Crocodile Bay Fishing Report June 2022

May was an exciting month at Crocodile Bay, both on and off the water. The big news in May is that Botánika Osa Peninsula, Curio Collection by Hilton has opened it’s doors on our property. Botánika is new accommodations for Crocodile Bay’s fishing guests. Fishing is the heart and soul of Crocodile Bay, and we continue to be the premier fishing destination in Costa Rica, offering our guests new top-notch accommodations and amenities provided by Botánika.

The fishing department has also had a few changes in May We are in the process of re-powering our 33” Strike tower boats with brand new caterpillar diesel motors, brand new paint, as well as new electronics, cushioning and tackle. We are really trying to keep up to date with all the newest gadgets to help us improve our fishing to another level. We are also re-powering our 24”-25” Boston whaler boats with brand new 200hp Suzuki outboard motors, brand new paint, and new cushioning. These boats are outfitted to excel both inshore or offshore. You can definitely get to the fish in a shorter period of time, cruising at 30 knots.

The month of May held no surprises for our anglers as the transition from dry season to green season has hostorically brought very good fishing. The better fishing is the result of the different water temperature, the good currents and all the natural debris that comes out of the rivers such as logs and branches, where the fish love to hang out. It is hands down my personal favorite time to fish. May was phenomenal for marlin, as our fleet raised more than 40 blue marlin landing a few on the fly and conventional tackle.

Every year around this time the yellowfin tuna seem to be coming closer to shore and this month was no exception. We have had reports from our captains running into huge schools of porpoise running with some really nice size tuna as close as 7 miles from shore. As we know tuna meat is one of the best fish you can have, and we are glad to have our chef work his magic and prepare it any way you would like. From sea direct to the table – it doesn’t get any fresher than that. We have also been hooking up with dorado and a few wahoos this month.

Inshore was a little slow for roosterfish, but our anglers have been compensated with other species like the cubera snapper. Cubera snapper are such a big challenge to land which makes it one of my favorite species to fish for. Once you have them on the line you have just a few seconds to start working the fish before it takes you into the rocks and then its game over! Guests are also catching Colorado snapper.

A cool fact about the Colorado snapper is that the current IGFA record was caught here at Crocodile Bay a few years back and this month they made a strong appearance.

Our guests are casting poppers, plugs and different types of artificial lures, which is always fun while drifting live baits from off the stern, providing higher chances on catching fish.

The month of June is always prime time for tuna, but seeing all of the action our clients had at the end of May, I can tell June is going to be a great month for landing different species. So come on down to Crocodile Bay and lets make music with our reels. Don’t forget to bring your best fishing shirt to take that unforgettable once in a lifetime picture with your bucket list fish. We will be more than happy to greet you with our doors and arms open to make you feel like you just made it to your home away from home. It will be an honor to be part of this once in a lifetime experience with you. I invite you to pack your bags and get away from your everyday life and let us share a little bit of this paradise we call home.
