FAQ

West Ranga Lodge sits near Hella in southern Iceland, a two-hour drive from Reykjavík, overlooking the famous West Ranga River.
The West Ranga is Iceland’s most productive Atlantic Salmon river, often recording over 6,000 fish landed per season and peaking at more than 10,000 in 2009.
The river holds strong runs of Atlantic Salmon, with many fish exceeding 20lb, and consistent numbers caught throughout the summer.
The prime season runs from mid-June to mid-October, when fresh Salmon enter the system daily and water conditions remain stable.
It’s entirely spring-fed, ensuring steady temperature and flow all season, and is supported by a successful smolt-releasing programme.
The West Ranga allows a maximum of 18 rods per day, fished on a rotating beat schedule to ensure everyone enjoys equal access to its pools and waterfalls. Fishing is based on two rods per guide, with friendly, English-speaking guides who know the river intimately. Rod sharing is also available, making trips flexible and cost-effective.
Most pools suit single-handed rods, though double-handers are best for covering big water and casting in the prevailing Icelandic winds. All tackle must be disinfected before fishing.
Productive methods include fishing with sink tips and smaller flies, with hitched or stripped Sunray Shadows often effective in warmer weather.
The lodge offers comfortable riverside accommodation, gourmet dining, a well-stocked tackle shop, and stunning views of the Icelandic landscape — perfect for relaxing after a day’s fishing.
Its combination of prolific Salmon runs, beautiful scenery, and world-class guiding make it one of the best Atlantic Salmon experiences in the world.
