Kau Tapen Lodge is steeped in years of Trout history dating back to 1984. The lodge was one of the first lodges on the Rio Grande water system. Kau Tapen translates to ‘House of Fishing’ in the local language and over the years it certainly has lived up to its name. Hundreds of guests class this stunning lodge as their fishing home and along with the excellent service by all the staff this could well be your next fishing home.
Kau Tapen can be found nestled in the Rio Grande Valley Argentina. This amazing river system flows from west to east and comes down from the Andes and flows into the Atlantic Ocean through 60 miles of Argentine territory. The rugged landscape of Tierra del Fuego is like something more found in the lowlands of Scotland with them being very stark but still remaining stunning on the eye. The population in this area is very sparse but you will come across many sheep farming estancias, large herds of Llama like Guanacos and a large population of Condors will soar above while you peacefully go about your business. Visit our YouTube Channel to see for yourself how incredible the fishing is in Argentina.
Having access to over 13 miles of the middle section of the river gives its guests easy wading opportunities on both banks. Access on these rivers is everything and with well-maintained vehicles, anglers will get to spend more time fishing with only on average a 15-minute drive to some of the furthest away beats, you will get to experience a great variety of styles.
Each day guests can expect to fish around 9 hours split into two sessions, there is the morning session taking you up to midday then there will the late afternoon session fishing into the dark. The reason the fishing is split like this is to avoid the midday sun and take advantage of the most productive feeding times. In the morning session, after a good hearty breakfast, you will depart around 9 am fishing up to midday where you will then return back to the lodge for lunch, drinks and an afternoon siesta. Late in the afternoon, you will be taken back out and then you will fish into the dark hours taking full advantage of the more productive feeding spells.
Sea Trout can be very moody fish and may only take a fly that is presented in a way that they prefer on any given day and with the river be substantially large lots of different techniques will have to be used to tempt some of these tricky Sea Trout. Some Sea Trout may require your fly to be on the bottom then the very next swing through they may only take it off the top so an ability to read the conditions is a must-have skill for a more productive day. Vary your presentation in each pool until you find the winning method but do not get complacent as these fish are tricky and will soon wise up to any given method.
The Sea Trout on the Rio Grande tend to spend most of their time near cut banks during the middle of the day but in lower water, they will also lie in the faster necks of the pools. They tend to move into these areas during the early morning, evening and night time and a good rule of thumb are ‘Tails in the morning and heads at night’. On overcast calm days look for Sea trout in the pools, on sunnier days a theory that a lot of anglers swear by is that the Sea Trout do not like sun directly in their eyes but this can always be affected by the amount of taking fish in any pool so again, approaching pools with an open mind is always needed as situations always change and you will need to change with them for a more successful trip.
