Popper & Jig Fishing | Long Reef | Papua New Guinea

Tour code: PNG001

Every lure angler across the globe has heard of the phenomenal fishing opportunities that Papua New Guinea (PNG) offers from the amazing surface popper action for huge GT’s, deeper reef edges for patrolling Doggies then you have the awesome colourful Wrasse like no others on the planet, team this with one of the best fishing companies that fish these waters and you will soon find yourself in lure fishing heaven. Wari Long Reef is a part of the Trobriand islands found in Milne bay Region of Papua New Guinea. This system boasts a myriad of pristine reefs and islands that houses the famous Sportfish like Dogtooths, Giant Trevallies and Napoleon Wrasse.

Papua New Guinea is a country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and encompasses the eastern half of New Guinea the world’s second-largest island; the Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain, New Ireland, the Admiralty Islands, and several others); Bougainville and Buka (part of the Solomon Islands chain); and small offshore islands and atolls. The national capital, Port Moresby, is located in south-eastern New Guinea on the Coral Sea.

Due to its tropical location, Papua New Guinea offers two main fishing seasons. The wet season and the dry season. During the Wet season, avoiding the south-easterly winds (December – May) the fishing is mainly out to sea targeting the very popular Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna and other reef and pelagic species. During the Dry season (June – November) when the rivers are at their lowest there is the opportunity to head into the most remote of the river spots to target the Papua New Guinea Black Bass and Barramundi so with both these great fishing opportunities they can offer fishing year-round.

The reefs that surround Wari Long Reef are so packed with baitfish and other smaller pieces of food items it is no wonder that so many anglers flock to this part of the world to take advantage of some of the best popper and jigging opportunities the world has to offer. Sport Fishing PNG have decades worth of experience and the professional crew and guides will ensure you have the trip of a lifetime.

Once you have landed you will be transferred to the mothership called K20 where you will then head out overnight to arrive at your main fishing location first thing in the morning. This is the perfect time to get all your fishing tackle prepped and talk all things fishy. Over the next 6 days, you will be taken out to some awesome fishing spots around the islands where you will get the chance to witness what these chain of islands have to offer. Papua New Guinea has built its reputation on the amazing fishing and you will now get to witness it.

The fishing styles are mainly popper and jig fishing in and around the small islands and atolls, fishing shallow areas working big chugging poppers to the deeper areas that are perfect for some arm wrenching jigging action. When you are targeting GT’s it is important to be adaptive and change things at the drop of a hat, they are natural hunters that are born to test your angling skills, you will literally need to carry a small arsenal of poppers to try and cover every eventuality. Take a selection of big poppers and smaller ones and a general rule of thumb is the bigger poppers will catch the bigger GT’s but be warned if you are not a seasoned GT angler then casting these heavy lures all day will take its toll so having some smaller ones will certainly see you casting for longer.

When you are fishing the outer reefs (deeper water) with jigs targeting the very sought after Dogtooth Tuna, be prepared to lose more than you catch. Luring and then fighting a Dogtooth is hard work, be prepared for physical pain as the most popular and efficient way of targeting these is to jig fish. To tempt a Doggie to take your jig can be very strenuous in itself depending on your level of fitness, then once you have that bite then prepare to be left breathless and sometimes even bought to tears. Doggies can be caught from a huge array of depths from 1m to 350m so going in prepared is the key to success.

Fishing Boats

The fishing is performed from two 28ft centre console boats and two smaller pangas to take advantage of everything the reef systems have to offer. From threading the skinniest coral flats to popping for GT’s and Jigging the depths for Dogtooth, Sportfishing PNG will make sure that they are ready for any locations and bring you where the fish are.

Guides and Crew

All the guides and crew speak very good English and they have been fishing these waters for many years now and have built Sportfishing PNG to where it is now. Their knowledge and passion for all fishing styles show through from the moment you will meet them. It isn’t just the fishing guides that make this one of the best operations, it’s the people in the background, the chef on the K20 who will freshly prepare food and drinks to ensure your energy levels are kept up, it’s the guys that maintain the mothership and service the boats. This whole operation is as slick as possible and once you have fished with the entire team you will realise that you couldn’t be in better hands.

Other Activities

As you will be mainly living on the K20 Mothership there are not many other activities on offer. You will get the chance to do some swimming in the crystal clear waters and why not pack a snorkel as you will be surrounded by a hugely vibrant ecosystem.

Questions & Answers

Papua New Guinea is a country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and encompasses the eastern half of New Guinea the world’s second-largest island; the Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain, New Ireland, the Admiralty Islands, and several others); Bougainville and Buka (part of the Solomon Islands chain); and small offshore islands and atolls. The national capital, Port Moresby, is located in south-eastern New Guinea on the Coral Sea.

As you will be anchored up and living on the K20 mothership the fishing grounds are all very close by. Depending on your chosen style of fishing some grounds are up to 30-minute boat ride while others are as close as 10 minutes. The advantage of staying on a mothership is that you are on top of the best fishing marks at all times so no time wasted getting to them.

The main target when travelling to this part of Papua New Guinea is the GT’s, Dogtooth Tuna and Napoleon Wrasse. There are many other reef fish you will encounter from many different types of Snappers to huge Barracuda. If you speak with your captain each day and inform them on what you would like to target then he will make a plan around your species of choice. Each day can be very different so if they say that the tide, wind or any other factors will give you less chance then make sure you have a backup plan.

