Brilliant Blue Water Fishing

Mexico is situated in the south of North America, sharing land borders with the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south. It has over 9,330 kilometres of stunning coastline, with the Gulf of Mexico to the east and the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez to the west.

With so much rich saltwater, it’s no surprise that Mexico is renowned for its fantastic blue water and big game fishing opportunities, attracting anglers from all around the globe.

The fertile waters off the west coast, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, are teeming with life. The Baja Peninsula, a spot where the tranquil warm ocean currents meet the North American continental landmass, is a name synonymous with fishermen worldwide and is a true anglers paradise.

A genuine bucket list trip, a Mexico fishing holidays, will give you the chance to tick many different saltwater species off your list; it offers most of the pelagic species that inshore and offshore fishing is known for. It’s famous for it’s fantastic Marlin and Sailfish fishing, but it provides much more than that, with Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado offshore and then an abundance of Roosterfish, Jacks and Cubera Snapper inshore. It’s often referred to as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is fishing so good?

The waters around the Palmas De Cortez is the area where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean; here, there’s an incredible depth of water and a myriad of underwater canyons, creating a place of substantial marine diversity. This upsurge of nutrients brings in vast shoals of Sardines, Herring and other small baitfish; following them come the Bonito and Skipjack and hunting them, the anglers quarry of big pelagics.

This area of angling interest isn’t far from the mainland of Palmas De Cortez, meaning you’re fishing within a matter of minutes; this is a huge advantage to many other destinations, where the steam out to the big game fishing marks can be over an hour.

What Species Can I Catch?

Mexico fishing holidays offer the big game angler the chance to target and catch a vast array of different species. Generally, the angling is split into two main types: offshore fishing, which is traditionally big game trolling for species like Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and Dorados, and then inshore fishing, which favoured techniques include popper and bait fishing for Roosterfish and many different types of Jack and Snappers.

How Many Fish Can You Catch?

As with all fishing, the time of year you travel, the weather and tides will affect how many fish you catch. But one of the main factors is deciding on what you want to fish for on your Mexico fishing holiday. If you decide to head offshore and target the Billfish, then one fish a day would be an ideal expectation; anything over this would be classed as a bonus. However, you can expect to be kept busy with action from the other species, such as Tuna and Dorado.

In general, the lure and bait fishing inshore is always guaranteed to be a good day with lots of action from the Jacks and Snappers, and if you are lucky enough, you will get to see a colossal Rooster or two.

How Big Do The Fish Grow?

Offshore the Blue Marlin average between 200-300lb, the Sailfish 80lb and the Tuna anywhere between 10-200lb depending on the time of year.

Inshore, the Jacks and Snapper average around 10-15lb but provide fantastic sport on light tackle and a great days fishing. The average-sized Roosterfish is around 20lb, but there is an excellent chance of a trophy fish exceeding 50lb.

Peak Season

The season runs from April to November, with May and September the best two months, as this is when the Tuna and Dorado run. May sees lots of good-sized Marlin, and September is a great month purely because of the vast array of species on offer and catchable.

Whenever you decide to travel, we do highly recommend looking at a moon phase calendar. We would recommend the time leading up to a ‘new moon’ as the predators will feed more during the day than the night.

Other Activities

Depending on how active you want your holiday to be, you can pick some alternative activities to suit. If you like to be more involved, you can try your hand at paddleboarding, jet-skiing, horse riding, golf and tennis. You can also hire quad and mountain bikes from the reception.

If you prefer something a little more relaxed, then there’s an onsite spa, hot tub area and swimming pool with a swim-up bar.

The bustling area of Cabo isn’t too far away either and is an ideal place to shop, eat and drink, with all manner of different shops, bars and restaurants.
