say loved it. I said you would not believe just how good the fishing was and how much you would enjoy fighting those Chum Salmon.

Just give me a call when you are free and we can look at sorting out dates for the return trip next year.

My recent trip with Sportquest to Kalum Lodge was a lifetime experience fulfilled.

I found the accommodation was very good and I have to say that the food was brilliant, which together created a good atmosphere at the lodge.

The scenery was magnificent with the snow capped mountains, tree lined river scene.

I really enjoyed the fishing and want to express my thanks to all the guides who all looked after us well making sure they put us on fish, which resulted in me catching my largest salmon to date.

This experience is one that I will never forget and could only be put down to a combination of reasons I have expressed. A big thank you to everyone involved.

Everyone on the trip including myself had a great time with lots of fish. I have never caught so many salmon in a week and did not even think that was possible.

The lodge, guides and all the staff made the whole trip a very memorable one.

The only constructive criticism and tips for other travellers would be. The pre trip information for first time travellers could be a little clearer in what to take and not to take. The licencing that you have to complete online before travelling I found a bit confusing so a bit more detail in that would be helpful.

Apart from that I have a great time and I am already looking to rebook for next year.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi John thanks for the feedback and also the time on the phone, I appreciate as always people giving us their views and tips on how we can improve any of the holiday experience. As you know its something I am passionate about is making sure that the total service / package received from Sportquest Holidays is 100% as this is what everyone says is the difference between us and our competition.

I will sit down with Mike and give the pre trip info a overhaul and take the points you made onboard.

I will also get you paperwork sorted for the return trip next year, as I am sure with prior experience this time you will be doubly prepared this time.

As usual from Kalum River lodge the service, food, guides and banter was excellent.

Fishing was a bit more challenging than last year mainly due to heavy rain fall in the mountains upstream, having said that I still caught 28 fish and lost as many.

Should anyone stay an extra night (on the way out/back) at the Raddison in Vancouver there is a free shuttle provided by the hotel for guests staying there so no need to pay for a taxi, when you leave the airport head across the road to the multi story car park and to the right you will see a bus stop and a courtesy phone to use to call the hotel.

Also if you are staying the extra day in Vancouver the Canning factory museum at Steveston, Richmond Vancouver is well worth a visit.

Only issue we had the flight back was delayed for nearly 3hrs and we circled over oxford for 20mins and passport control took over an hour to clear. Other than that which I might add is out of the control of SportQuest it was well organised and a thoroughly enjoyable trip. We will defiantly be returning.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Paul

Thank you for the feedback it is very much appreciated, plus the travel tips is what future customers will find very beneficial.

Glad you both still had a good time even though mother nature tried to make the stakes a bit harder this year.

The variety and quality of the fishing was outstanding, although I know it was a relatively quiet week compared to some on the Skeena system. It would still take me 20 years to catch that many in Scotland!

A good reason for going back next year, which I have already booked!

The professionalism of Andrew and Deanna in running and organising the lodge and the fishing was exemplary and the guiding excellent. Also if you are looking to book a fishing holiday do not look any further than Sportquest Holidays.

Memorable moments: catching my first Sockeye Salmon. Watching a Bald eagle catch his breakfast then having to drag it to shore then 3 other Bald eagles chased him off. Also a Chum Salmon jumping at me and nearly hitting me twice! I hooked a Steelhead he went up and down the river then as I got him head up and ready to net, he looked at me and spat the hook out!

I saw a bear come crashing out of the woods and into the river to catch his dinner which he did! I did't have my camera with me (as cameras are a kiss of death).

I did not do any drift boat fishing I was about the only one. On Thursday the 4th August we were taken to the Kalum River and put among Joe Public who were Combat fishing. All my times I have been guided down on the Fraser River this has never happened. What done to it for us was 2 girls about 14 years old came along and in 30 mins had about 4 fish - we still stayed put - Glen was moaning on Thursday and Saturday that he could not get to a good spot on the Skeena River on Saturday as some guys must have got there about 6AM and stayed all day and killed every fish they caught.

These moments did not in anyway distract from the brilliant time that I had. This was just a dropped stitch in life's tapestry.

The Kalum River Lodge put huge effort into making their guests welcome; catering for individual needs be that dietary concerning food or direction and tuition with fishing for those "like me" that needed it.

The conditions for fishing were challenging, but Andrew and Deanna delivered an outstanding package.

The Sturgeon fishing was "awesome" to quote a favourite Canadian word.

The Coast hotel was comfortable and we did dine there through our choice and it was expensive but ok.

The only gap in the holiday was perhaps for Sportquest in the documentation to make clear that Cascade were responsible for arranging transfer to/from Vancouver.

We did not have a pick up time and the hotel did not know about our transfer.

In the end Melanie gave me the contact and we spoke to Marc (Cascade) once we knew they were the organiser.

