The mighty Lakselv River, home to the premium Olderø Lodge, is located in northern Norway’s Troms og Finnmark county. Flowing for over 100 kilometres, it starts its journey in Karasjok before running north through Porsanger, Finmark and the village of Lakselv before emptying into Porsangerfjorden, a fjord off of the Barents Sea. It has been a relatively unknown Salmon river for many years, certainly compared to other big rivers in the region, but in recent times it has been brought to the attention of travelling freshwater fly fishing anglers from all around the globe.
Despite being set in a region with a relatively low average water flow of only 26 m3, the river has been among Norway’s top rivers for its number of big Salmon captures over the last couple of seasons. The really big specimens in the river typically range between 40lb to 50lb, and the current record stands at a whopping 55lb. Despite being famed as a ‘big fish’ destination and river, the Lakselva produces good numbers of fish and catches a consistent eight tonnes of Salmon every year.
Olderø Lodge on the Lakselv is an authentic piece of fly fishing paradise in the land of the midnight sun. The stretch of water on the Lakselv River, which Olderø Lodge controls, consists of nine exceptionally well-managed beats, all of which get run on a well-prepared rotation schedule. All anglers follow this during their stay, meaning each area gets protected and rested at specific points during a typical fishing week. In addition, to limit pressure even further and ensure better fishing conditions, each beat is limited to two anglers; doing this also allows travelling rods the opportunity to fish all waters, providing a nice balance of variation in fishing marks.

The Olderø Lodge also offers travelling rods one of the most private fishing experiences as is possible on the Lakselv. They own some parts of the river and lease other parts from landowners annually, giving rods a much more significant privacy element than those fishing on public water.

The guides are constantly in tune with the rivers, and throughout the season, whatever the water conditions, they know when and where to find the fish. When it comes to wading, they always emphasise safety and will show you the river and the areas that are safe to wade and those that are not. There is nothing worse than losing a big fish because of difficulties landing it alone, so the guides are always on hand to help.
The freshwater fly fishing at Olderø is based on two anglers per guide. The guides will transport you to the river each day in new 4WD cars; they also provide tea, coffee, soft drinks and beer and will be at your service all day, with one goal of making your fishing more productive and enjoyable. Having a dedicated guide with you full-time will drastically improve your chances of success.
The Atlantic Salmon fishing at Olderø Lodge runs from the 15th of June until the end of August. During the first two weeks of September, all Salmon must get released, and 99% of the fish landed throughout the year are anyway. The fishes welfare is paramount, and like with many Salmon Lodges in Norway and Iceland, the disinfection of fishing tackle is essential. All the equipment needed to do this safely is available at the Lodge.
The Sea Trout season on the Lakselv runs from the same start date as the Salmon fishing in June but finishes on the 15th of September. During the last couple of weeks of the season at the start of September, all anglers fishing for the Sea Trout must adhere to the following tackle restrictions:
– Leaders must have a maximum diameter of 0.25 mm
– Single hook flies only, with a maximum of size 10
– Sink tips or sinking poly leaders are not allowed
– Weighted flies and lines are also not allowed
Despite the Salmon fishing season taking part during the summer months and with temperatures soaring to over 30°c degrees in July and August, it’s still possible to experience several extreme weather changes in a single day and heavy frosts at the start of the season aren’t unusual.
The weekly programme at Olderø Lodge runs from Sunday to Sunday. Once guests have been picked up from Lakselv, there’s food and drinks on arrival, and there’s also the opportunity to fish Home Pool for a couple of hours before dinner gets served at 9.00 pm.
A typical fishing day gets split into two parts, the morning session and the afternoon session. The morning session generally runs from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm, before you stop for lunch and a siesta. The afternoon session then runs from 4.00 pm to 8.30 pm before dinner at 9.00 pm. Before both breakfast and dinner, there’s the opportunity to fish Home Pool, unguided if you wish.
At Olderø Fly Fishing Lodge, there is a small intimate tackle shop where you can find all the equipment needed to fish the Lakselv effectively. So whether you’re looking for leaders, tippets, flies, hooks, rods, reels, clothing, and accessories, you will find them here, from many of the major manufacturers, including the likes of Rio, Sage and Patagonia.
A staff member from the Lodge is always on hand to help with any information on purchases, ensuring you’re buying exactly what will work and that you’re not filling your tackle box with items that won’t. The shop is very modern and accepts almost all credit and debit cards.
The Olderø Fly Fishing Lodge is located on Olderøen Island on the bank of the Lakselv river. It is only 100 meters from Home Pool, one of the best pools in all of Lakselv and the first holding pool of the river. The Lodge offers modern and stylish comfort in totally newly built facilities, with the main building wholly rebuilt in 2018.
The Lodge is not large by design but houses up to ten guests, making the place more private. The rooms and common areas are spacious, and you’ll have every modern luxury at your fingertips.
With incredible vistas, exclusive fly fishing on private waters on nine different beats of the river, free Wi-Fi, hot tub, drying room, luxurious lounge with restaurant, and fly shop, Olderø offers everything you need.
It features six single rooms, of which two of them are double rooms and all include a private bathroom with and shower.
The experienced ‘top-notch’ chefs prepare fresh food every day, all of which gets served by the Lodges friendly staff. Much of the food gets created by using many local ingredients from the Porsanger area, so when you visit, you will experience the fishing and the local food.
It’s typical to enjoy a daily breakfast buffet in the morning, lunch on the river and then a 2-3 course dinner in the evening in the restaurant.

I've been lucky enough to fish a few different fly fishing destinations and lodges around the world, but I can safely say that Olderø has to be up there as one of the best.
