Saltstraumen Brygge Bodø Norway Wild Wonder of Europe

Customer Rating 82%
Tour Code NOR041

One of the most Fish Rich Places in Norway

The Saltstraumen fishing around Bodo in northern Norway offers the travelling anglers a vast amount of different fishing areas from fish-filled sheltered fjords to the Norwegian Sea’s open ocean. You will always find a great fishing opportunity around every corner.

Saltstraumen is called one of the Wild Wonders of Europe and is world-famous for its whirlpool, one of the world’s strongest at an average speed of 10-12 knots. Saltstraumen’s depth is about 30 meters in the strait. Saltstraumen goes strongly around the full moon and new moon, often 2 to 3 days after that. During the primary tourist season, this world-famous attraction sees that around 200,000 people visit Saltstraumen, making the area one of northern Norway’s most visited attractions.

The number of different fishing areas in Saltstraumen will keep the keenest anglers busy and around each corner, you will find huge potential. Some of the best fishing areas are just a few minutes from the cabins and offers fishing for very large Cod, Coalfish and Halibut.

The famous area of Saltstraumen

Saltstraumen fishing and Saltenfjord are very famous sea fishing areas in Norway for both inshore and offshore fishing. The massive attraction to these areas is that they are not reliant on the weather; regardless of wind and conditions, you will always find somewhere to fish. When fishing around Bodo, the surrounding landscape’s unique makeup gives the saltwater angler a vast array of features and structures to target.

The Saltstraumen fishing area around Bodo isn’t famous for one specific species. Still, it is known for being a great mixed species destination due to the unique inshore and offshore fishing. So if you are a confident boat angler, then head off to the deeper waters located a short drive from the marina where you could be targeting cod well over 50lb, or try some shallow banks which hold massive shoals of the super hard fighting Coalfish. If you are mainly looking for Halibut, then there are so many different bays to try and shallow banks that cry out for a slowly drifted dead bait perfectly placed, ready for one of these enormous Halibut to grab.

Fishing Around Bodo

Once you leave the marina, you will instantly see why this area is excellent for Halibut fishing due to the shallow grounds and many different islands. Then these landscapes give way to the rich open ocean, which is a true anglers dream and is where you will find substantial Norwegian Cod stocks and busting shoals of Coalfish as they hunt down their daily baitfish. As you progress out into the deeper waters, you just never know what will take your rigs. From huge Redfish to deep-water skate and the very odd Ratfish.

All the sea fishing around Bodo needs to be carefully protected, so please abide by the Norwegian fishery rules of what you can and cannot take. Remember, there are size limits on all fish, and more importantly, there are weight limits on what you can take home. Please practise Catch and Release where possible to continue to offer this fantastic fishing for generations to come.

All of your self-drive boat fishing will be by drifting areas that look like fish-holding areas. We have hundreds of pre-programmed known fishing marks, so if the known areas are not producing, try to locate new spots as you may well be pleasantly surprised with your results.

Self Drive Boats At Saltstraumen

Saltstraumen Brygge fishing for many years has been increasing its capacity to cope with the growing demand for excellent sea fishing holidays where everything is taken care of. We have access to 36 boats in total, we have 13 x 19ft Kværno boats and 23 x 20ft Gemi boats and all the boats come fitted with very reliable 80hp Honda 4-stroke engines, which are perfect for this sized boats. Each boat comes equipped with a Garmin Plotter and sounder, a rod holder capable of holding 10 rods, and a 73liter petrol tank.

On this holiday, you will be driving the boat yourself, even though there are staff around the resort, you will need to drive the boats yourselves. When you arrive, you will be shown around by the fishing manager, who will direct you to your boat and explain fuel and other helpful information. This is your chance to speak with them to find out where it has been fishing well. They will always be on hand during your stay, so don’t be afraid to ask them for help if you need it. The staff at Saltstraumen Brygge are there to make sure you have the best time and always go above and beyond to help you have the best time; nothing is too much trouble for them.

Do I need Experience

Some boat handling experience would be an advantage. However, it is not necessary. The boats are very easy to use, and you will get a little introduction when you arrive. The primary fishing skills required, some boat fishing knowledge will help you catch more fish, but not necessary as there are many YouTube videos on the Sportquest Holidays YouTube Channel that will help with advice.

