When you take a trip to the Akuani Floating Camp, you’ll get to wet a line on the famous Tomo River in Colombia, a haven for anglers and home to a vast array of hard-fighting jungle species.
Nestled in the Vichada region, it’s incredibly diverse, with a limitless mass of structures, white sand beaches, flats, tributaries, and numerous lagoons. It provides the perfect setting for fly and lure fishing, as well as offering ample sight fishing opportunities for its predatory inhabitants. The Peacock Bass, of which there are several different strains, is the main species in the river and can often exceed 20lb, with a handful of fish landed each season pushing nearly 30lb. Along with these colourful jungle creatures, there are also opportunities to catch Payara, Pacu and a range of different Catfish, to mention just a few.
Fishing in the Tomo River is like embarking on a safari. While the water below is alive with life, above, it is equally impressive, as the region is home to over 500 species of birds, including Macaws, Toucans, and Kingfishers. It’s also common to encounter mammals like Tapirs, Capybaras, and the elusive Jaguar, while reptile enthusiasts might spot the Orinoco Caiman and the Green Anaconda.

Peacock Bass (Cichla Temensis)
Regarded as one of the most iconic sports fish in South America, the Peacock Bass is the largest cichlid in the world. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins, it’s well known for its aggressive strikes, vibrant colouration, and hard-fighting nature. These fish can grow up to 100 cm in length and weigh as much as 30 pounds, making them a thrilling challenge for any angler.
Payara (Hydrolycus Armatus)
Often called the ‘Vampire Fish’, the Payara is a fierce and fast predator, instantly recognisable by its long, dagger-like fangs. Found in fast-flowing waters and rocky river sections, this silver-bodied species can reach over 1 metre in length and exceed 30 pounds. Their explosive takes and powerful runs make them a standout target for adventurous anglers.
Black Pacu (Colossoma Macropomum)
Known for their impressive size and strength, Black Pacu are a fascinating species to catch. Often found in vegetated or structurally rich areas, they primarily feed on fruits, seeds, and plant matter. Their dark colouration and strong, deep-bodied shape make them a challenging yet rewarding catch—and an important species for maintaining ecological balance in the river systems.
Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus Hemioliopterus)
A true heavyweight of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Redtail Catfish is a powerful species known for its broad head, distinctive red-orange tail, and impressive size. These fish can grow to over 1.5 metres and weigh more than 170 pounds. Commonly found in deeper, slow-moving waters with sandy or muddy bottoms, they feed on fish, crustaceans, and plant material and are a favourite for those seeking a true jungle giant.
As well as these popular and more prominent species, it’s also possible to encounter Shovel Nose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum), Amazon Pellona (Pellona Castelnaeana), Arowana (Osteoglossum Bicirrhosum) and Matrinxa (Brycon Amazonicus), to mention just a few.

The Akuani Floating Camp welcomes up to ten anglers each week, with two guests per boat, six full days of fishing, and the support of a knowledgeable, bilingual native guide. These experienced guides know the Tomo River inside and out and are dedicated to ensuring you get the most from each day on the water. If there’s a particular species you’re keen to target, just let your guide know; they’ll always do their best to tailor the day to your preferences.
A typical day on the Tomo River unfolds at a relaxed but purposeful pace, focused entirely on giving you the best possible fishing experience:
6.30am – Breakfast
8.00am – Leave for morning fishing session
12.30pm – Lunch from the coolers, eaten by the water
14.00pm – Afternoon fishing session
17.30pm – Return to the camp, to freshen up
20.00pm – Evening meal

The Akuani Floating Camp is situated in the depths of the Colombian jungle, on the banks of the stunning Tomo River and offers an exclusive and immersive fishing adventure.
The camp features five well-appointed floating cabins, each designed to accommodate two anglers. Every cabin includes electricity, ceiling fans, and private bathrooms with showers, providing a comfortable retreat after a day on the water. With space for up to ten anglers per week, the camp offers an intimate and well-organised experience thoughtfully built with the needs of travelling anglers in mind.
During your stay at Akuani Floating Camp, all meals and drinks are included—excluding spirits, which you’re welcome to bring from duty-free or request in advance for the team to arrange.
Each day, you’ll enjoy three freshly prepared meals cooked by the camp’s private chef. Expect a mix of local flavours and familiar international dishes, all served in a relaxed and comfortable setting. While out on the water, your boat will be stocked with lunch, cold drinks, and snacks, allowing you to enjoy a break by the river without missing a moment of the experience.
Even though the camp is so remote, it’s still equipped with first aid kits, satellite phones and Starlink internet. Global Rescue is also available and something which we would highly recommend.
Note: As an optional add-on, it’s possible to book a professional photographer to join you and your group throughout the duration of your trip, creating lasting memories of your fishing experience.

Once you have landed in La Primavera and collected your bags, you will be transferred by 4×4 vehicle to the Tomo River, a journey time of approximately 4 hours. The journey takes the scenic route into the depths of the Colombian wilderness, and is a fantastic experience.
Transfer from Tomo to Akuani Floating Camp
Once you have arrived at the river, the boats will be waiting to transfer you the short 20 minute journey to the Akuani Floating Camp.

During your first two fishing days, you will get a taste of the fantastic fishing on offer on the Tomo River in Colombia. This famous waterway is home to an abundance of jungle species, including Peacock Bass, Payara, Pacu and a range of different Catfish, to mention just a few.
At the Akuani Floating Camp, it’s possible to fly or lure fish, depending on your preference. The waters around the camp are incredibly diverse, featuring a vast array of structures, white sand beaches, flats, tributaries, and numerous lagoons.

On your third and fourth fishing days, you’ll leave camp on one of the 14ft Lowe 1440 boats. Suzuki 30HP engines power these, and they come complete with portable coolers for storing lunch, drinks, and snacks.
These vessels are designed to accommodate two anglers and a native guide and are perfect for exploring the waterways deep in the Colombian jungle.

On your last two fishing days, if there’s a species of fish you haven’t caught but would like to, speak with your guides, and they will do their best to help you tick it off. These experienced bilingual native guides know the Tomo River inside and out and are dedicated to ensuring you get the most from each day on the water.

Transfer from the Akuani Floating Camp to Tomo
After breakfast you will be transferred by boat, the short journey back to Tomo. The boat journey is approximately 20 minutes.
Travel from Tomo to La Primavera
When you reach the shore and leave the boats, 4×4 vehicles will be waiting to drive you back to La Primavera, a journey time of approximately 4 hours. The journey takes the scenic route into the depths of the Colombian wilderness, and is a fantastic experience.
Once you arrive in La Primavera, you’ll catch a short flight back to Bogota. The flight time is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