This all depends on how active you are. Popper and jig fishing is very strenuous and performing these styles all day takes some doing. The more active you are the more fishing you will catch. On average for a good days popper fishing you should expect to hook at least 5 – 6 fish each day. When jigging the numbers go up as there are more species that feed below the surface, so on good days jigging you would expect to catch upwards of 12 fish. Again, this all depends on the weather, the time of year and the tides. You captain will advise each day what your chances are and will pick areas given the conditions.

The two main styles will be popper and jig fishing. Popper fishing involves casting out heavy surface poppers and retrieving them at a constant speed making a loud splashing noise as you reel it in. This will pull surface feeding fish up to the top to chase down your lure, the more active you can make the lure the more fish you will pull up. It’s always worth changing your lures as one colour will work on one day and not the next so make sure you change things up regularly. Jig fishing is also hard work but with some practise it can be deadly for these type of fish, you will let your jig to the bottom while keeping in constant contact with it as sometimes the lure will get hit on the way down then once you feel it hit the bottom you will need to work the lure back towards you in fast jagged movements. Once you are about 5m from the surface let the jig back down again but make sure you keep feeling it down. Again with jig fishing, it is important to keep changing things as one colour or shape will work one day then not the next. Speak to your captain each day and see what he recommends.

All the guides speak very good English. It may be worth taking a foreign language app with you for when you are back on the mainland as it is always nice for local people to see that you are trying to speak their own language.

People with a good knowledge of both popper and jig fishing are best suited to this destination. People who are looking for one of the best sportfishing destinations in the world and someone who isn’t afraid of a little adventure.

Knowledge of popper and jig fishing is essential as this style of fishing is hard work and having performed this style of fishing before will, of course, put more fish in the boat.

The trip is very physically demanding due to the long hours of standing and casting heavy poppers and working heavy jigs. The heat adds to this and will break many unfit people. So make sure you head to the gym before your trip as casting heavy lures all day is hard work on its own let alone reeling really big fish in.

Due to its tropical location, the country offers 2 main fishing seasons; the Wet and the Dry. Avoiding the South-Easterly winds during the Wet season (December – May), we head out to sea targeting our beloved Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, and other reef and pelagic species.

The best route from the UK is a flight to Singapore, then from Singapore to Port Moresby where you will then overnight. The next day its a small flight from Port Moresby to Alotau where a representative from Sportfishing PNG will then transfer you to the marina where you will board the mother ship.

The K20 mothership is very nice with plenty of room. There are 4 main bedrooms with 2 staterooms. The entertaining lounge is fully airconditioned and is a great place to chat about the days fishing. Outside you will find a large decked area where most of the meals and drinks will take place. The mothership is far from basic and you shouldn’t want for much while being on board.

Onboard the K20 mothership there is a local chef who will freshly prepare food each day. Breakfasts consist of cereals, fresh fruits, cheeses, meats and small cakes. Lunches while out fishing will consist of freshly made sandwiches/rolls of meats, cheeses, fish and vegetarian options. Even meals are always tasty and also freshly prepared by the onboard chef. There will mainly consist of fresh-caught fish, meats, salads, vegetarian dishes and other options along with some great fresh deserts. If you have dirty needs please make us aware and we will accommodate where possible.

K20 mothership does not provide any tackle. You will have to bring all your own rods for both popper and jig fishing, you will need reels and all the relevant tackle items. We can provide a comprehensive list of required tackle upon booking.

When on the mainland there is good phone signal and free WIFI at the hotel however when you board the mothership there will be little to no phone signal and no WIFI. There is a satellite phone onboard but normally only used for emergencies.

As you will be spending most of your time on board the mother ship there is not much else to do apart from fish. When you are back on the mainland there will be the normal tourist activities that you would find at any other tourist city.

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel we can book just the mothership and fishing for you.

Had a great time on the trip, friendly crew, delicious food and some eye-opening fish around. Thanks for the hospitality!

Had an awesome trip this year cant wait to get stuck in next year again! Great set up on K20 and the guides were awesome

Travelled with SFPNG many time now. Their number one goal is to help you catch your dream fish and they have access to some of the most remote areasin the world. Can’t speak highly enough of them!

This is the last wild frontier for fishing. Have a look at the pictures, you'll be amazed.

The best time ever. Great crew amazing boat and an awesome place. Will definitely be heading back thanks

Had the most epic trip. Great crew and guides, food was off the hook and first-class fishing it's a must-do!!

Been out with the sfpng crew a few times now. I prefer to call their trips a fishing holiday. As your very comfortable aboard the air conditioned mothership K2O and the food is excellent other operations could learn a thing or two. Fishing boats are now all Centre consoles and have quality electronics which is vital in opening up the at times crazy fishing potential of png. The number of crew almost matched the anglers and made every effort to make our trip and pleasurable as possible.

Also worth a mention we were picked up from the airport and always kept safe at no time did we feel like we were in any danger.

Highly recommended fishing charter operation.

Le Hua

I just came home from my second blue water trip with sfpng and I can’t wait to go again! The fishing is unreal with big fish smashing poppers and jigs at every turn, the accommodations are excellent (the boats are well kept and comfortable) and the crew is top-notch and will go above and beyond to put you on fish and make you feel at home, one other thing to note is the wide variety of foods to eat on the mothership, it’s like eating at a five-star restaurant, thanks sfpng for another great trip, see you next year!