Beginners to experienced anglers will be welcome at this destination. The owners will make you feel very welcome as soon as you arrive. Having a little boating knowledge will help you more, but it is not necessary.

David

We had a fantastic week in Saltstraumen, on my boat we landed 2 Halibut over 100cm as well as a whole host of smaller ones. The mixed Cod and Coalfish fishing was brilliant too. We're already looking for some new dates to go back next year!

Richard

Been looking at a trip to Norway for last few years
Finally managed to get there this year as part of my 50th birthday celebrations, wish I’d of gone sooner,
Fantastic experience and the scenery is breathtaking, plenty of fish everyday and kept us busy,no real monsters, the biggest been a 22lb cod
Only downside was the walk to the supermarket and
The strange alcohol laws so I’d recommend taking some and if possible hiring a car
Thanks sportsquest team 👍

Sean

Thank you Sportquest for making my trip to Saltstraumen an absolute dream. From the initial enquiry to Sportquest to the end of the holiday. They were very helpful. The information on the website to the videos on YouTube really do paint the picture of what to expect, and I must say that my expectations were smashed.

The fishing was great and we had a good mix of species. They aren’t monsters but there are plenty of them and will give you a great fight. Although saying that we did land some big hard fighting coal fish. My advice to anyone going out is to do some research and find out what areas fish well on certain tides. It took us a few days of exploring and asking the camp manager before we started to dial in on where the good fishing was to be had.

We hired rods for the trip, but if I was to change anything, I would book a rod tube on to the plane and take my own gear. The rods supplied were a bit stiff (30-50) so you lost a bit of the fight. The camp was happy to exchange my rod for a 20-30 and that was a much better rod to use. I would recommend that anyone travelling with their own equipment take a light spinning rod for the small coal fish while you wait for the right tides to target the big fish. They are great sport on light gear, plus a small coal fish is a great bait for halibut.

The accommodation was really tidy and modern. Comfortable twin rooms and a large communal area with plenty of seating, plus a deck to sit on and sort tackle and plan the next trip out. Most importantly the shower was decent and had decent pressure and enough hot water for 4 people to take a shower one after the other.

The area we stayed in was stunning and Saltstraumen is a very pretty area packed with wildlife. White tailed eagle’s often visited the boat hoping for an opportunity easy meal and dolphins were seen daily. We were very lucky one evening to have a Minke whale circle the boat for around 20 minutes, which was incredible. The Maelstrom it’s self is a sight to behold and I can see why people travel from across the world to see it.
The local shop is a 20 minute walk away, and we were even fortunate to spot a Moose on the way home one evening. It was just another thing that added up to making it a special holiday.

One of the things I thought about before I went was the food prices in Norway, which I know can put people off. But I must say that I found it to be ok. Yes it is a bit more expensive than UK prices, but my advice would be to avoid well know brands and make your selection carefully. The local store in Saltstraumen has its own brand of value item products, which are miles cheaper than branded goods. Beer is not too bad in price as long as you stick to Norwegian brands and that it is below 5%. Note that in Norway you cannot purchase alcohol between 8pm on a Saturday until 8am on a Monday! We found that out when we were there, but a very kind camp guide “lent” us some beer to tide us over.

Overall my friend expectations were smashed and I have done nothing about think of the trip I have just had. Even though I was broken from fishing so much! We certainly made the most of the 24 hour daylight! And we simply fished from morning to evening and they back out after dinner for several hours before heading back to camp for a couple of hours! So, exhausted but very happy fishermen!! Will definitely be back.

Thank you Sportquest

Alistair

A good trip thank you. Fishing was not as good as some other trips I've been on but I appreciate that can vary from week to week/ year to year. Accommodation was very good, spacious, well equipped, clean and tidy. Other facilities on site were excellent with good friendly staff available any time.
Sportquest staff were very good, quick to respond to queries, available when required on the phone and generally helpful at all times. Thanks (esp) to Laura and Paul for clear and prompt communications and advice.
All travel arrangements worked very well with no problems at all.
