This exclusive Sportquest-hosted trip ventures into the Canadian wilderness to the famous Fraser River on the country’s West Coast. It’s here where our BC Sturgeon fishing tour gets located, just a stone’s throw from the river and some of the best fishing.
Traditionally, when you think about fishing in Canada, your thoughts will naturally drift towards two things: fly fishing for Pacific Salmon and bait fishing for the Giant White Sturgeon. Our hosted BC Sturgeon fishing trip focuses on the latter and is based around battling with these enormous river dinosaurs that can grow to weigh over 1000lb. If they’ve always been a species on your bucket list and you’re a solo traveller, pair of friends or even a small group, our hosted trip is perfect for you.
All of the fishing is based on the famous Fraser River and it’s short but large tributary the Harrison River, with both waterways providing the last healthy wild stocks of this prehistoric species on the planet. Anglers travel from worldwide to wet a line on these renowned waterways to battle these beasts, among the largest freshwater fish found anywhere, known for their sheer size, strength and acrobatic fighting displays.
Our host will be with you throughout the trip, helping you with the fishing, tackle and techniques, as well as navigating all airports and transfers on your journey. The trip caters for seven rods and our host.
As a country, Canada is home to the world’s most significant proportion of freshwater lakes and has over 47 rivers of at least 600 kilometres in length – of which the mighty Fraser River is one.
The Fraser River rises at Fraser Pass in the Rocky Mountains and flows for over 1,300 kilometres into the Strait of Georgia just south of Vancouver. Named after Simon Fraser, who led an expedition in 1808, it’s the longest waterway in British Columbia and historically one of the most significant. It has served as both an essential source of sustenance and actual gold and while the gold rush has long since subsided, the fishing on the Fraser River has remained as epic as ever.
It’s a mighty and murky waterway with varying depths, from deep canyon sections to shallower, silty tidal flats.
The Harrison River is a short but large tributary of the Fraser, and despite only flowing for 18km, its biodiversity and importance as a fish habitat should not be overlooked. It flows southwest from Harrison Lake and joins the Fraser River in a scenic valley, in the southern portion of British Columbia, some 100km upriver from Vancouver. The confluence of the two rivers is a point of interest, and some say it’s a beautiful place to see the clear waters of the Harrison and the murky waters of the Fraser swirl together.
Compared to some parts of the Fraser, the Harrison is a shallow waterway, except for a deep channel that follows the original river bed for the entire course.
Both rivers are known for their first-class Sturgeon fishing and are famed among the angling community for their excellent fish populations and are considered by many as the premier destinations on the planet.
Thanks to the fantastic work of the non-profit Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society (FRSCS), the fish in the rivers have been allowed to thrive, and the rivers now offer the last healthy wild stocks of this prehistoric species on the planet. Our partners at BC Sportfishing Group work closely with the society to ensure these fish are protected and looked after – as you’d expect, all fishing is strictly catch and release, and all fish are tagged and recorded.

At our BC Sturgeon Fishing destination, the lodge has a fleet of over twenty boats which anglers fish from, ranging from 20 to 24ft in length, with all modern amenities, including full tops and heaters, for comfort and safety. Their range jet boats have stood the test of time and are the perfect vessels to fish from and for navigating the waters of the Fraser River. All tackle is supplied onboard with quality rods and reels from Shimano and end tackle from Gamakatsu, Power Pro, and Kodiak Swivels, to mention just a few.
The fishing style on the river is all based around ledgering from anchor and watching and waiting for one of the mighty residents to take an interest in your bait. Baits vary depending on the time of year but include Salmon, Roe (Chinook and Chum eggs can be most productive) and Pike Minnows. The latter is a popular choice because it’s considered an invasive, heavily impacting the Salmon species. As the trip is hosted and fully guided you don’t need to worry about what bait to use or when, as your guides and host will advise you and help you every step of the way, allowing you to concentrate purely on the fantastic fishing on offer.
Sturgeon are one of the largest freshwater fish in the world and can grow to over 10ft in length and half a tonne in weight. A gentle prehistoric giant, they have no teeth but harbour immense power and speed and can peel 200 yards of line off the spool in seconds. They are famed for their acrobatic fighting displays and can be compared to any big game sportfish, often referred to as the ‘Poor Mans Marlin’. Fights can vary from a few minutes to a few hours, and more often than not, the boats will up anchor and follow the fish around the river. Many of our customers who have fished for them are overwhelmed by their sheer size, power and aerial displays; when a big fish launches from the water, it’s a sight to behold and one of the most impressive visions in angling.
Note: We have worked with our suppliers and are now able to included your Sturgeon fishing licences as part of the package, meaning you haven’t got to worry about purchasing them on arrival.
This exclusive Sportquest Holidays trip is hosted by one of our experienced hosts and is ideal for solo anglers, pairs of friends and even small groups. Our team of hosts are hugely experienced as both hosts and fishing guides and are well travelled, taking trips of customers around the world and fishing in a wide array of different environments.
From tropical bluewater popper fishing in Panama and Costa Rica to picturesque deepwater Norwegian fjords to the rugged mountainous riverscapes of India. All have been fishing for their entire lives, and most have been hosting trips for us for over ten years, guiding hundreds of customers over this time, helping many land new PBs and tick items off their bucket lists. As well as being on hand to help with the fishing, they will be with you throughout the trip, helping you navigate the airports and transfers.
As well as our host, on this trip, you’ll be well looked after by the guides at the lodge, of which there are nearly twenty, who are passionate, experienced and knowledgeable. They take pride in their work and ensure every trip is a lasting memory, making this trip perfect for those looking to experience Sturgeon fishing for the first time and those well-travelled and already passionate about the species.

