Ebro Crazy Catfish Fishing | Spain

Tour code: SPA003

Ever dreamt of doing battle with one of the hardest fighting freshwater beast on the planet? Well, now is your chance, as we are offering Cat-fishing at its best. Imagine standing on the side of a huge fast running river holding on to a very angry Catfish, as it tries to get back to its hole. As you can imagine, it is an experience not to miss!

The Catfish in the River Ebro grow to enormous sizes and the area we fish hold beasts over the magic 200lb mark along with many 100lb Catfish. With multiple catches daily, this truly is the home to some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world. Our guides will take great care of you whilst fishing this impressive river, making your day as enjoyable as possible. They are willing for you to do everything or as little as you wish and will make your experience as full-on as they can.

They have been fishing this area for many years now and they know some pretty good areas where the Catfish like to call ‘Home’ and then it’s down to you. Do you think you can handle such a fish? Well, there is only one way of finding out.

When targeting the huge Wels catfish that inhabit the world-famous River Ebro you will be fishing in some of Spains most renowned river system. The Ebro is well known for its monster fish that live in it with not only big Catfish but big Carp also swim these waters. The pretty little town of Caspe is where you will be based and is located in the province of Zaragoza in the west of the country. This area is rich with culture and is famous for the vineyards that surround it along with beautiful countryside.

The fishing on the River Ebro is phenomenal, for the freshwater angler this really is one destination that just has to be fished. The areas of this river that we fish give the anglers the chance to catch some absolute monster fish, some reaching over 200lb. These fish are targeted from the bank and having your guide explaining where to place the baits and how much bait to put in. Your guide will help you every step of the way which in turn will mean that your fishing experience on the Ebro will be the best it can be.

The Catfish and Carp that you will be fishing for are predominantly bottom-feeding fish so you will be ledgering baits on the bottom using tackle that is specifically designed for this type of fishing. The tackle which is provided for you to use is the high-quality tackle that will tame these monster that you will find here. With Catfish to over 200lb in this river and Carp to over 40lb the chance of a monster here is highly achievable and when the bite alarms scream off you never know what could be on the end of the line. If you want to just target Carp then the guides have lighter setups and all you have to do is fish the margins.

You will be helped every step of the way whilst fishing for catfish on the Ebro by the guides at the destination who know these waters like the backs of their hands. This ensures that you have the highest chance of catching that fish that you have travelled here to target meaning, these guides will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, ensuring your holiday goes as smooth as possible.

Questions & Answers

Where is the Lodge?

The Catfish fishing is based at the village of Caspé in the Zaragoza region of Spain, this accommodation is a short journey from the fishing grounds but also has all the amenities of the village close by if you need to grab some provisions.

Where do they fish?

You will be fishing in the amazing River Ebro, this river is famed for its huge fish potential with Catfish to over 200lb and Carp to over 40lb. You will be fishing from the banks of this large river and your baits will be placed in the best positions to try and catch these fish.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

The fishing grounds are a short drive from the apartments, your guides will drive you down to your spot for the day with nearly all being under half an hour away.

What fish will I catch?

Whilst fishing on the River Ebro you will predominantly be targeting the huge Catfish and Carp that live in these waters. There are also chances to catch other species too like Barbel, Ide, huge Roach and Zander.

How many fish will I catch?

When on the Ebro you are fishing for a specimen fish so there may be quiet times but these waters have the capability to produce some absolute monsters so that one run could be the fish of a lifetime. When fishing for the smaller species the fishing may be busier as a lot of these fish are shoal fish.

How do they fish?

The fishing on the River Ebro for the catfish is done by ledgering baits on the bottom, both the Carp and Catfish are bottom feeders so this is the way to target these fish. Big baits will be used and these are normally halibut pellets as these are durable and the large size means they cannot be taken by smaller fish. Sometimes your baits will be cast out to the baited areas and other times they will be taken out by boat and dropped depending on the distance you will be fishing at.

Do the guides speak English?

The fishing guides all speak perfect English and will always help you with any questions that may arise.

Who is best suited to this destination?

The river Ebro is a great destination for all, as the accommodation, restaurant/bar and of course the fishing has been set up to ensure everyone has the best experience of Spain. Some of the fishing spots are a little difficult to get to so being sturdy on your feet is sometimes helpful.

What skill level is required?

As mentioned previously, this destination suits all abilities as you have nice weather, protected rivers and a guide who will help you with everything you need.

How physically demanding is this trip?

The destination is suitable for all abilities, the fish can put up a big fight as you would expect from something that can grow to over 200lb but your guide will be there to help you if you need help.

When to go?

This destination is fishable nearly all year with the prime months for the big Catfish being the warmer spring and summer months of May through to September. The Carp tend to be more active in the winter months as the Catfish are not on the bait first so the chances of catching Carp is greater.

