Popper & Jig Fishing Papua New Guinea Amazing Topwater Sportfishing

Customer Rating 94%

Papua New Guinea: Popper & Jig Fishing Adventure

In the wild waters of Papua New Guinea, few fisheries match the raw power and variety found when casting poppers and working heavy jigs across reefs, drop-offs, and bluewater edges. This is frontier sportfishing at its most extreme, where every strike threatens to test tackle to breaking point. With remote grounds that see little pressure, the scale of the fish and the aggression of the takes set this destination apart.

The reef systems are home to Giant Trevally, the signature species here, with fish over 50kg landed every season. Dogtooth Tuna patrol the deeper edges, hitting jigs with bone-crunching power, while Napoleon Wrasse, Red Bass, Grouper, and Coral Trout keep rods bent close to the reef. Offshore, Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, and Wahoo add further challenge, ensuring no two days are ever the same. The fishing is highly visual and demanding, with explosive surface strikes on poppers and relentless deep-water battles on jigs. Anglers need both stamina and determination, but the rewards are immense.

Accommodation is in a comfortable oceanfront lodge, with spacious en-suite rooms, a pool, and a bar overlooking the water. Meals combine fresh local seafood with international dishes, creating a welcome balance of comfort and energy after long days at sea. Non-anglers can enjoy snorkelling, cultural tours, or simply relax by the coast, immersed in the atmosphere of this remote Pacific setting.

Papua New Guinea offers one of the most intense and rewarding jig and popper experiences in the world. With trophy GTs, brutal Dogtooth Tuna, and a setting few anglers will ever reach, it is a holiday defined by power, rarity, and adventure at the very edge of the sport.

"I just came home from my second blue water trip with sfpng and I can’t wait to go again! The fishing is unreal with big fish smashing poppers and jigs at every turn, the accommodations are excellent (the boats are well kept and comfortable) and the crew is top-notch and will go above and beyond to put you on fish and make you feel at home, one other thing to note is the wide variety of foods to eat on the mothership, it’s like eating at a five-star restaurant, thanks sfpng for another great trip, see you next year!"

"Been out with the sfpng crew a few times now. I prefer to call their trips a fishing holiday. As your very comfortable aboard the air conditioned mothership K2O and the food is excellent other operations could learn a thing or two. Fishing boats are now all Centre consoles and have quality electronics which is vital in opening up the at times crazy fishing potential of png. The number of crew almost matched the anglers and made every effort to make our trip and pleasurable as possible.

Also worth a mention we were picked up from the airport and always kept safe at no time did we feel like we were in any danger.

Highly recommended fishing charter operation.

Papua New Guinea Fishing Charters

Every lure angler across the globe has heard of the phenomenal fishing opportunities that Papua New Guinea (PNG) offers, from the fantastic surface popper action for huge GT’s, deeper reef edges for patrolling Doggies. Then you have the awesome colourful Wrasse like no others on the planet; team this with one of the best Papua new guinea fishing charters companies that fish these waters, and you will soon find yourself in lure fishing heaven.

The holiday, based on a live-aboard mother ship called K20, and this mothership is luxurious. The great thing about this holiday is that you will get to fish waters that other land-based operation can not reach. These fishing grounds are always better as they see less pressure.

Wari Long Reef is a part of the Trobriand islands found in the Milne bay Region of Papua New Guinea. This system boasts many pristine reefs and islands that house famous Sportfish like Dogtooths, Giant Trevallies and Napoleon Wrasse.

The fishing styles are mainly popper and jig fishing in and around the small islands and atolls, shallow fishing areas working big chugging poppers to the deeper areas perfect for some arm wrenching jigging action.

Where is Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is a country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and encompasses the eastern half of New Guinea, the world’s second-largest island; the Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain, New Ireland, the Admiralty Islands, and several others); Bougainville and Buka (part of the Solomon Islands chain); and tiny offshore islands and atolls. The national capital, Port Moresby, is located in south-eastern New Guinea on the Coral Sea.

Due to its tropical location, Papua new guinea fishing charters offers two main fishing seasons. The wet season and the dry season. During the Wet season, avoiding the south-easterly winds (December – May), the fishing is mainly out to sea, targeting the very popular Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna and other reef and pelagic species.

During the Dry season (June – November), when the rivers are at their lowest, there is the opportunity to head into the most remote river spots to target the Papua New Guinea Black Bass and Barramundi. With both these great fishing opportunities, they can offer fishing year-round.

People worldwide head to this area, especially popper and lure anglers, as the waters are the correct temperature for some of the best topwater action the world offers. To see other destinations like this head to our Youtube Channel

Where will we fish in PNG

The reefs that surround Wari Long Reef packed with baitfish and other smaller pieces of food items; it is no wonder that so many anglers flock to Papua new guinea fishing charters in this part of the world to take advantage of some of the best popper and jigging opportunities the world has to offer. Sport Fishing PNG have decades worth of experience, and the professional crew and guides will ensure you have a lifetime trip.

Over the next six days, you will get taken out to some excellent fishing spots around the islands, where you will get the chance to witness what these chain of islands have to offer. Papua New Guinea has built its reputation on fantastic fishing, and you will now get to see it.

How to fish in Papua New Guinea

When targeting GT’s, it is essential to be adaptive and change things at the drop of a hat. They are natural hunters born to test your angling skills; you will need to carry a small arsenal of poppers to cover every eventuality.

Take a selection of big poppers and smaller ones, and a general rule of thumb is the more giant poppers you use, you will catch the bigger GT’s. Be warned if you are not a seasoned GT angler, then casting these heavy lures all day will take its toll, so having some smaller ones will undoubtedly see you casting for longer.

When fishing the outer reefs (deeper water) on your Papua new guinea fishing charters with jigs targeting the very sought after Dogtooth Tuna, be prepared to lose more than you catch. Luring and then fighting a Dogtooth is hard work, be prepared for physical pain as the most popular and efficient way of targeting these is to jig fish. To tempt a Doggie to take your jig can be very strenuous in itself depending on your fitness level, then once you have that bite, prepare to be left breathless and sometimes even bought to tears. Doggies get caught from a considerable array of depths from 1m to 350m, so going in prepared is the key to success.

Fishing Boats In Papua New Guinea

Once you have landed, you will get transferred to the mothership called K20 by the guys at Papua new guinea fishing charters, where you will then head out overnight to arrive at your primary fishing location first thing in the morning. The perfect time to get all your fishing tackle prepped and talk all things fishy. The fishing is performed from two 28ft centre console boats and two smaller pangas to take advantage of everything the reef systems offer. From threading the skinniest coral flats to popping for GT’s and Jigging the depths for Dogtooth, Sportfishing PNG will make sure that they are ready for any locations and bring you where the fish are. Take a look at really useful blog on Top 10 tips for successful popper fishing

Guides and Crew In PNG

The guides and crew on the Papua new guinea fishing charters speak excellent English, and they have been fishing these waters for many years now and have built Sportfishing PNG to where it is now. Their knowledge and passion for all fishing styles show through from the moment you will meet them.

It isn’t just the fishing guides that make this one of the best operations; it’s the people in the background, the chef on the K20 who will freshly prepare food and drinks to ensure your energy levels are high; it’s the guys that maintain the mothership and service the boats. This whole operation is as slick as possible, and once you have fished with the entire team, you will realise that you couldn’t be in better hands.
