Kau Tapen Lodge | Sea Trout Fishing | Argentina

Overview

Tour code: ARG008

Kau Tapen Lodge is steeped in years of Trout history dating back to 1984. The lodge was one of the first lodges on the Rio Grande water system. Kau Tapen translates to ‘House of Fishing’ in the local language and over the years it certainly has lived up to its name. Hundreds of guests class this stunning lodge as their fishing home and along with the excellent service by all the staff this could well be your next fishing home.

Location

Kau Tapen can be found nestled in the Rio Grande Valley Argentina. This amazing river system flows from west to east and comes down from the Andes and flows into the Atlantic Ocean through 60 miles of Argentine territory. The rugged landscape of Tierra del Fuego is like something more found in the lowlands of Scotland with them being very stark but still remaining stunning on the eye. The population in this area is very sparse but you will come across many sheep farming estancias, large herds of Llama like Guanacos and a large population of Condors will soar above while you peacefully go about your business. Visit our YouTube Channel to see for yourself how incredible the fishing is in Argentina.

Fishing

Having access to over 13 miles of the middle section of the river gives its guests easy wading opportunities on both banks. Access on these rivers is everything and with well-maintained vehicles, anglers will get to spend more time fishing with only on average a 15-minute drive to some of the furthest away beats, you will get to experience a great variety of styles.

Each day guests can expect to fish around 9 hours split into two sessions, there is the morning session taking you up to midday then there will the late afternoon session fishing into the dark. The reason the fishing is split like this is to avoid the midday sun and take advantage of the most productive feeding times. In the morning session, after a good hearty breakfast, you will depart around 9 am fishing up to midday where you will then return back to the lodge for lunch, drinks and an afternoon siesta. Late in the afternoon, you will be taken back out and then you will fish into the dark hours taking full advantage of the more productive feeding spells.

Sea Trout can be very moody fish and may only take a fly that is presented in a way that they prefer on any given day and with the river be substantially large lots of different techniques will have to be used to tempt some of these tricky Sea Trout. Some Sea Trout may require your fly to be on the bottom then the very next swing through they may only take it off the top so an ability to read the conditions is a must-have skill for a more productive day. Vary your presentation in each pool until you find the winning method but do not get complacent as these fish are tricky and will soon wise up to any given method.

The Sea Trout on the Rio Grande tend to spend most of their time near cut banks during the middle of the day but in lower water, they will also lie in the faster necks of the pools. They tend to move into these areas during the early morning, evening and night time and a good rule of thumb are ‘Tails in the morning and heads at night’. On overcast calm days look for Sea trout in the pools, on sunnier days a theory that a lot of anglers swear by is that the Sea Trout do not like sun directly in their eyes but this can always be affected by the amount of taking fish in any pool so again, approaching pools with an open mind is always needed as situations always change and you will need to change with them for a more successful trip.

Guides

All the guides at Kau Tapen are first-class professional guides from Argentina and other international locations. Each guide has their own unique approach to the fishing and guiding on a rotational basis you will get to benefit from each individual guides knowledge. They will be equipped with nets and will assist guests with weighing and releasing their catches. All the guides at Kau Tapen are available for casting instructions for both single and double-handed casting.

Questions & Answers

WHERE IS THE LODGE?

Kau Tapen can be found nestled in the Rio Grande Valley Argentina. This amazing river system flows from west to east and comes down from the Andes and flows into the Atlantic Ocean through 60 miles of Argentine territory.

WHERE WILL I FISH?

Having access to over 13 miles of the middle section of the Rio Grande River gives its guests easy wading opportunities on both banks.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH THE FISHING GROUNDS?

Access on these rivers is everything and with well-maintained vehicles, anglers will get to spend more time fishing with only on average a 15-minute drive to some of the furthest away beats, you will get to experience a great variety of styles.

WHAT SPECIES WILL I CATCH?

The main species are the Sea Trout as the waters around Kau Tapen are teeming with big fresh run Sea Trout ranging from 5lb to 20lb. The other species you will find are Brown Trout, these are smaller and normally fairly widespread in the system.

HOW WILL I FISH?

