These Sportquest Holidays exclusive solo-traveller weeks have been carefully designed to give single anglers the chance to experience an action-packed shore-fishing adventure in South Africa. While our standard trips to the famous Jeffreys Bay are based on two anglers sharing flights, accommodation and fishing, these specially curated departures allow you to join a group of like-minded Sportquest customers as a solo guest, with no single supplements or surcharges to pay.
Along South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Jeffreys Bay delivers one of the most demanding and electrifying shore-based shark fisheries on the planet. This is a destination built for anglers who crave heavy tackle, screaming reels, and fish that push both body and mindset to the limit. Giant Bronze Whalers cruise within casting range, Ragged-Tooth Sharks lurk beyond the breakers, and Bull Sharks rule the deeper gutters. Add Smoothhound, Sand Sharks, Spotted Gullies, Duck-Billed and Blue Rays, and Kabeljou, and no two sessions are ever the same. Every bait placed is a genuine roll of the dice.
Fishing is planned around tides and conditions, with expert support throughout the day. All tackle is supplied, purpose-built for land-based battles with sharks well over 400lb. From bait preparation and long casts to managing long, punishing fights in the surf, the team is there to guide and assist.
After the fishing day is done, comfort is close by. Accommodation at Seashells offers sea views, relaxed living spaces, and easy access to the beach. Evenings are spent unwinding with good food, coastal air, and stories of battles fought just hours earlier.
As with all our Solo Traveller dates, our weeks have been hand-picked in collaboration with our trusted lodge partners to coincide with the season’s peak times, based on historic catch records and local conditions.

On fishing days three and four, and on each day of your holiday, you will head out with senior guide Gerhard Guse. Gerhard has successfully fished these South African waters (notably the Eastern Cape) since the mid-1980s, regularly catching trophy-sized fish. He is a highly decorated competitive angler and is well-regarded within the country’s sportfishing communities.
Gerhard will assist you while you fish, helping with everything from baiting and casting to offering advice, landing your catch and taking all those important catch pictures for your album.

On your last two fishing days, if there’s a species of fish you haven’t caught and would like to, let Gerhard know, and he will do his best to make it happen. While most of the fishing is ‘classic’ shore fishing – casting your freshly baited lines into the depths and allowing scent trails to drift through the water, enticing ocean predators to come and investigate. It’s also possible to have some fun in the surf with some lighter tackle. Small rubber shads and spinners can provide some exciting sport with species such as Kob, White Steenbras and Garrick, to mention just a few.

Shark fishing at Jeffreys Bay is an adrenaline-charged experience that draws anglers from around the world. This stretch of South Africa’s Eastern Cape is home to some of the ocean’s most powerful predators, including Bronze Whalers, Ragged-Tooth Sharks, and formidable Bull Sharks, all of which promise intense, memorable battles from the shore. But the appeal doesn’t stop at sharks. These rich coastal waters are teeming with variety. Duck-Billed and Blue Rays, Smoothhound and Sand Sharks, Spotted Gully Sharks, and prized species like Kabeljou add to the thrill, making every cast a moment of pure anticipation.
The sharks here can exceed 400 pounds, delivering brutal, line-tearing runs and testing every ounce of an angler’s strength and skill. Hooking into a giant Bronzie from the surf is as physically demanding as it is rewarding, an epic test of nerve, technique, and endurance.
Fishing at Jeffreys Bay uses traditional and highly effective shore-based tactics. Large baits are deployed, either by casting or using drones, and scent trails drift through the current, drawing in ocean predators. Multiple rods are typically spread out along the beach and fished in rotation, ensuring everyone gets a fair share of the action.
While waiting for a screaming run from a big fish, there’s also the option to lighten things up. Surf fishing with smaller lures and soft plastics can be incredibly productive, with species like Kob, Garrick, and White Steenbras providing exciting light-tackle sport.
Each fishing session is guided by experts who know the coastline intimately. From expansive sandy beaches to rugged ledges and tide-sensitive hotspots, they’ll take you to the most productive marks based on daily conditions.
One of the big draws at Jeffreys Bay is the quality of the gear. All tackle is provided and built to handle the demands of extreme shore-based shark fishing, from heavy-duty rods and reels to end tackle capable of taming the biggest specimens. All bait is included, ensuring you’re fully equipped and ready to fish from day one.
At Jeffreys Bay, you’re in the hands of one of South Africa’s most experienced and decorated shore-fishing professionals. Leading the guiding team is Gerhard Guse, a name synonymous with success along the Eastern Cape coastline. With a fishing career spanning the mid-1980s, Gerhard brings a lifetime of local knowledge, competitive expertise, and a passion for the sport.
Widely respected across South Africa’s sportfishing community, Gerhard has landed countless trophy-class fish and has represented his country at the highest level. He has an impressive list of achievements:
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying your hand at shark fishing for the first time, Gerhard will be by your side throughout the trip. From bait preparation and long-distance casting to landing your catch and capturing the perfect photo, his support is hands-on and tailored to your needs. His calm, approachable style ensures that every angler, regardless of experience, gets the most out of their time on the water.
