Record Breaking Sailfish Fishing | Guatemala

Overview

Tour code: GUT001

Guatemala has built a reputation around the globe for its insane billfishing, with a huge list of IGFA records as long as your arm it has become the go-to place for any serious specimen angler in search of dream fishing. When you team the amazing fishing with one of the best and longest-standing crew teams in Guatemala you will find yourself in complete billfish paradise. The Great Sailfish Company have been running successful fishing charters since back in 2002 and have made so many anglers dream a reality and with their huge amount of knowledge both for fly and conventional fishing, you will find it hard to book a better fishing charter boat and team anywhere in the world.

Location

You will be fishing the fish-filled waters off Guatemala where the Sailfish swim free and are abundant in numbers. These South American waters of the Atlantic Ocean are full of nutrients and this in-turn attracts the many species of fish that you will find there, along with the amazing Sailfish and Marlin bite the sea off Guatemala are teaming with all the other species you would come to expect in such fish-rich waters. Head over to our YouTube channel to see for yourself what a Guatemala fishing holiday is truly like.

Off-Shore Guatemala fishing

We all know that nothing is ever guaranteed in fishing, but this is about as close as you can get to perfection. Ever dreamt of teasing lit up Sailfish to within 20ft of the stern, multiple hook-ups and constant action? Then dream no more, as this is a true saltwater anglers dream location. The reason for the outstanding action is the vast amount of baitfish all year round and put this together with warm eddies, makes the ideal habitat for huge pods of Sailfish that are present year-round.

With the large abundance of billfish available, pacific Sailfish, in particular, Guatemala fishing holidays have become a magnet to many fly fishermen both experienced and new to the sport. Even though the ration of raises to hook-ups is much greater with conventional tackle compared to fly tackle it still remains the perfect place to tick off this sort after action for any travelling fly angler due to the sheer amount of chances per day. The waters surrounding Guatemala in the main sport fishing season are normally very calm and with the strong currents being pushed up from Mexico makes the Sailfish feed very aggressively.

When the Sailfish is running you can expect to raise up to twenty billfish to the stern of the boat making it an ideal destination to learn the technique of casting a fly to a Sailfish and experiencing the thrill of a hundred pound plus fish dancing on the end of your rod. If you choose to fly fish then before the boat leaves the marina you will get a short instruction explaining the procedure in detail of how to time the cast and more importantly the signals and directions that you will be given from the captain in the flybridge. Fly fishing for any billfish is a team event and the instructions from the captain will need to be listened to as this will determine a successful day on the water.

In-Shore Guatemala fishing

If you fancy a break from the Sailfish, then the Dorado and Tuna action is also world-class and are the perfect species to target, if you wish to bring something home for the table. In addition to the Sailfish, the Marlin bite is red hot at certain times of the year and you can expect to raise two or three of these huge Marlin each day. The Inshore fishing is often overlooked in Guatemala due to how exceptionally excellent the Offshore bite is, but let us inform you that you simply must set aside at least one day to try and tempt some of the huge Roosters that get caught every day, the Cubera Snapper fishing is also off the scale and both these species can be caught either by trolling baits or why not throw big splashing poppers as the take from either of these species will feel like a steam train hitting your lure. Along with these two very popular species, you will catch Jacks and lots of other snappers that live in and around the reefs.

The fishing grounds start pretty much as you leave the breakwater and can be as far out as 50 miles, although it is more common to find the fish in what we term as “The pocket” a deep-water canyon that has huge drop-offs ranging from 1000ft – 5000ft. The Sailfish at this destination in Guatemala are renowned speedsters and will leave you grinning from ear to ear as they scream off at a rate of knots. You will be holding on for dear life as you do battle with these stunning fish in the clear blue waters in the Sailfish capital of the world.

Guides

Your guides on this holiday are all experienced skippers and deckhands and have all been fishing these waters for a long time, meaning that you get the best possible fishing experience available. Whether you choose to fly fish or the more traditional trolling then the captain and deckhands will be more than happy to help in any way you need. If you are choosing to target the billfish on fly tackle then you will be given full instructions before you leave the marina, it is very important that you all work as a team when fly fishing as instructions will be given from the captain on when to cast and more importantly when to set the hook and great communication is key to success.

You will be served a full American breakfast before your transfer to the marina. The typical fishing day is 7 am until 4 or 4:30 pm. It is important at this time that everyone works together and listens to instructions given by the captain and deckhands.

Questions & Answers

WHERE IS THE DESTINATION?

Guatemala is located in Central America. Guatemala is bordered by the Gulf of Honduras (Caribbean Sea) and the Pacific Ocean, Mexico to the north and west, and Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador to the east.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH THE FISHING GROUNDS?

The fishing grounds start pretty much as you leave the breakwater and can be as far out as 50 miles, although it is more common to find the fish in what we term as “The pocket” a deep-water canyon that has huge drop-offs ranging from 1000ft – 5000ft. The blue water can start from 2 miles out up to 50 miles and the length of time needed to get top the fishing grounds will change each day.

WHAT FISH WILL I CATCH?

The main target in Guatemala will, of course, be the billfish. You will see Sailfish, Blue Marlin and Black Marlin and these will be the main target of your holiday. You have also got the inshore fishing where you can target Roosters and Cubera Snapper along with many other different types of snapper.

HOW MANY FISH WILL I CATCH?