All in all the holiday was an amazing trip and one I would love to do again soon.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

John

Thank you so much for your feedback and also taking the time to chat on the telephone. It was great listening to your stories about all the big fish as it sounds like you both had an amazing holiday. I can also see from the pictures you kindly sent through that the fishing was very enjoyable.

I am sorry that there was some confusion about who and when the transfers were talking place on the return, I am not sure what happened and why there was the concern as we have always used cascade to run the transfers. I will have to look in to this further.
I know you both would like to return next year, but understand that it classes with the family holiday thats already booked. Never mind we can always look at the following year as the lodges and fishing will still be there.

Once again, thank you for your custom as it is alway very much appreciated.

We had a great time fishing both Kalum River Lodge and Sturgeon fishing in Chilliwack, the staff and the fishing made for a great two centre holiday.

The only issue was flights as we had to pay $350 excess baggage on the flight to + back from Terrace, as they said that it was over their allowance. We were within British Airways limits, but not Westjet + the information we had did not highlight this.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Robin

Thank you for your feedback I am so glad that you both had a great time and the fishing was as you wished for.

I am so sorry for the flights as I have no idea what they are doing. First the issue of one of you being down graded in class of seat to then charge you for excess baggage on the return.

The rules of the baggage is as the flights are booked as a through fare (E.G one ticket) the babe allowance should be as per the international allowance, so we have no idea what or why they charged you.

Please accept our apologies over this, but we do have no control over the airlines as they do seem to be law unto themselves.

Thank you for the excellent scores on everything apart from the flights as these score mean a lot to both me and all the staff.

Also thank you for your custom, it will be a pleasure in managing your next fishing adventure.

Had an amazing holiday with my farther salmon fishing at Kalum River Lodge and then Sturgeon Fishing on the Frazer River on the return. The fishing, organisation and staff was all perfect.

The only issue was British Airways.

Booked Business Class flights + had to go out Premium Economy Class. Down to British Airways not Sportquest Holidays, otherwise all very good.

Would not fly with British Airways again - can you book Air Canada Business Class from Manchester?

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Daniel

Thanks for the customer feedback and also the amazing scores for both Sportquest and the lodge staff, it is very much appreciated. The score for the flights is totally understandable considering all the issues caused by British Airways.

When they over sell the plane then have to down grade customer who have purchased a higher class ticket is nothing short of disgusting. (We are trying to encourage ALL customers to check in online before arriving at the airport as this goes a very long way to prevent them getting down graded.

We are processing the claim against BA and we will keep you informed. In relation to alternative flights yes we can book Air Canada plus others, so once you and your father are ready, just let me know and I can sort out everything for you both again.

Had 4 out of 6 days good fishing. 2 out of 6 days impacted of high and dirty water, which caught the guides by surprise. So of the guides looked a bit lost due to the dirty water, while others went to other rivers and had a better results.

Still managed to catch plenty of fish and really enjoyed everyones company.

Would be better to have a shorter connection in Vancouver.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Peter

Thanks for the feedback and also your comments on the telephone, as it is always good to catch up with customers on thiner return.

Shame about the last 2 days fishing with dirty water. Its been a struggle this year due to low water so once some rain came it was bound to flash flood through. I will talk to Andrew about the guides and what happened, so thanks for talking to me about that.

In relation to the connection time, there is not much we can do about it. As we can not get you to the lode earlier as the other customers need time to leave and then everything to be fully cleaned before the new customers arrive. Its just down to the time needed and also the limit of flight options available from the airlines.

Thanks again for your feedback and I look forward arranging your next year travel plans again.

Another fun week on The Skeena River. Many thanks to Deanna and Andrew for hosting so well and to the experienced and helpful guiding team.

The restrictions imposed by the fisheries office, due to the lower than normal salmon runs, actually meant that there were no issues finding top spots on the river and there were still plenty of fish to be caught. I managed to land 35 pinks, 6 sockeye, 3 coho and one stunningly beautiful high teens steelhead. As usual many more than this were lost - I must replace those teflon hooks.

The new lodge is brilliant. Having well appointed, single, en suite rooms is a real game changer. The communal areas work really well and the food was delicious.

The trip was pretty awesome: the location, the lodge , the experience of Andrew and the other guides Glen, Cody & Pierrot was excellent.

I caught a few pinks , vast majority of my fish were chum, also a coho and sockeye, missed out on a king but saw one landed alongside of me. Many fish still sea liced. The coho and sockeye bars of silver.

The majority of the catch the Chum Salmon were amazing so so powerful, many of them jumping multiple times and screaming off downstream and you had to follow.. The biggest fish "conservatively estimated" by the guide at 25lbs with a few in that range over the week, 49 salmon landed and without doubt more than that in contact but lost through inexperience. Learning to Spey cast and the technique for landing the fish was priority the first couple of days. As the week went on with the expert guidance on hand the lessons learned made landing more fish possible, the best day being the last with 16 fish. Early starts up at 4.30am because of the weather 31 degrees and sunny not a problem to the guides they wanted to get you out there with the best opportunity to catch.

