Deep Sea Fishing | Saltstraumen Brygge | Bodø | Norway

Overview

Tour code: NOR041

The Saltstraumen fishing around Bodo in northern Norway offers the travelling anglers a huge amount of different fishing areas from fish-filled sheltered fjords to the open ocean of the Norwegian Sea you will always find a great fishing opportunity around every corner.

Saltstraumen is called one of the Wild Wonders of Europe and is world-famous for its maelstrom which is one of the world’s strongest at a normal speed of 10-12 knots. Saltstraumen’s depth is about 30 meters in the strait. Saltstraumen goes strongly around the full moon and new moon, and often 2 to 3 days thereafter. During the main tourist season, this world-famous attraction sees on average around 200,000 people visit Saltstraumen which makes the area one of northern Norway’s most visited attractions.

Saltstraumen Fishing for Cod and Halibut In Bodø Norway

Saltstraumen and Saltenfjord are very famous sea fishing areas in Norway for both inshore and offshore fishing. The huge attraction to these areas is the fact that they are not reliant on the weather, regardless of wind and conditions you will always find somewhere to fish. When fishing around Bodo the unique makeup of the surrounding landscape gives the saltwater angler a huge array of features and structures to target. Once you leave the marina you will instantly see why this area is great for Halibut fishing due to the shallow grounds and many different islands. Then these landscapes give way to the rich open ocean, which is a true anglers dream and is where you will find huge Norwegian Cod stocks and busting shoals of Coalfish as they hunt down their daily baitfish. As you progress out into the deeper waters you just never know what will take your rigs, from huge Redfish to deep-water skate and the very odd Ratfish. All the sea fishing around Bodo needs to be carefully protected so please abide by the Norwegian fishery rules of what you can and cannot take, remember there are size limits on all fish and more importantly there are weight limits on what you can take home. Please practise Catch and Release where ever possible so we can continue to offer this amazing fishing for generations to come.

All of your self-drive boat fishing will be done by drifting areas that look like fish-holding areas. We have hundreds of pre-programmed known fishing marks, but always remember that there are other areas that may have never been fished before, so if the known areas are not producing then try to locate new marks as you may well be pleasantly surprised with your results. One area that you really should try at least once during your stay would be the main Saltstraumen where the tide rushes along, this area potentially holds some great opportunities for some huge Halibut.

The Saltstraumen fishing area around Bodo isn’t famous for one specific species but is known for being a great mixed species destination due to the unique inshore and offshore fishing that it offers. So if you are a confident boat angler then head off to the deeper waters located a short drive from the marina where you could be targeting cod well over 50lb, or try some shallow banks which hold massive shoals of the super hard fighting Coalfish. If you are mainly looking for Halibut, then there are so many different bays to try and shallow banks that cry out for a slowly drifted dead bait perfectly placed ready for one of these huge Halibut to grab.

Questions & Answers

WHERE IS THE CAMP?

Saltstraumen is called one of the Wild Wonders of Europe and is world-famous for its maelstrom which is one of the world’s strongest at a normal speed of 10-12 knots. Saltstraumen’s depth is about 30 meters in the strait. Saltstraumen goes strongly around the full moon and new moon, and often 2 to 3 days thereafter. During the main tourist season, this world-famous attraction sees on average around 200,000 people visit Saltstraumen which makes the area one of northern Norway’s most visited attractions.

WHERE DO THEY FISH?

The area around Bodø is very large and with many different fishing areas. You will find some very sheltered fjords if its a windy day and then you have the open ocean which is around 40 minutes from the marina. The maelstrom located directly in front of the cabins is a very popular area for Coalfish and some very good Cod fishing. This area has the fastest tide rip around the world and holds some pretty impressive fish stocks. Mainly Coalfish with the odd very large Cod.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH THE FISHING GROUNDS?

Some of the fishing marks are as close as 5 minutes from leaving the dock. If you choose to fish the strat outside the cabins which are very productive for large Cod and Coalfish then this is only minutes from your door. The open ocean marks are as far as 40 – 60 minutes from the dock.

WHAT FISH WILL I CATCH?

