Abaco Lodge sits on the west side of Great Abaco Island in the northern Bahamas, overlooking the world-famous Marls fishery, a 450-square-kilometre maze of flats, mangrove cays, and blue holes.
The Marls are home to huge populations of Bonefish, Permit, and juvenile Tarpon. The endless network of shallow flats and mangroves offers consistent action for anglers of all experience levels. It’s rebuild also has a special resilient history.
Destroyed by Hurricane Dorian in 2019 and delayed by the pandemic, Abaco Lodge has been beautifully rebuilt and reopened, a symbol of resilience and one of the Bahamas’ finest saltwater lodges.
Bonefish are the main draw, averaging 2lb to 4lb, with fish up to 8lb landed weekly. Anglers may also encounter Permit, juvenile Tarpon, Barracuda, Jacks, and various shark species.
Fishing days start after breakfast, with guests departing the dock at 8am and returning around 4pm for cocktail hour, followed by appetizers and dinner. Each pair of anglers fish with one guide from the lodge’s Maverick flats skiffs.
Abaco’s expert Bahamian guides are some of the most knowledgeable in the Bahamas and know every inch of the Marls. They operate high-performance Maverick skiffs equipped with padded seats, lean bars, and safety gear for comfort and precision on the flats.
The newly rebuilt lodge features seven double rooms with private bathrooms and air conditioning, plus a pool, fire pit, bar, fly shop, dining room, and fly-tying table overlooking the waterfront. Wi-Fi and good cellular connection are available.
The lodge serves fresh Bahamian cuisine focused on seafood, Conch, Grouper, and Lobster, along with homemade breads, pastries, and house wines such as Malbec and Chardonnay.
Non-fishing guests can enjoy snorkelling, diving, kayaking, or golf, while evenings bring cocktails by the pool or stories around the fire pit overlooking the bay.
The fishing season runs from October to June, with peak Bonefish action in April and May when conditions are warm and stable across the Bahamian flats.