The hospitality at the lodge is second to none a home from home with the most wonderful home cooking and baking by Deanna and Cory. So good the belt had to go out a notch upon returning home.

Fantastic trip and yes I am going back !

The new lodge is even better than the previous one. The single large room for socialising and eating is an improvement and the views over the Skeena are spectacular.

The first week of August when I was there was the hottest week in northern BC for over a hundred years. This meant the rivers were cloudy with glacial sediment and the fishing for other than pink salmon went off a bit after 11.00 a.m.. Andrew did what he could to compensate - moving breakfast forward to 5.00 a.m. and concentrating on the shady spots.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Tim Thanks for the customer feedback and the chance to talk on the phone after returning from your trip.

Everyone is very happy with the new lodge which is good news, yes a shame this year the fishing was a little tougher than normal but as you said its the hottest weather for over 100 years, so that was always going to make the fishing more hard work.

Not quite as good as previous trips mainly due to the exceptional hot weather and also comical netting in the estuary of the Skeena River.

Would only consider going back if we knew netting dates.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Geoff, it was great catching up with you on the phone, thanks again for all the customer feedback.

Such a shame that this year the Salmon run was very low, combine this with the hot weather and the netting for 4 days was not the best of events.

I wish we all new when netting was going to happen. It is a real pain, but the fisheries monitor the fish run and numbers in the river. Once they hit the required number they allow netting for a few days then stop to do more recounting.

Normally the netting is only for a day or two and not for 4 days in a row.

Deanna & Andrew were brilliant as before, the new lodge is perfect base camp. Unfortunately for us the Salmon fishing the first week on the Skeena River was disappointing due to the freak weather

The saving grace for us was the follow on week Sturgeon fishing the 3 days on the Frazer River we had 7 huge Sturgeon.

As mentioned I hope the poor run of fish down to the recent weather conditions. I still have a chinook to catch to give me the full set of Salmon Species.

It was good catching up after your trip, like many this year the intense heat in Canada this year with all the forest fires has made this a very hard one.

In relation to the flights, sorry that no luggage was booked in with the internal flight. As you booked your international flights and we only booked the internal, we did not realise that bags were not included when they book that flight for you. So please accept our apologies for that.

I look forward in helping you again soon and also have you back on one of our hosted fly fishing trips.

The group was an electric mixture but under Mike's leadership we all got on and we all enjoyed each others company.

I enjoyed the new lodge and accommodation.

Although the fishing was tough I still managed to get myself 2 Steelhead during the week so I was very happy.

This was the first time i have used Sportquest Holidays and I must admit the difference to competitors that I have used before is miles apart so would recommend them every-time

Got off to a bad start with flight from London to Montreal being delayed by over an hour which meant we arrived 1 day late. minus our bags....

The fishing for Salmon was poor due to a decrease in the numbers of fish running in the river. The last day of our holiday saved the whole trip when we moved on to go Sturgeon fishing with a nice fish up to 330LBs

James

So sorry about the flight delays and then the airline losing your luggage, I am glad it did all eventually turn up.

Yes the Salmon fishing for Pacific's in Canada this year has been tough. This is very very unusal so I am sure it will be back to normal again next year.

Congratulations on the Sturgeon a stunning fish.

Just also a thank you to say thanks for completing the customer feedback as they are very important, also to say a huge thank you for your continued support.

Another nice time at Kalum River Lodge. Weather made fishing tougher than normal as we had 30 heat most days.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Geoff was good talking to you and thanks as always for both your feedback and custom. Shame that the weather made the week a tough one, as they say the week before our customers had an amazing week apart from the last day which is when this unseasonal weather came in.
Again thanks for your support talk soon

I travel with Sportquest Holidays because their travel organisation is faultless this is my 3rd trip. The accommodation and fishing at Kalum River Lodge was excellent although a fewer salmon than previously however it still is an exciting and memorable trip. I have already rebooked again for next year.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Andrzej. Thank you again for both your custom, support and feedback. It is nice to receive such appreciation as the staff in the offices do work hard to try and provide customers with the whole holiday experience. We are so pleased that you are returning again with us next year and I am sure there will be lots of obliging salmon especially those huge Chum Salmon just waiting to attack your flies.
Talk soon regards Peter

Inadequate no. of guides at times - 1 guide to 4 anglers. Inexperienced guide did not fish good looking spots and took us way down the river before stopping on 2 days. Drop off and pick up of drift boats needs to be improved, lost approx 1 hour of fishing per day. Fishing day very short finished approx 16:00hrs. More detail required on rod sizes, lines, tips and flies prior to departure.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

John Thank you for your customer feedback all of which has now been passed on to the lodge. Yes two of the guides are new this season and yes it does take a couple of years to get to know all the best spots. They are also going to look to improve the drop off and pick up of the boats when drift fishing. In relation to finishing at 4 pm that is because we have you out on the water early in the mornings so you still get well over 8 to 9 hours fishing. Thank you so much for choosing to travel with Sportquest Holidays and also for your important feedback.

