Playa del Sol | Big Game Fishing | Baja | Mexico

Overview

Tour code: MEX001

Playa del Sol is the sister hotel to the world-famous Palma de Cortez and benefits from the main hotel facilities. The fishing here is done in the Sea of Cortez where you will be targeting many different species including the Jack Crevalle and Roosterfish on the inshore marks and the Marlin and Mahi Mahi offshore. You will have a choice of two types of boats, the smaller Panga’s which are perfect for the inshore fishing to the larger super cruisers which will travel the long distances offshore to target the Tuna, Marlin and other big game species.

Location
The Playa del Sol is located on the eastern side of the Baja peninsula which is located in Mexico. These luxury villas are in the town of Los Barriles which is home to some incredible big game fishing. When you stay in this hotel you have direct access to the Palma de Cortez fleet of quality sports fishing boats so you will never miss out on the action. With the floating dock, a couple of minutes walk you will be fishing on the fish-rich Sea of Cortez as the sun rises meaning there are no transfers to the fishing boats. The fleet of boats we use comprise of Super Deluxe Cruisers and the sporty Super Pangas and all come fitted with everything you would need to have the most enjoyable day afloat on these fish packed seas.

Fishing
At Playa del Sol you will have access to some of the world’s best big game fishing for such species as Marlin, which grow to phenomenal sizes. You could also hook into the fantastic Mahi-Mahi as well along with the lightning-fast Wahoo. Whilst fishing inshore you have the chance to target a wide array of beautiful species including the handsome Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle and Snapper. The offshore fishing is mainly done trolling lures and baits behind a boat waiting for a predator to rise from the depths and smash the hook making the rod double over and the reel scream as it tries to evade capture. The inshore fishing is done from smaller boats where you will be slow trolling bits or lures, looking for fish-holding areas like reefs and rises, these areas hold many different fish that will provide the visiting angler with some amazing sport including the very sort after Roosterfish.

Guides
When on the offshore boat you will have both a very experienced captain and a deckhand on the boat, they will help with everything you need from finding the fish to helping you land it once you have finished the fight. On the inshore boats you will have an experienced skipper who will be working hard to find you the fish and he will also aid you with everything you will need.

If you have any questions about any of the Mexico big game fishing holidays we offer then contact us in the office, our team will be happy to help you with any queries you have. Additionally, you can request a free brochure.

Accommodation
Playa del Sol

The Playa del Sol is a sister hotel to the world famous Palma de Cortez and is located in the heart of some of the worlds best big game fishing. The hotel offers stunning newly refurbished ocean and garden view rooms, that comprise of two twin beds, sofa area, private tiled walk-in shower room, desk with mirror and phone and also in most rooms you have your own balcony.

This tropical hotel is set amongst some amazing landscaped gardens, which are maintained to a very high standard and will fill your senses with exotic smells of fresh flowers. At the Playa del Sol guests can choose between two different rooms, the first is a room with garden view. These are charming little rooms with all of the amenities you would expect and are located near the swimming pool. The other option, which is the most popular, is the ocean view rooms. These also come well equipped, but benefit greatly of stunning ocean views. Questions & Answers

Where is the destination?

The Sea of Cortez is located off the East Cape of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Being located on the east side means you will be fishing the rich waters of the Gulf of California.

Where will I fish?

The inshore fishing along the coast is world class. The fishing starts as close as 2 miles out so there is no time wasted motoring out to the grounds. The deep drop off where the Billfish cruise is only short steam of around 10 minutes from the jetty.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

Both inshore and offshore grounds are all located very close to the hotel and you can be fishing within 10 minutes of leaving the jetty. However, if there are known shoals of Tuna that are feeding then somedays you may be travelling up to an hour to reach them.

What fish will I catch?

The offshore species will include Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna and Dorados which can all be targeted on the same day which is a major pull for the Sea of Cortez. The inshore fishing at Palma De Cortez is excellent and you can expect to catch Roosters, Jacks, Snappers and sometimes the Dorado come in very close to feed on the huge inshore bait balls. Along with all of the above, if you decide to fish the many reefs you will also catch many different types of snappers plus the very hard fighting Amber Jacks which grow to a very good size.

How many fish will I catch?

This all depends on the chosen species you wish to target, the weather and the time of year. If you are after catching a big billfish then to hook one a day would be an ideal expectation and anything over this would be classed as a bonus but you should get action from other species such as the Dorado and Tuna to keep you busy. The inshore fishing is always guaranteed to be a good day with lots of action from the Jacks and if you are lucky enough you will get to see a huge Rooster or two

How will I fish?

