Kwanza Tarpon Lodge | Lure & Popper Fishing | Angola

Tour code: ANG001

Fly out to Kwanza Lodge and experience the best Tarpon fishing Angola has to offer. With unimaginable Tarpon fishing at the stunning Kwanza fishing Lodge. Our Tarpon fishing Angola tours are quickly becoming one of our most popular Big Game fishing packages. Kwanza Lodge, one of the best Angola fishing lodges, is situated amongst some of the most beautiful scenery known to man. With over 40 miles of untouched beaches on one side of the Lodge. On the other hand, there is the fish packed River Cuanza. Kwanza River fishing offers a fantastic opportunity to catch Tarpon.

The huge Tarpon and the super-hard fighting Giant Threadfins are what attracts anglers from across the globe. Once hooked, you may find yourself giving up your regular fishing to spend all your time solely on Angola fishing tours. Many of the waters surrounding this Lodge have seen little to no fishing pressure. So the fish numbers are still very high. With Kwanza Lodge practising a good catch and release policy, numbers should stay high. They are making this one of the best Angola fishing spots available. The River Cuanza use to hold the Tarpon record back in the ’70s, and will not be long before another is caught. Tarpon fishing Angola gives it’s visitors the opportunity to land a record-breaking fish.

Kwanza Tarpon Lodge was constructed back in the ’90s and was built on stilts on the banks of the Kwanza River famous for its giant Tarpon and is close to the mouth of the mighty river. For many years, anglers from around the world fished this little unheard piece of paradise. They kept quiet about how excellent the fishing was. Then there was civil unrest which put a stop to people travelling there. Now that the country is slowly recovering, people are starting to head back there in search of the mighty Silver King.

This recovery process is transforming Kwanza Lodge into one of the best fishing spots in Angola. With Kwanza Lodge located at the mouth of the mighty River Cuanza, you have the best of both worlds. Firstly, when the Tarpon enters the river system to escape the open ocean currents. Secondly, when the Tarpon cruise the shoreline you have direct access to this as well.

Tarpon fishing Angola is varied with the opportunity to one day, fish the freshwaters of the river Cuanza. The next you could be offshore fishing for enormous Marlin. The guides will make sure that all your requirements are catered for. So if you wish to troll all day or even popper fish, then this will be tailored into your itinerary. Another reason why big game fishing Angola is such a sought after destination. The main species targeted at this destination are Tarpon which grows over 200lb, Cubera Snappers to 100lb, African Threadfin to 90lb and some super-sized Jacks. Tarpon fishing Angola makes you realise how good Tarpon fishing can be. Make sure to stop by our Big Game Facebook Community group to share your experiences, best catches and fishing tips.

You also have the usual offshore species available from huge Marlin to shoals of Tuna. It is a multi-species destination suitable for all levels of fishing experience. The primary technique will be lure and popper fishing for most of these species from large poppers to small vertical jigs most of the species will be more than willing to take a well-presented lure. While lure or popper fishing is the most practised technique, a slowly drifted live or dead-bait free-lined on a circle hook trips up some of the wariest of species. The offshore species are targeted by trolling either soft lures or live baits.

When you find big shoals of busting Tuna, then a big cast of a popper will work very well, and the results will be explosive. Kwanza Lodge has a couple of very well equipped fishing boats for both inshore and offshore fishing. They come equipped with all the trolling equipment, but if you intend on lure fishing, you will need to bring all the equipment yourself.

The Angola fishing guides at Kwanza Lodge are used to fishing many different styles and will accommodate lure, fly or bait fishing. Their knowledge of these waters and the species you will be targeting is second to none. On each boat, you will be accompanied by a very knowledgable captain. The captain will help with rigging up, casting techniques and of course, taking that trophy shot. Questions & Answers

Where is the Lodge?

Kwanza Lodge is in northern Angola a short 80km from the main airport of Luanda and is located on the banks of the awe-inspiring Kwanza River which is home to some amazing wildlife and a magnet to many different bird species who use the river for fresh drinking water.

