Duck Shooting | Jacana Lodge | Argentina

Overview

Tour code: ARG114

This is one of the country’s best-kept secrets and one of the best Duck hunting experiences Sportquest offer. The Argentine Duck shooting season runs from the beginning of May until late July, a time of year often overlooked by the northern hemisphere visitors. Jacana Lodge is the place to be with its outstanding number of Ducks, more than you’ll find at any one lodge in North America. Populations are so prolific due to several contributing factors including proximity to migratory routes, exceptional habitat and limited pressures on recourses. Within the Lincoln area where the lodge is based, increased rainfall over the past fifteen years along with an extensive grain production have created ideal waterfowl conditions by providing vast amounts of marshes, ponds, lakes and potholes allowing superior feeding and roosting nearby.

Location

Located in Lincoln, in the province of Buenos Aires, 300 Kilometers (185 miles) from Buenos Aires city, driving time 4 ½ hours, over good roads and through the beautiful rural country is Jacana Lodge. This hunting lodge was built specifically for hunters and is located on a regional working estancia, the lodge is terrific, and we are very proud of it. It is a comfortable, stylish base of operations and a place to tell your friends about that snappy double you made on teal earlier in the day.

Shooting

Shooting is made up of shooting Ducks over decoys in both morning and afternoon shoots in the ponds, slews and canals surrounding the home estancia and the agricultural tracts in western Buenos Aires Province. You will be shooting from both dry “bucket blinds” as well as pit and platform blinds depending on the topography of that day’s shoot. While the blinds are dry, getting to them requires that shooters bring waders which also help with wind and weather protection in the Argentine winter.

As is traditional in Argentina, hunters will depart the lodge pre-dawn after a hearty breakfast and will be situated and ready to shoot as the morning light develops and the mist lifts. After the morning shoot and bird collection, shooters are transferred back to the lodge to clean-up and enjoy a traditional gala Argentine lunch followed by a much-needed siesta. In mid-afternoon shooters will again deploy to the field into new blinds and fresh areas for an evening shoot that continues until last light. Exhausted but happy, shooters will then return to cocktails, appetisers and an all-out Argentine dinner accompanied by handpicked wines from the Mendoza region.

Please note: there is a self-imposed shell limit at this lodge, to protect the future of shooting as follows: The limit is 5 boxes of cartridges for the morning shoot and 3 for the afternoon shoot (25 cartridges in a box), meaning that a really accurate shot has the opportunity of shooting up to 200 Duck per day in a landscape teeming with wildfowl of every description.

Species

There are 13 common Duck species in this area of Argentina, which is an area called the central lowlands, or wet pampas. In order of abundance, you should see these Ducks as they are listed below. Most all whistle, except for the Pochard which purrs, or burrs like the Canvasback. The full species includes Speckled Teal, Yellow Billed Pintail, Rosey-Billed Pochard, White-Faced Whistling Duck, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Silver Teal, Red Shoveler, Southern Wigeon, Cinnamon Teal, White Cheeked Pintail, Black-headed Duck, Ringed Teal and the Brazilian Duck or Teal. For more in-depth information on Argentina Duck hunting adventures along with our other Argentina hunting trips, including Dove shooting and Perdiz shooting, please contact us today. Make sure to enquire early as due to receiving a large volume of requests, these spaces go quick.

Food and Drink

The kitchens come to life through the use of fresh and regionally representative meats and produce. By combining these elements, they create delicious flavours and varied textures that bring hidden stories and package traditions on each plate.

A top-notch team of experienced national and international chefs, trained in both classic and avant-garde culinary techniques, prepare your food. With an artisan’s touch, chefs prepare every dish by scratch to be served at a minute’s notice.

Days start with a hearty breakfast that includes a variety of homemade bread, jam, meadow honey, fresh fruit, natural yoghurts, and cereals. This game is prepared and presented during midday barbecues (asados), following appetisers such as grilled duck. The evening meal is a celebration of fine dining in a casual setting, and it is a chance for our house chefs to really shine.

Again, options are a la carte, so if you are enjoying our famous beef and wish to enjoy a steak each evening, we’ll happily grill one to order. If you dare be a bit more adventurous and wish to try Risotto with calamari ink, or grilled trout with tomato puree, then we’d encourage you to sample our speciality dishes.

Finally, there are the desserts. Each day brings a new creation, from flan to our local delight, dulce de leche, plus fruit, homemade ice creams, and pies.

Our lunch and dinner menus are paired with some of Argentina’s—and the world’s—best wines, from Bodega Catena Zapata. We celebrate our Argentine heritage with a wine partnership that brings truly world-class wines to our lodges.

Wines

We feel that the food we present and the wines we serve should mirror the sporting opportunities we offer—and be the very best available. Boasting many accolades from the wine community at large, a Bodega Catena Zapata wine recently received a “number four in the world” icon ranking from Wine Advocate.

These are truly great wines that compete on the world stage and in addition to enjoying your sporting holiday and our excellent menus, we hope you will also take note of our wines. They hold a special place in our culture and we are proud to serve them to you.

You will be taken to your own dry blind, or sunken “buckets” which are in the style of an individual pit blind or a pallet blind. Shooting over decoys will start at first light and will continue until 10:00am or thereafter. Who is best suited to this destination?

A keen and well-seasoned wing shooter would appreciate this destination due to the opportunity for a selection of challenging birds. However, at the same time it would be an ideal place for the beginner and intermediate gun to try his hand at plentiful well-presented wildfowl.

What skill level is required?

Both experienced and beginner wing shooters can fully appreciate the delights of this trip. With the angles and trajectory and superior testing birds for the more well-seasoned gun, down to the countless opportunities to the improve their skill on the copious amounts of low incoming quarry for the less experienced.

This is a fairly low key affair with regards to the amount of walking and lugging equipment about. However, be prepared to be shooting a fair amount of shells through your gun during the days sport as this can in itself be very punishing on the shoulder by the end of the day.

Thank you so much for having Sam and I at the Jacana Lodge.

We both had a wonderful time.

I thought for a long time about the question you had about what improvements you should make. I don’t think you should change anything. Your attention to detail and no confusion about how things are run made the whole experience a great time.

We will never forget our hunt with you at Jacana.

Again thank you so much.

My NEW life goal is to return to Jacana

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Karl it was a pleasure to have you both at the lodge, thank you for taking the time to write a few kind words, very much appreciated.

Michel

We thought the lodge was great, food excellent, great rooms and even the shell allowance found the correct balance.

Bird boys were without fault and very professional, I was impressed with the variety of locations and the quality of sport offered and the organisation was seamless, full marks to Charlie for getting us up every morning, I couldn’t do that all season.

I have already told my shooting friends about the trip, their most important question was ‘Would you go back’? The answer was YES

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thats a fantastic report and review and glad that you would come back as that says a lot.