On your offshore fishing days, the boats will head off to the steep drop-offs where the predator’s patrol. You will be mainly trolling artificial lures and teasers, then once you have a Billfish in the spread the deckhand will pull the lure in so you can cast a bait to the Billfish. Seeing a Billfish strike at close quarters is an unreal experience.

The inshore fishing days will be mainly using fish as bait. These will be trolled behind the boat on outriggers, the deckhand will use live pilchards by the handful to excite the Roosters and Jacks and then once you have located the feeding fish the action should be pretty exciting and constant.

Do the guides speak English?

All the captains and deckhands speak good English. Sometimes hand signals are needed to explain things, we call it worldwide fishing language.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This destination is perfect for those who like a lot of action as the Sea of Cortez is packed with fish. You certainly do not need to be an expert big game angler as the deck hands will take great care of you. On the other hand, if you are an experienced big game angler you will also have lots of fun as the action can be fairly hectic on occasions when the Tuna are running or the Dorado are hungry.

What skill level is required?

This destination suits anglers of all abilities from first time big game anglers to the most experienced.

How physically demanding is this trip?

If you choose to troll then it’s not that physical because when you hook a fish you can sit in the fighting chair and let the boat do the work or you can stand toe to toe with the fish and battle it out. You can choose to lure fish if you so wish, which is fairly demanding, but not the normal technique for this part of Mexico.

When is the best time to go?

The season is from the end of April to November with May and September the best two months as this is when the Tuna and Dorado run. May sees a lot of good-sized Marlin and September is a great month to target many different species. Whenever you decide to travel then we highly recommend looking at a moon phase calendar. We would recommend the time leading up to a ‘new moon’ as the predators will feed more during the day than the night.

How do I get there?

We normally fly people via the US, such as places like Los Angeles or Dallas then a connecting flight to San Jose Del Cabo (SJD). Once you arrive we will then transfer you to the resort. Transfer normally takes around 40 minutes.

What is the accommodation like?

Playa del Sol was built with the angler in mind as it is located right on the beach. There are a couple of different options for rooms, there are poolside rooms or ocean view rooms. All the rooms are decorated in a Mexican style and have two twin beds, a shower room (some have baths), and normally an outside balcony where you can take a nice cold beer. There is a small gym on site along with tennis courts and a lovely spa area.

What is the food like?

The food at Palma De Cortez is very good, fresh and produced from local products. If there is something you fancy that isn’t on the menu then simply ask as the chefs and staff will try their hardest to make it happen. The breakfast is served early so it doesn’t get in the way of the fishing days and is an American style breakfast.

Does the hotel provide fishing tackle?

The tackle that is provided when out on the boats is of a good standard. If you fancy a little popper or jig fishing then we would recommend you taking your own equipment as they tend to concentrate more on trolling equipment. It is also possible to hire a small spinning rod to have a go from the beach in the evenings

Is internet and phone signal available?

Phone signal is available and the Wifi at the resort is free.

Are there other activities available?

Yes, they can organise shopping days out at Cabo, quad bike rentals and mountain bike rentals. Onsite there is a spa treatment area, gym and several tennis courts. There is also a swimming pool with swim-up bar plus a hot tub area.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.

Reviews

Jerry

The best part? it has to be the fishing. We all managed some huge fish and this being our first experience of big game fishing we are now hooked....... The accommodation was a little basic and when we return we shall stay in the main hotel or hire a villa. Perfect all round

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Jerry Mexico is the best place to spend your first big game experience as the fish are normally more than willing to take lures and you catch a good variety of species. Now you have done the small stuff, next stop is Costa Rica!

I will try and catch up with you sometime this week as would love to see all your pictures.

Denise

Hello Peter thank you so much to you and your team for helping us to organise this amazing holiday for a surprise for my fathers 50th birthday. He had an absolute time of his life as you will see from the photos we will send you. On his birthday the hotel arranged a surprise cake for him with sparklers and candles (was a very special night)

We all would highly recommend Playa del Sol in Mexico as it is a very reasonable priced holiday for what you get. The service was excellent and all the staff at the resort were very friendly.

We will be back again next year as its my husbands birthday and he would now like this as his birthday present!!! We will be in touch soon

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Denise we thought you would like the cake idea. Mel in the office contacted the resort to inform them of his birthday and asked them to organise a cake. Glad it all went so well for you guys and we would love to send you back next year.

I shall forward your very kind words on to the resort as they love to hear that their efforts are being liked.

Speak to you soon

Harry

Hello Sportquest, wow what a trip. We all managed to catch Marlin and the Rooster fishing was awesome. Boats were all clean and equipped with the correct tackle. May take my popper rod next time as was speaking to some American guys who had done very well on the poppers. Accommodation was good and just a little stroll to the restaurant.