Each day on the way to new and exciting fishing spots, you will experience some of the most stunning scenery Canada has to offer, and you may even spot a bear or two.

This was my first fishing holiday abroad and it turned out to be an amazing experience from start to finish.
The scenery, guiding and fishing were fantastic, and Paul’s hosting was excellent.
I was lucky enough to catch a number of sturgeon over the course of the holiday including some of really good size and for me their power was exhilarating, almost scary.
Harrison Hot Springs is the perfect location, being a two minute walk from the shoreline and boat jetty.
I have to say this was a fantastic excursion that will live long in my memory.
Hi Andy, thank you so much for taking the time to send us your feedback from your recent Sturgeon Fishing Holiday and was a real pleasure to meet and fish with you.
And a huge well done for catching the largest Sturgeon of the week, it was a true monster and the video of it being released really showed the true size of it.
I totally agree with all your comments and hopefully we get to fish with each other again one day
All the best, Paul
From the booking process to the ending of the trip everything was so smooth and easy!
I upgraded my flights and also booked a single room to which the team were on hand to assist and help with! No question was too much and they were always happy to help! Sent pre flight information prior to travel to which made have good re assurance before the trip.
Everything from flights, transfers, hotel, guides, fishing license was so easy and simple and very stress free
The trip itself was great, the location and the fishing was brilliant but I defiantly have some unfinished business with some of the bigger fish! We all caught multiple fish with some big ones coming out also. The guides were great and couldn't do enough for you
The hotel was prime location, 150 yards to the boat, every evening we would go into the bar where the staff already knew our orders, a few strawberry daiquiris starting entering the picture after a beer or two along with some "duck farts" shots, we would chat about the day and have a great time before heading for dinner later in the evening. The location and views are beautiful and often when sitting in the boat or walking around town you are in awe of what is around you.
I managed fish to over 5 feet, but our boat had them to over 8 feet, around 350-400lbs which was amazing to see and everyone helped one another with encouragement and handling the fish once the prize was landed. The guides would talk you through what to do and always on hand to help when needed.
We used a variety of different baits each day, no day was the same in regards to some being slightly slower then others but that's fishing! The guides were always watching the water and constantly spotting fish and moving to new spots when they felt the time was right.
We had a great group on the trip, I was a bit hesitant before hand but we all got on so well. We had Paul on our trip who was great, knowledge of fishing is amazing with some pretty cool stories, just can't handle his drink ;) haha
We made good use of the bar and hot springs facilities in the evenings and had lots of banter flying around and some sore heads on some mornings. Breakfast in the hotel each morning was good and lunch on the boat was massive, always a good selection and no one ever went hungry.
We had amazing weather with only one day of rain, but go prepared! The mornings can be cold but the afternoons can be t-shirt weather. Always take a bag on the boat with some waterproofs and be ready to chop and change!
All in all I had a great trip and am looking at going back next year to try and land a bigger monster!
I would recommend sportquest to anyone and am planning to join the trip next year again
Hi George, thank you so much for taking them time to send us your feedback from your recent travels to Canada.
The shots and cocktails were excellent and enjoyed every night apart from the hangovers!! But we wont mention those as I was working....... and lets not forget the amazing food we tried
Really a pleasure to meet you and hopefully I will get you your big one next year. Just let me know when you have arranged the add on part as I have your space on hold.
All the best, Paul
the trip was as usual great my first time fishing in Canada; fishing Sturgeon . We were met by representatives at the airport all & driven to hotel all smooth & trouble free. hotel was basic but more than adequate with Bar ,Restaurant, Pool, gym ect. Rooms spacious & clean all you need when you are fishing.Next morning we were met at door of hotel by our guide (Doug Elias ) who was there on time as he was every morning . I would ask that S/Quest send our thanks & appreciation to BC sports both Doug & the office staff were the most polite & helpful people you could want to meet.Doug in particular kept the cleanest & most professional boat I have ever fished from , his knowledge ,patience & attention to detail ( getting the right baits, moving far down river to explore new grounds ect. ) made the trip truly memorable & SUCCESSFUL. we had 50 fish between myself Warwick topped by Warwick's capture of a 7 foot + beast estimated at 170 lbs unfortunately it was not brought into the boat & we had no pictures of the fish just the fight . But we had enough 3,4 & 5 foot fish to test our tackle & strength. It was a great holiday thank you all .
Hi Peter, can I start by thanking you for your feedback. It truly is an amazing place with some of the best guides I have fished with. They are very polite and work very hard to ensure you have the best trip. We have passed on your feedback to the owners and they have thanked you for the flowers you had left them.
All the best and until next time, Paul
