This is one of the country’s best-kept secrets and one of the best Duck hunting experiences Sportquest offer. The Argentine Duck shooting season runs from the beginning of May until late July, a time of year often overlooked by the northern hemisphere visitors. Jacana Lodge is the place to be with its outstanding number of Ducks, more than you’ll find at any one lodge in North America. Populations are so prolific due to several contributing factors including proximity to migratory routes, exceptional habitat and limited pressures on recourses. Within the Lincoln area where the lodge is based, increased rainfall over the past fifteen years along with an extensive grain production have created ideal waterfowl conditions by providing vast amounts of marshes, ponds, lakes and potholes allowing superior feeding and roosting nearby.
Location
Located in Lincoln, in the province of Buenos Aires, 300 Kilometers (185 miles) from Buenos Aires city, driving time 4 ½ hours, over good roads and through the beautiful rural country is Jacana Lodge. This hunting lodge was built specifically for hunters and is located on a regional working estancia, the lodge is terrific, and we are very proud of it. It is a comfortable, stylish base of operations and a place to tell your friends about that snappy double you made on teal earlier in the day.
Shooting
Shooting is made up of shooting Ducks over decoys in both morning and afternoon shoots in the ponds, slews and canals surrounding the home estancia and the agricultural tracts in western Buenos Aires Province. You will be shooting from both dry “bucket blinds” as well as pit and platform blinds depending on the topography of that day’s shoot. While the blinds are dry, getting to them requires that shooters bring waders which also help with wind and weather protection in the Argentine winter.
As is traditional in Argentina, hunters will depart the lodge pre-dawn after a hearty breakfast and will be situated and ready to shoot as the morning light develops and the mist lifts. After the morning shoot and bird collection, shooters are transferred back to the lodge to clean-up and enjoy a traditional gala Argentine lunch followed by a much-needed siesta. In mid-afternoon shooters will again deploy to the field into new blinds and fresh areas for an evening shoot that continues until last light. Exhausted but happy, shooters will then return to cocktails, appetisers and an all-out Argentine dinner accompanied by handpicked wines from the Mendoza region.
Please note: there is a self-imposed shell limit at this lodge, to protect the future of shooting as follows: The limit is 5 boxes of cartridges for the morning shoot and 3 for the afternoon shoot (25 cartridges in a box), meaning that a really accurate shot has the opportunity of shooting up to 200 Duck per day in a landscape teeming with wildfowl of every description.
