If you’re looking for a family fishing holiday catering to the needs of both anglers and non-anglers alike, then our holiday to the mighty river Ebro in Spain will tick all the right boxes. Our riverbank villa ‘Bianca’ is ideal for large families or a group of friends and is located in Riba Roja d’Ebre, just 100m away from this famous Spanish waterway, in a prime spot for a whole host of hard-fighting species. The Wels Catfish are the primary, most popular target amongst travelling rods, but at this unique location, it’s possible to catch an array of other species, including specimen-sized Carp, Perch, Zander and even black Bass.
Whether you prefer to fish from the bank or boat, with bait or lures, have the services of a guide or explore and fish off your own back, it’s all possible. If you want a hardcore week of fishing, fishing 24 hours a day or just a few days mixed in, between time spent exploring the local area and enjoying the pool with your family, then it’s entirely down to your personal preference. Everything about this unique trip can be tailored to suit your needs, which is why it’s so popular for anglers and non-angling companions.
In short, if you’re looking for a fantastic family fishing adventure in the sun, just a short flight from the UK, with the chance to catch numerous freshwater species, this tour is perfect for you.
Villa “Bianca” is a Riverfront Villa located only 100 meters from a wild 18km stretch of the River Ebro, where 24-hour fishing is allowed. On this stretch, the Wels Catfish reign supreme and fish over 100lb and even 200lb are not unusual, along with good numbers of hard-fighting carp which push 50lb. It’s also possible to target Zander, which grow to specimen proportions and have been landed to 22lb+, along with good numbers of Perch and Black Bass. One of the popular aspects of fishing on this mighty river, especially at Riba Roja d’Ebre, is the sheer number of methods and ways you can fish.
The Catfish are the most popular quarry amongst anglers and can be targeted from either the bank or boat. Boat fishing tends to be the most popular as it allows you to cover lots of water in a short space of time. Trolling lures and drift-style float fishing using clonks and live bait are two of the most popular methods, especially when fished along the marginal shelves and the area’s near shallow weed beds. However, if you prefer a more relaxed style of fishing from terra firma, you can enjoy the private swim at the end of the garden or relocate to your own private stretch along the river. When fishing from the bank for both the Catfish and Carp, fishing over big beds of pellets and boilies is very successful and will usually generate plenty of bites during a typical week. If it’s just the Cats you’re targeting, then the buoy method with live bait is the most popular and more selective.
Note: For the Carp, don’t forget old-fashioned baits like corn, halibut pellets and maize and don’t complicate your rigs; the majority of the fish have never been caught before.
For the smaller predators that inhabit this great waterway, artificial lures are very effective, especially soft baits and wobblers; however, small live baits and fresh deads also account for significant numbers of fish. The colder months between November and February are usually the most productive for the Zander and Perch, and, like with the Catfish and Carp, they can be caught from either the bank or boat.
At villa ‘Bianca’, it’s possible to fish from the bank or boat, partly guided, fully guided or self-guided; however, we recommend hiring a professional guide for at least a day of your trip. The local guides have a wealth of knowledge, which is priceless and will undoubtedly make your trip an even more memorable experience.
If you want to bank fish, it’s possible to do so in the private swim at the very end of the villa’s garden, or you can explore any of the 18km stretch of river on which the accommodation sits. If you’d prefer more flexibility and the chance to explore more of the river, a selection of boats are available for hire, either guided or self-drive. All the vessels are well made, stable (with a flat floor) and customised especially for fishing on the river Ebro. They are fully insured and equipped for 2-3 people. The boats available include:
– Aluminium boat V 4.80 m with console – steering wheel (flat floor) 50hp Tohatsu
– Aluminium boats V 4.30m (flat floor) 30hp Mercury/Honda
– Aluminium boat 4.30 m (flat floor) 15hp Yamaha
– Leisure boat also suitable for fishing – 50hp Yamaha
As well as boats, the tackle is also available for hire if you want to avoid taking your own. There’s a range of super strong Catfish tackle for every method you could ever use, complete carp fishing set-ups including everything you’d need to do a night on the bank, plus an array of spinning tackle for predator fishing.
Note: As well as tackle, it’s also possible to buy sacks of Halibut Pellets and Maize.
When fishing on the river Ebro in Spain, you will need a fishing licence, and these can be purchased from the local village shop, ordered online, or we can organise them before you arrive. They are valid for periods ranging from one day to four years, depending on how much you want to pay, and each region requires a licence.
Our destination on the River Ebro is perfect for families and non-angling companions, and there’s a host of extra activities on offer. If you don’t want to leave the comfort of the villa and want to enjoy a relaxing week in the sun, then the accommodation has a pool and BBQ. If you’re looking to explore the local area, we strongly recommend hiring a car, which we can provide, as there is a whole host of beautiful beaches within a 45-minute drive. The area known as Costa Dorada consists of around 60 beaches of all types: the fine sand and shallow waters of Salou and La Pineda, the cliffs and rocks of Torredembarra, to the small bays of Mont-Roig del Camp and Miami Platja.
From Riba-Roja d’Ebre, where our destination is based, it’s also possible to take a day trip to Barcelona. There are six trains per day, including four direct, travelling to the country’s largest city, which is around 3.5 hours away on average.
If you’re looking for some activities to book during your stay, there are a whole host of options, including wine tasting, canoeing, bird watching, clay pigeon shooting, cycling and hiking, to mention just a few. If you’re prepared to travel slightly further afield, Port Aventura is only an hour’s drive. Here you’ll find one of Europe’s most iconic theme parks, with a host of white knuckle rides and exciting roller coasters. There’s also PortAventura Aquatic park, with more spectacular rides and slides.
Our Ebro Villa holiday is based on three guests staying in the ‘Siluro’ apartment, a comfortable accommodation situated less than 100m away from the river, offering guests 24-hour access.
Renovated in 2019, it can accommodate three guests but with the option to add a bed to cater for four. It features a fully equipped kitchen annexe, an A/C unit, TV, toilet, shower, WiFi and BBQ area. The building and surrounding land are fenced for privacy and encompassed with olive trees, providing ultimate peace and tranquillity.
The larger accommodation on-site, Villa Bianca, is available as an upgrade and, like ‘Siluro’, is situated less than 100m away from the river and was also upgraded in 2019. Fully equipped to cater for one to eight guests, it is 200m2 in total. It features a lovely spacious entrance, mosquito net with rustic oak beams, a wood burning stove, a beautiful open plan kitchen and dining area, a cosy living room with fireplace, TV and WiFi, a massive patio to the barbecue and swimming pool area. (which is for the sole use of guests.) Outside there are plenty of tables, chairs and sun loungers, and it is the perfect place to read a book, enjoy a glass of wine and soak up the stunning picturesque mountain backdrops.
There are also three additional apartments available for larger groups, and it’s possible to book these together with the villa as they are located very close by, meaning family and friends can all enjoy time together.
Named ‘Bambi’, they are small but comfortable and can accommodate two guests. These feature an A/C unit, fan, fridge, kettle, TV, toilet, shower, WiFi and BBQ area.
All the different styles of accommodation are a stone’s throw away from the river (less than 100m), so whichever you opt for, you can be fishing 24 hours a day if you so wish.