In the waters of Norway, there are many different species to catch. The main ones that many people target are Cod, Coalfish, Halibut, Plaice and Wolfish. However, there are many other species that can be targeted on LRF gear. These micro species can be caught from the shore around rocky outcrops.

HOW MANY FISH WILL I CATCH?

This all depends on what you are fishing for at any given time. If you fish for Cod and Coalfish then you should expect much fish during your session, but if you choose to target Halibut, then these are a little active fishing, and you could just catch one per day but that one fish could be huge.

HOW DO THEY FISH?

All the fishing is done by boat and drifting will be the main way of fishing. Methods all depends on your chosen species. For deeper water fishing we would recommend a silver pirk fished near the bottom. For Halibut fishing in shallower waters, you can either target them with shads your dead bait rigs. There are lots of blogs on our website that will help you along the way.

DO THE GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH?

The on-site staff all speak very good English. Where ever in the world you go its always nice for the local people if you learn a little of the local language but it is not necessary.

WHO IS BEST SUITED TO THIS DESTINATION?

Beginners to experienced anglers will be welcome at this destination. The owners will make you feel very welcome as soon as you arrive. Having a little boating knowledge will help you more, but it is not necessary. There are flat calm fjords if you just fancy drifting around all day, but if you are feeling a little more adventurous then head out to the open ocean in search of some bigger fish

WHAT SKILL LEVEL IS REQUIRED?

Some boat handling experience would be an advantage, however it is not necessary. The boats are very easy to use and you will get a little introduction when you arrive. The actual fishing skills required, some boat fishing knowledge will help you catch more fish, but not necessary as there are many YouTube videos on the Sportquest Holidays YouTube Channel that will help with advice.

HOW PHYSICALLY DEMANDING IS THIS TRIP?

As the walk from the cabin to the boats is only 20metres it is suitable for all. As long as you are able to be either standing or seated on a boat all day then you will be fine.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO?

This destination in Norway is open all year round so peak times will always depend on what your targets are. A good, consistent time of the year to go is July and August but it may not be a peak time for the species you are targeting. If you want very large Cod then March and April are better then May onwards will be better for the Coalfish and Halibut fishing.

HOW WILL I GET THERE?

The normal route is from the UK to Oslo then a second flight from Oslo to Bodo followed by a short transfer to Saltstraumen Brygge. A representative from Saltstraumen will be waiting at the airport to transfer you the short drive.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

The cabins are built to a high standard and vary in sizes. We have cabins for large groups of up to 8 persons and then all the way down to small groups of 2 persons. We are sure you will find a cabin here to suit your group size. Most of the cabins are based on twin rooms with two single beds in each room. Roomy living areas and spacious kitchens. All equipment in the cabins is included with bed linen and towels supplied.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

As mentioned in the accommodation details, this is a self-catering holiday and each cabin comes complete with well-equipped kitchens so you can cook meals each day. Alternatively, there are restaurants nearby, but you would need to book taxi’s as they are not within walking distance. We highly recommend taking an extra bag with you full of food items to make your weekly shopping bill a little less. We have written many blogs on food ideas to take to Norway.

DOES THE LODGE PROVIDE FISHING TACKLE?

Saltstraumen offers very good fishing equipment for hire. Please mention to us at the time of booking if you wish to hire equipment. Even though they have many sets for hire, it is best to prebook them. They have rods and reels to hire for both deep sea fishing and also spinning rods and reels

IS INTERNET AND PHONE SIGNAL AVAILABLE?

The phone signal and Wi-Fi is very good all around the camp and it is free for customers to use. Just ask a member of the staff for the password when you arrive.

ARE THERE OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE?

Bodø & Salten is a paradise for nature and outdoor recreation enthusiasts. You can climb high mountains, hike in scenic national parks and go kayaking in azure blue seas. The region is also a perfect destination for culture enthusiasts, food lovers and thrill-seekers. Given the wide range of activities, attractions and places of interest, the Salten region has something for everyone – young and old, families, groups of friends and couples.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all available weeks and prices click the ‘Dates & Prices’ tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel, we can book just the lodge and fishing for you. If you wish to book or have any questions, please feel free to call our offices on 01603 407596.
