Akuani Floating Camp Colombia The Thrill Of Jungle Fishing

Customer Rating 100%

Peacock Bass & Payara Fishing Holiday - Akuani Floating Camp, Colombia

In the Colombian jungle, the Akuani Floating Camp offers anglers the rare chance to fish untouched waters deep inside the Orinoco basin. This mobile camp drifts along a network of rivers and lagoons that remain virtually unpressured, creating a fishery where explosive takes and wild battles are part of every day. Remote, pristine, and steeped in adventure, it is a destination for anglers who value both challenge and discovery.

The star of the show is the Peacock Bass, with Temensis reaching well beyond 20lb, renowned for savage topwater strikes and relentless fights. Alongside them, Payara—the “Vampire Fish”—attack with acrobatic violence, while Arowana, Pacu, and various Catfish species add variety. Fishing is primarily by boat, exploring channels, backwaters, and lagoons. Topwater lures and large streamers deliver heart-stopping surface takes, while jigs and subsurface tactics connect with fish holding deeper. The season follows falling water levels, when predators concentrate in accessible areas and action peaks.

The Akuani Camp itself is built on floating houseboats, moving with the fishing and providing comfortable cabins with private bathrooms, ceiling fans and shaded decks. Communal dining features Colombian dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, while evenings on the river offer sunsets, starlit skies, and the atmosphere of true wilderness.

For non-anglers, wildlife encounters are a highlight, with opportunities to see monkeys, caimans, giant river otters, and vibrant birdlife.

Akuani Floating Camp blends serious fishing with raw exploration. For anglers chasing trophy Peacock Bass and the adventure of the unknown, it stands as one of South America’s most exciting and rewarding holiday experiences.

"I have been fishing to Colombia since 2021 and I look forward to every adventure with their staff. Sure, the fishing is world class and the action is quite literally non-stop, but it’s the people who operate at the lodge that have left the biggest impact on me. The most hard working, genuine, and respectful people I’ve ever met at any fishing camp all over the world. They will do whatever it takes to get you the jungle fish of your dreams."

With access to two distinct ecosystems, every cast promises a memorable encounter in some of South America’s most biodiverse and unspoiled waters.

Fishing The Tomo River

When you take a trip to the Akuani Floating Camp, you’ll get to wet a line on the famous Tomo River in Colombia, a haven for anglers and home to a vast array of hard-fighting jungle species.

Nestled in the Vichada region, it’s incredibly diverse, with a limitless mass of structures, white sand beaches, flats, tributaries, and numerous lagoons. It provides the perfect setting for fly and lure fishing, as well as offering ample sight fishing opportunities for its predatory inhabitants. The Peacock Bass, of which there are several different strains, is the main species in the river and can often exceed 20lb, with a handful of fish landed each season pushing nearly 30lb. Along with these colourful jungle creatures, there are also opportunities to catch Payara, Pacu and a range of different Catfish, to mention just a few.

Fishing in the Tomo River is like embarking on a safari. While the water below is alive with life, above, it is equally impressive, as the region is home to over 500 species of birds, including Macaws, Toucans, and Kingfishers. It’s also common to encounter mammals like Tapirs, Capybaras, and the elusive Jaguar, while reptile enthusiasts might spot the Orinoco Caiman and the Green Anaconda.

This rich biodiversity enhances the adventure, making every moment spent fishing even more exhilarating.

Fish Species Of Colombia

The Tomo River, located in Colombia’s remote and biodiverse jungle, presents anglers with a truly unique opportunity to target a diverse range of exciting freshwater species. Here are just a few of the incredible fish you might encounter when casting a line in these rich waters:

Peacock Bass (Cichla Temensis)
Regarded as one of the most iconic sports fish in South America, the Peacock Bass is the largest cichlid in the world. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins, it’s well known for its aggressive strikes, vibrant colouration, and hard-fighting nature. These fish can grow up to 100 cm in length and weigh as much as 30 pounds, making them a thrilling challenge for any angler.

Payara (Hydrolycus Armatus)
Often called the ‘Vampire Fish’, the Payara is a fierce and fast predator, instantly recognisable by its long, dagger-like fangs. Found in fast-flowing waters and rocky river sections, this silver-bodied species can reach over 1 metre in length and exceed 30 pounds. Their explosive takes and powerful runs make them a standout target for adventurous anglers.

Black Pacu (Colossoma Macropomum)
Known for their impressive size and strength, Black Pacu are a fascinating species to catch. Often found in vegetated or structurally rich areas, they primarily feed on fruits, seeds, and plant matter. Their dark colouration and strong, deep-bodied shape make them a challenging yet rewarding catch—and an important species for maintaining ecological balance in the river systems.

Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus Hemioliopterus)
A true heavyweight of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Redtail Catfish is a powerful species known for its broad head, distinctive red-orange tail, and impressive size. These fish can grow to over 1.5 metres and weigh more than 170 pounds. Commonly found in deeper, slow-moving waters with sandy or muddy bottoms, they feed on fish, crustaceans, and plant material and are a favourite for those seeking a true jungle giant.

As well as these popular and more prominent species, it’s also possible to encounter Shovel Nose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum), Amazon Pellona (Pellona Castelnaeana), Arowana (Osteoglossum Bicirrhosum) and Matrinxa (Brycon Amazonicus), to mention just a few.