Where do they fish?

There are three main areas where all the fishing takes place. You have the river fishing which is for Threadfins, then you have the inshore fishing for lots of Jacks and other species then the other area is the offshore fishing for such species as Marlin, Dorado and Sailfish. All the fishing areas are located very close to the Kwanza Tarpon Lodge

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

As mentioned above there are many different areas and depending on what you wish to target. The Kwanza River offers some fantastic areas to fish and these are only located a short ride away from 1 minute to 30 minutes further downstream. The offshore fishing varies from the inshore marks, located around 10 minutes from the lodge, to the further offshore marks which can be anything from 45 minutes to 1hr 30 minutes.

What fish will I catch?

The good thing about this part of the world is the variety of species available. In a weeks fishing, you can target Tarpon, Cubera Snapper, Gaint barracuda, Crevalle Jack, Longfin Jack, variety of Tunas, Giant African threadfin, sailfish, Dorado and Marlin. There are many other species available from reef fish (snappers, groupers) to other freshwater fish and these other species provide great sport on light tackle and are a good way of ticking many different fish species off your list.

How many fish will I catch?

Depending on which species you go to target but on average you should expect 5 – 15 fishing a day. Conditions also play a big role and depend if you are onshore or offshore. If you are out looking for Billfish then expect 1 fish a day. Inshore fishing will see much higher numbers.

Do the guides speak English?

There is one guide that speaks fluent English and the rest speak 50% English and can communicate very well. Most fishing guides speak what we class as fishing English and will understand most species names and also hand gestures.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This destination suits sport fishing anglers and game fishing anglers. A knowledge of saltwater angling will come in handy but isn’t necessary. When you request to go lure fishing knowledge of working certain lures helps but the guides will help you. Trolling out in the ocean you will not need an experience

What skill level is required?

Fishing skills aren’t required, the guides are passionate and excited to help you to enjoy your fishing experience. General knowledge of fishing is an advantage

How physically demanding is this trip?

Excluding travelling its not very physical, the fights with big fish species are the most demanding and can last a while. If you are not physically fit then there are species that are easy to reel in but still great fun. The guides will also help to make your day as enjoyable as it can be by helping with encouragement whilst playing big fish.

When to go?

Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Sailfish, Dorado and Marlin would be from November to March from April to October river fishing is great for Snapper, Threadfin, Giant Barracuda and Corvina

How to get there?

Fly into Luanda then we pick you up and head 80km south to the kwanza river where the lodge is via private transfer. This journey can be a little bumpy through some stages but most of the journey is on a good road surface.

What is the accommodation like?

There are air-conditioned wooden chalets dotted around the resort each with a double and single bed and en-suite bathrooms. Each chalet has a veranda with a couple of seats so you can soak up the evening sunsets. Depending on which chalets you get allocated most of them come with stunning views across the Kwanza River which is a magnet to all manner of wildlife.

What is the food like?

Variety of western and Angolan style buffet. We do cater for special requests. All meals are made from locally sourced produce and our chefs create some wonderful dishes. There are daily menus which can be viewed in reception each day.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

All of the trolling equipment is included but if you would like to do any lure or popper fishing you will need to provide this yourself. We can provide a list of recommended tackle to take with you from what lures, hooks and weights. The guides will also recommend to us what is working at any given time so we can keep you up to date with what is working. A good variety of small poppers, small shallow diving lures and a selection of jigs will be enough.

Is internet and phone signal available?

WiFi is available in and around the restaurant which is free to join, just ask reception for password and there is a phone signal available.

Are there other activities available?

We have a wonderful boat ride upriver into nature where you can spot monkeys and many bird species. Game drives are also available to the game park very close by. For golf enthusiasts, we can organise a round of golf at the adjacent golf course. Horse trails are also available.  We have a lovely swimming pool on the deck to relax on an off day as well.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view all available weeks and prices click the ‘Dates & Prices’ tab on our tour page.