Double handed spey casting is the norm on this wide river. Fishing to the far side close as you can, or fishing in deep pockets, or shallow riffles are all the types of fishing scenarios you will encounter while swinging flies.

DO THE GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH?

All our guides speak many different languages including English. The guides are handpicked from local to international guides all have their very own unique ways of approaching the river system.

WHAT SKILL LEVEL IS REQUIRED?

Swinging flies on such a big river takes a fair amount of skill. It’s not just the casting that is important for a successful trip, it’s having the knowledge to be able to read a river and where most likely fish would be lying. Another skill level needed is the way you approach the river and where you start fishing, all these combined will see you in good seed for a better experience. But remember that the guides have vast amounts of knowledge so never be embarrassed to ask them for their advice.

HOW PHYSICALLY DEMANDING IS THIS TRIP?

As you will be taken to each pool by 4X4 trucks there is a little walking. The wading is relatively easy wading as it is all on small shingle and shallow waters. There will be some amount of walking daily but not miles upon miles.

HOW WILL I GET THERE?

Fly from the UK to Buenos Aires. On arrival many customers overnight in Buenos Aires. Then the following morning it’s just a short flight to Rio Grande and from there a short 30 min ride to the lodge

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

The lodge features ten comfortable rooms, smart furnishings, and spacious and gracious living areas. Delicious meals are prepared daily by the lodge’s dedicated chef. Each evening a roaring fire and well-stocked bar welcome you back from your day’s adventures. Our on-site tackle shop is stocked with Sage rods, quality reels, flies, lines, clothing, and other on and off water gifts and essentials.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

At Kau Tapen, the kitchens come to life through the use of fresh and regionally representative meats and produce. By combining these elements, they create delicious flavours and varied textures that harbour hidden stories and package traditions on each plate. A top-notch team of experienced national and international chefs, trained in both classic and avant-garde culinary techniques, execute the food. With an artisan’s touch, chefs prepare every dish from scratch to be served at a minute’s notice.

DOES THE LODGE PROVIDE FISHING TACKLE?

The lodge has a selection of quality rod and reel outfits available to guests for a weekly rental (to be booked in advance). There is a small fly shop in the lodge that carries a good selection of productive flies, leaders, tippet, fly lines, wading jackets and Patagonia down jackets.

IS INTERNET AND PHONE SIGNAL AVAILABLE?

There is no mobile phone reception at the lodge. However, the lodge has free WiFi so customers can stay in touch with home either by messages or even to chat via mobile apps.

ARE THERE OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE?

For either non-anglers or anglers who do not wish to fish every session, there are long walks around the thousands of acres of the Estancia with stunning barren scenery and wildlife. The lodge has a Finnish steam bath, sauna, and full spa for the ultimate day of relaxation.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel arrangements we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.

Lance

For us as we have now visited a few time Kau Tapen is our second home. Everyone makes us feel so welcome its hard not to feel like we all belong there.

The Rio Grande is an amazing river to fish, it can have some moody days and sometimes the fish can be hard. It is the challenge of the fishing that makes it so interesting.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Lance, thank you for taking the time to complete our destination review. I agree the river is an amazing place to fish.

Tarquin

What a place and what a river. We would urge anyone who likes their fly fishing to visit Kau Tapen.

Our trip was first class and one that should be repeated each day.

Next time we would take a bit more time to relax in BA on the way out as the flights are long.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Tarquin, we would agree with you plus BA is a nice city to spend some time with some great restaurants. However we also realise for some people time is an issue and they wish to fly out to the destination as quick as possible. Thats one advantage that we offer as we do tailor all itineraries to suit each customers requirements.

William

An exeptional holiday and destination.

One has travelled to many places, but some stand out above the rest. Kay Tapen will go down in our minds as one such destination.

A big thank you from both me and our team.

Tight Lines

Mr Lindsay

All aspects of my Kau Tapen experience were excellent. Just spending time by a river like Rio Grande with true fly fishing enthusiasts like the guides I had the pleasure to meet.... and if you then add the monster trout and the atmosphere of the "House of fishing" I could not get closer to my fly fishing heaven.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thank you so so much for travelling with us and taking the time to complete your customer feedback. Great comments that we will pass on to everyone.

Regards Mel

Bayaraa