Depending on the time of year you can travel, we would of course always recommend travelling in peak times for your chosen species. If you were to travel in the peak times for the billfish run then you should expect to raise at least 20 billfish each day it is then down to you on how many you can get to stick on the hook. There are always other pelagic species to target if you fancy a change

HOW WILL I FISH?

There are two main methods practised when targeting the billfish in Guatemala. The first and most commonly used practice will be fishing with conventional tackle, trolling artificial lures and baits. Then a very quickly growing method is to fly fish, and this is due to the sheer amount of opportunities you will have each day and once you have hooked a fish in excess of a hundred pounds on your fly rod you will never go back to standard rod and reels.

DO THE GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH?

The natural language in Guatemala is Spanish but the captains and deckhands all speak very good English. The captains speak better English so if you are struggling to get something over to the deckhands then simply speak with your captain and he will pass on the message

WHO IS BEST SUITED TO THIS DESTINATION?

This destination is suited to the more active angler as the more effort you put in the more action you will get. As there are so many Billfish at this destination it really is more suited to people looking for numbers of fish.

WHAT SKILL LEVEL IS REQUIRED?

As there are a couple of different methods for these billfish, there is no skill level required as the captains and deckhands are more than used to people with little to no experience and will adjust the fishing methods to suit your knowledge. Some knowledge of being on a boat is advisable but not necessary. All trolling and bait fishing equipment is included free of charge, if you wish to use their fly fishing equipment then you will be charged for this per day.

HOW PHYSICALLY DEMANDING IS THIS TRIP?

If you choose to troll with conventional tackle then it is fairly easy, but be prepared for short battles with the billfish. These can last anything from 10 minutes to over an hour so being healthy is advisable. When you want to target the billfish on the fly we recommend and advise that this can be fairly strenuous as most of the time you will have to stand up to fight your fish.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO?

The main season is from October to May with January to March being the peak time. This is when you will see on average twenty or so billfish raised per day. The inshore fishing is pretty stable year-round.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

At present there are no direct flights into Guatemala, this means from the UK you will have to transit through the states. Normally through Houston is the most direct and shortest route.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

The resort is mainly owned by locals on a timeshare, so you will soon find yourself in relative solitude in the week and you may also be the only people at dinner or the only one swimming in the pool during the week which really adds to the excellence of this resort. The pace sometimes picks up at the weekends though and this is when you will find most of the entertainment is scheduled for.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

With space for up to 1,000 people, our Los Caracoles restaurant offers a delightful selection of seafood, exotic drinks, a hearty breakfast buffet and cuisine from Guatemala and beyond. international cuisine

IS FISHING TACKLE INCLUDED?

When you decide to use conventional tackle, for example trolling, then yes this is all included and is of a very high standard. The boat does own lots of top quality fly fishing tackle but there will be a daily charge to hire this equipment. We can provide a list of what fly tackle is used and of course, you can take your own if you so wish.

IS INTERNET AND PHONE SIGNAL AVAILABLE?

There is a good phone signal all around Guatemala and the WIFI at the resort is free to use around the whole resort.

ARE THERE OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE?

There are many non-fishing related land-based activities which can be organized by the hotel staff. A full list of activities can be sent you, just a member of the Sportquest Team who will be more than happy to help and assist.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel arrangements we can book just the resort and fishing for you.

Thanks for talking to me and the feedback. As discussed on someday you have to travel further to find the current lines which change on a daily basis. As you experienced it is well worth the journey as your catches proved.

The staff and crew on our holiday were out of this world. The fishing was incredible have never seen action big game fishing like this in our lives.

We raised so many fishing on a daily basis, at times the boat was complete chaos with us running around while others in the group were playing fish. At one point we had a triple hook up. We would love to return just need to start saving up fast.

Hi Peter just a few lines to let you know how much we enjoyed our fishing trip to Guatemala from the minute we landed we were looked after by the rep who called himself jeremy so we would remember his name. To the time we were dropped back at the airport a week later.

The holiday surpassed our expectations the food the hotel & the weather. But the fishing was out of this world between the two of us we had 58 sailfish from about 80 pounds upto about 150 pounds & we had approx 25 to 30 Doradro up to about 28 pounds. we had a quick work out of the figures & that works out at 1 Sailfish every 30 minutes over the 5 days fishing not including the Dorado which were great fun & would have been good sport on light tackle. All the boats & there crew were fantastic & we left the marina bang on time every day so we got as much fishing as possible.

Thanks H Blacker

Ps we are saving our pennies for the next time.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Wow thanks for the feedback and all the pictures, yes you boys did get into all the fish. One sailfish every 30 mins is just amazing. Save hard and we will see you again next year. Regards Peter

Peter just got back from my trip and just wanted to let you know how sore my back is, it was not from the long off road drive but from playing too many fish. Must say a great trip just wish we could get a helicopter to fly us in.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Dr White, thanks for the feedback and the great pictures, i have added them all to our website. Also thank you for your continued business.

Kind Regards Peter

Neil

Only complaint was on the flight over Alcohol was for purchase only by plastic only no cash accepted. Fishing in the mornings was full on, but for some reason the afternoon bite was quite. We all had a great holiday thank you.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Neil, thats strange in relation to the drinks on the flights. You flew with united we will make sure we get this added to peoples pre departure to make sure anyone travelling is carrying a credit card. Long flight with no alcohol is not joke. Glad you all got plenty of action with the sailfish, in relation to the bite being quite in the afternoon these things can happen, it can also be the other way around. Glad that you all enjoyed the holiday and look forward to seeing your pictures. Regards Mel