How to get there?

You will fly from a UK airport (roughly 2 hours) to Zaragoza where you will be picked up by a representative from Ebro Crazy Cats. The transfer to the accommodation by car is then around 1.5 hours.

What is the accommodation like?

The hotel is perfectly set up for the angler as well as an ideal place to rest and refresh after a hard days fishing on the Ebro. With the rooms being located in the town of Caspe, you will not have to walk far for your meals and to share your fishing stories.

What is the food like?

In the town of Caspe, there are many different restaurants to choose from. These range from burger restaurants to some fine dining so the choice is yours. The hotel you will be staying in also offers food and the menu is fairly large.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

All tackle is provided at the Ebro fishing and this tackle is of very high quality.

Is internet and phone signal available?

The phone signal around Spain is fairly good, but some of the remote fishing spots it is hard to get a signal. The hotel offers free WIFI for all guests.

Are there other activities available?

The village of Caspé is in a beautiful area of Spain meaning that visiting customers can go for a walk or cycle ride. Another option is to visit one of the stunning vineyards close by.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view all available weeks and prices click the ‘Dates & Prices’ tab above.

The fishing was very hard due to high temps but luckily by the end of the week the weather started to cool down and the fishing just got better and better. I will send you a couple of pictures when I have time

Speak to you soon

Hi Sportquest holidays after a little disaster with our flights turning up in Spain late and missing our transfer we soon had things sorted and found ourselves at the hotel you had booked for us. It was more than we were expecting and the staff were very helpful even though it was nearly midnight when we turned up. Paul called us first thing in the morning to make sure we had arrived and arranged what time we wanted to go fishing. The weather was a little cooler than normal which Paul said was making the Cats feed more so every one was very excited about going fishing.

To cut a long story short we all had massive Catfish and a few good Carp so in general the holiday was a great success. Thanks Mel for organising a new transfer for us and tell Peter we will send him some pictures

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Barry what a shame your holiday started in that way but unfortunately we can not control flights but at least things were sorted and you managed to arrive the same day (just)

We did hear that the Catfish were feeding well and thought you guys would have a good trip. Thank you for taking the time to fill out your feedback form and will tell Peter to look out for your pictures.

Hopefully we will catch up soon

Hi Paul thanks for all your help with this trip. We have been to Spain before and tried to do it ourselves and this time it felt alot more organised. The host, Paul Booth, helped us rig up every day and put us on fish time after time. My Cat was the biggest of the week at 179LB and Tony said he would try and send some pictures to you as soon as he can.

The accommodation made a lovely change to what else is on offer in Spain and was surprised with Caspe, lots to do in the evenings.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Dean it was my pleasure to help you guys again and thanks for your feedback form. I shall pass on your comments to the host. Pictures would be great and if ok with you guys I will write a nice blog. Glad you liked the hotel and yes it makes a nice change

Thank you sportquest holidays was a great trip

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thanks Peter hopefully you managed your 100LB + Catfish you so wanted and really looking forward to catching up with you when you get some spare time

Wow it was hot high 30's every day. the fishing was a little slow we had cats from 50LB to 110LB. Paul was a great guide and kept us entertained on the slow days

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Gary, wow it sounded hot. Like us the cats do not feel like doing much when its that hot. Still by the sounds of it you caught a few fish and can not wait to see the pictures of Wayne swimming in that stream you were talking about..... We will try and get you out of the hotter months next year.

Speak soon

When my husband asked me to organise a fishing holiday to Spain I really did not know what to expect. We have been on the odd days fishing when on holiday before but never a full organised fishing holiday. It all went very well and Paul was a great host making sure not only my husband was being looked after but also myself as I did not tend to fish very much. I tried reeling in one of Johns catfish but had to give up after 10 minutes as I thought it may well pull me in.

A massive thank you to Mel at Sportquest for suggesting Catfishing in Spain.

All our very best, Diane and John

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Diane, it was a real pleasure to talk through this holiday with you and glad you both enjoyed it and managed to have a go yourself. Yes Paul the host is very good he always gets a glowing report. I shall email him your very kind words and hopefully you will choose to use Sportquest in the future

All my best, Mel

Thank you Sportquest and Paul Booth over in Spain for making this a dream come true for my father. He has always wanted to catch a freshwater fish over 100lb and he was not let down. The biggest for him for the week was 187LB which I believe you have now got pictures of.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Steve and Tony, glad Tony loved it and managed his dream fish. It really is the best place in the world for a giant Catfish. Paul Booth is an excellent host and takes care of all anglers. Peter says thanks for the pictures they will appear on our website very soon and congratulations on such an amazing Catfish.

Are you guys still interested in a Thailand trip? I will try and get hold of you next week all the best Paul