The trip met and exceeded my expectations. Just a minor point if I may. I Think it would be better if the guides had nets with built in scales so we could accuratly record the fish weights.
Apart from that I would go back tomorrow.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Paul, so glad you had such a good time and we would also be happy to have you back tomorrow as everyone enjoyed your company. Thank you so much for your customer as it is always appreciated.

Overall the trip was superb. Andrew Deanne hospitality was second to none. A couple of guides were superb, could not do enough for you - Luke and Geoff. You could tell Glen is getting ready to finish, attention to details not as good. Maybe Andrew needs to slow down a bit when guiding, everything is 'flat out.' Main criticism was waiting morning and night while guides shuttled vehicles to bottom of river. 1 hr every day wasted, 6 hrs in total - nearly a days lost fishing time. When you pay top dollar for a trip, you want to be fishing max time.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Bryn

Thanks for your feedback as it is very much appreciated. I have passed yours and everyones else comments about the waiting around, this was new for this season I I agree it is not as good as before.

We will look at trying to get that addressed.

Peter

I had my fishing trip to BC delayed by covid, I was booked on the hosted Kalum river lodge trip.
As the delayed trip now coincided with my 70th birthday, I decided to take my son along too and add a couple of days Sturgeon fishing.
There was a little hiccup when we arrived at Vancouver and we had to wait a couple of hours to Fraser River lodge. On arrival we were shown to our room overlooking the river and the Bison.
The next morning after breakfast we met John our guide and we climbed aboard our truck for the short drive to the Launch point.
The fishing and scenery were incredible the first day we had a 7ft a 7.5 ft and 8.5ft Sturgeon, the latter taking us 2hrs to land 5 miles down the river.
The next day was quieter with only 5 Sturgeon to 7.5 ft landed and a few lost.
The lodge is great though at that time of year there are lots of mosquitoes and liberal application of bug spray is needed.
They were catching up on Weddings whilst we were there so we didn’t have any of our evening meals at the lodge. We were too tired to go into the nearby town so we relied on delivery, but the breakfasts were huge and lunch was a BBQ on the boat.
On the Sunday we transferred back to Vancouver and then onto Terrace where we were met by Lars and his team, I hadn’t realised that Andrew had sold the lodge , but Lars and his team were very efficient and personable.
As it was a hosted group we all met for supper on the first night. I would say that we all got on really well.
Breakfast was at 0500 getting into the trucks by 0530. The first day Tom and I went to the Kitimat to raft down the river fishing for Chum.To catch these you have to bounce your fly off the bottom. The first morning I lost 6 and landed 2 with a further one landed after lunch. This was the first time my son had fished with a double handed rod, but our guide Justin was a qualified casting instructor and soon had Tom putting out a decent line.Tom managed to land 3 Chum that day, but lost some others where he broke my switch rod trying to persuade a 20lb+ Chum to go into the landing net!
We alternated fishing the Kitimat and the Skeena . I continued with my usual problem of struggling to land Sockeye, I had 20+ hookups but couldn’t seem to hang onto them.Another guest fishing with us landed 14 Sockeye and lost lots of others that second day.
It was all made up when I hooked and landed a 20lb Steelhead it was the only fish I landed that day.
We continued to land Chum, pinks Steelhead and Sockeye for the rest of the week.I even managed to land 2 Sockeye and a 6-7lb pink on my last day when I had switched on to-the necessary fishing technique.
The group we were with gelled extremely well and the host Mike was extremely helpful and we were jealous that he was staying on for a second week.
The accommodation is in single rooms, Greg the chef continued to produce amazing food throughout the week, though the Canadian fixation with strange salad combinations is weird to British tastes, Brussel Sprout Salad anyone?
The guides were exceptional but I must give particular mention to Justin who tutored my son and continuously put us on those extraordinary beasts the Chum Salmon. He went to extraordinary lengths to net some of them.
A fabulous holiday, it is great fly fishing in a river where there are so many fish.

The highlight of my holiday was having everything arranged for me so I didn’t have to think! The fishing was superb,. The guides were extremely helpful
and knowledgeable about where to go and all remarked on the unprecedented numbers of fish in the river. The scenery is amazing. There are very few mosquitoes which is a real bonus. The food was excellent, my bed was very comfortable, and the water piping hot. Altogether an amazing fishing holiday.