Top marks Sportquest

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Harry I thought you might like it there as we discussed nothing huge but plenty of rod bending action for the whole family. I spoke to the fishing manager when you were there to make sure things were going well and was pleased to hear that you guys were catching and having fun. Looking forward to seeing the pictures and also please can we have the picture of you with that huge Rooster?

Speak to you soon, Paul

Brendan

We had a group of 8 anglers staying for six nights with 2 per boat. We spent a mixture of 3 days fishing offshore looking for billfish and 3 days closer to shore targeting the roosters

Fishing was better than the year before and the whole group had a very good time.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Was so nice to catch up with you all again on the phone, I have now spoken to everyone on the trip and it seems like they are all still buzzing.

Last year you did have a few days of rough weather but glad this year it was all plain sailing.

Most seem keen to return again, so I will await you to call us.

Talk soon Peter

Richard

A basic hotel but for us group of anglers it had everything we needed, which also means we are not paying for services that we would not need as we fished everyday.

Breakfast was on time and boats are waiting for us each morning. Some days we found more fish than others, but all the boats keeping in contact via radio is a big help as you are never to far away from all the action.

One day we came across a dead whale which was surrounded by fish, thats a day we will not forget in a hurry.

All the arrangements by SQ was perfect and a real pleasure to deal with.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Richard, that is a good review and I agree with you, its a great place to stay if you are just interested in the fishing, what else would you need.

I have fished there and had the same event with what was left of a dead whale, the smell was not good but it was surrounded with fish, the dorado fishing on the fly was unbelievable.

Talk again to you soon Peter

Jake

Our second visit to Playa de Sol and each time the fishing has never let us down. Good sport for Tuna, Dorado, Sailfish and we even had a couple of blues.

The breakfast is ready at 6am , anything you want you just ask for it . The beds are comfortable and the shower has hot water and great water pressure.

Not a lot else we could ask for really.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Jake it was good to have you all back,

Thanks for the feedback and images, will look at using some of them on a blog at some point.

say hi to your dad

Holiday at Las Palmas Hotel, Sea of Cortez. End of season Oct 2014
Although the fishing was a little patchy I did manage a 380lb Blue Marlin on my first day in a super panga and managed to loose 3 more on lures during our trip, we did catch a good variety of fish incuding several Roosters. I think we were spoiled when we fished earlier in the year and had upto 4 Stripped Marlin in a day.
The hotel survived the hurricane but appeared a little under staffed probabley due to cancelations from the USA.
The food at the hotel is not great but there are several very good cheap resterants a short walk from the hotel.
Plenty to do when not in a boat, hire a quad for the day for $100 ride the beach fly fish for Roosters or explore the hills offroad.
Flights well worth the £50-75 for extra leg room.

Stephen

Was great to hear back from you. I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you but I have also been away hosting groups.

Glad you both had some great fishing, congratulations on the Blue marlin thats a nice size for Mexico. Many people comment about the food, it seems if you are happy with standard food the resort does well, however if you prefer more upmarket food or more choice the local eating places offer more choice.

Thanks for passing on the tips to other customers about booking extra leg room and the quad bike hire.

I look forward in sorting out your next trip as normal soon.

Lastly thanks for your continued custom it is much appreciated.

Regards Peter

Steve

We all had an amazing week with lots of fish. We also did some offshore fishing and caught Permit and Sailfish. Highly recommended.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thanks Steve, glad you four all had a good time. Loved the pictures of the permit you all look well pleased. I look forward in arranging your next adventure.

Paul

I was completely blown away with the set up, accommodation, food and the fishing was just amazing. I wanted to fish with the fly but thought I might have to resort to spinning just to catch something. I needed not to worry the huge Dorado are so aggressive and just hammered my flies again and again. Each day I came back to the resort early, my arms could just not take any more.

Thanks for such a great trip and please pass on my thanks again to the guides who worked so hard.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Dr Whitean it was a pleasure to talk to you on the phone and thank you for travelling with us. we are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and it exceeded all of your expectations. We look forward in serving you again soon and I will certainly pass on all your kind remarks to the lodge and staff. Regards Peter

Rachel

Great place but way to busy for us. The staff at the reception desk were not very helpful but in their defence, they were understaffed as the reception was full of holiday makers just arriving and wanting their rooms

Apparently the fishing was very good and i am still being shown all the photos from my husband…. he loved it but may have to look at a quieter place for next year

Thanks Mel for helping us put this together and we will be calling you soon as its Paul's 50th Birthday next year and fancied Belize

Thanks, Rachel

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Rachel it can get busy in the school holidays as expected but you can normally find a quiet corner some where on the resort.

Its good that Paul had some good fishing as the week before they had some very bad storms

Looking forward to your call as i know you both would love Belize

Many Thanks

Mel
