The Kau Tapen Lodge on the Rio Grande does not need any introduction due to its reputation for Sea Trout fishing. Each week you will have a very good chance of catching a fish over 20lbs. There is very little human habitation in this part of the world, which means the fishing is very reliable.
Kau Tapen is located in the heart of the Rio Grande, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. This was the first fishing lodge established on the Rio Grande and hold 5 world records for Sea Trout up to 35lb. Due to access control and catch-and-release regulations, the Rio Grande is one of the most productive sea-run Brown Trout fishery in the world.
Conditions on the Rio Grande are windy, which can be a shock for some UK anglers. However, do not let this put you off as the annoyance of the wind is outweighed by the large sea-run Brown Trout the Rio Grande has to offer. At times, the wind is a blessing in disguise as it produces strong ripples on the surface which gives Trout security and because of this, anglers are able to catch many Trout during the day rather than just at night.
Using a double-handed rod with a roll cast will allow you to take advantage of the wind. A stiff single-handed rod is more appropriate for calmer periods.
The massive Rio Grande has many undercut banks where large browns love to reside. These Brown Trout have an average size of 12-20lb however this destination has the opportunity to produce larger species. The Rio Grande is a place where catching a trophy-sized Trout is a big possibility.
At the Kau Tapen Lodge, the fishing schedule is divided up between 4.5 hour morning and evening sessions. You will have access to 18 miles of banks on the Rio Grande with 60-70 pools. On top of this, the guides will be on hand to help you with your success. They will ensure you are on the right spots and assist you with approaching each pool.
