Welcome to Vesterålen, located in the north of Norway, surrounded by some of the most stunning landscapes found anywhere in the country. Known locally as the ‘Kingdom of the Whales’, it is home to a vast population of different Whales species. This gorgeous Island is north of the world-famous Lofoten Islands and the Arctic Circle. The archipelago reaches out westwards from the mainland of Norway and into the Atlantic Ocean.
Due to the popularity of our other Norway sea fishing destinations on the Lofoten Islands, we came to research Vesterålen to bring you an exciting new destination offering the same level of world-class fishing opportunities. Classed as almost weatherproof due to its location and the two massive fjords of Jörnfjorden and Eidsfjorden on its doorstep, it’s ideal for those anglers who perhaps maybe suffer from sea sickness and who don’t want to take chances on potentially losing fishing days. It’s also perfect for those travelling anglers looking for a genuinely mixed week of fishing; as a sea angling destination, it offers almost everything Norway is famous for – giant Cod, Halibut and Coalfish, Ling, Redfish, Plaice and Wolffish.
The camp has a minimum of two guides on it at all times, meaning that you will always have a guide on site who can offer advice on where to fish and what tactics to use.
The destination of Vesterålen in Norway found on the Eidsfjorden, a long deep fjord with depths as deep as 200mtrs and has many plateaus, peaks, and structures that will hold big Cod and Coalfish all year round. The are has proved to be an excellent area for Redfish and huge Ling. There are some tremendous sandy plateaus on the Vesteralen Norway fishing trip close to the land on the sides of this fjord, which will offer fantastic Halibut fishing along with Plaice and Dabs.
The main attraction to Vesterålen will be the species fishing you will find on offer; it is one of the best places for a wide variety of species as the pressure on these fish is very low, so the stocks of fish keep getting better and bigger.
If you continue a short distance to the west or south-west, you will find yourself in the open ocean, where there are many more peaks, channels and plateaus. The population of big Cod, Coalfish and Halibut are plentiful in this area. It’s not just the great fishing in this area that has caught our attention, its the accommodation on offer. It is of a very high standard for Norway, and we have made sure that the cabins are complete with lots of modern amenities to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as it could be.
You will be fishing the North sea, and these waters are rich with life and nutrients, which makes for some incredible fishing at certain times of the year. In the cooler months, such as April and May, the Cod fishing around Vesteralen Norway fishing is excellent, and with the Skrei Cod coming close enough to reach with a short drive from this destination, it won’t be long before we see some outstanding results. As the waters warm up, the fishing changes and Halibut becomes the main fish to target. You can catch large Halibut in the fjords or the open sea; the choice will be yours.
Some of the best Halibut grounds are around 30 minutes to a 1-hour boat drive away. However, there are always colossal Halibut caught 5 minutes from the cabins. The further away spots tend to be known holding areas for big Ling, and much other fish are still worth a long journey.
The onsite guides at Vesteralen Norway fishing have found a fishing mark known locally as ‘Jurassic Park’ aptly named due to the sheer size of the fish available to catch. It’s not uncommon to see Cod over 50lb in the summer months. It’s not just the Cod that grow large; its the other species that are being caught each week, with Huge Ling, Coalfish and of course Halibut. This area is around a 1.5hr boat ride away from the lodge, but it is well worth a couple of days fishing in this area.
With our partners Nordic Sea Angling, we have managed to secure the same high standard boats as we run at many of our other camps. The boats that you will be using are known for excellent handling and safety at sea. They are very sturdy even in rough conditions and can cope with heavy seas. Why not head over to our Youtube channel to see what Vesteralen is like
The boats are 23.5ft Arronnet aluminium boats and come fitted with 150hp Suzuki 4 Stroke engines, one of the most fuel-efficient engines money can buy. The boats’ electronics are also a high standard, with prominent displays on the fish finders and chart plotters. These boats are kept to a very high standard and regularly maintained. We also have a spare boat just in case of unforeseen breakdowns. There is also a guided boat at Vesteralen Norway fishing, and if booked well in advance, you can have a full week’s guided fishing; alternatively, if you wish to be more flexible with your fishing, you can simply follow the guides around for the first couple of days.
Subject to availability, it is also possible to book the guide for just one day. If they are available, they will take you out on the guide boat and show you around some of their productive marks, along with their favourite fishing techniques, which is a massive help.
You will have two guides onsite at Vesteralen Norway fishing camp, with one being at the camp during the day whilst the other is out guiding on the boats. These guides will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and offer advice on any of the fishing you may need. If you have been looking for your next sea fishing adventure, then Vesterålen is the place for you as once you have fished here and stayed in the luxury cabins, we looked after our onsite guides and caught that dream fish, you will not want to go anywhere else.
As with many other parts of Norway, the seasons are pretty much similar. March & April will see the Skrei Cod’s arrival, then once you start to move from Spring to summer, the Halibut and Coalfish will become more active and more comfortable to find. A perfect time to fish Vesteralen is June, as this is when all the species will be available, especially the very large Ling that Vesteralen Norway fishing is famous for. If you still need more help deciding, we have written some useful blogs such as the ultimate guide to sea fishing.
The great advantage of Vesterålen is that there are always two full-time guides on hand to help the most or less experienced anglers. They will even jump on your boat for a day, guiding you and showing you all the hot spots. They are always on hand to help out with any questions about fishing marks and are still keen to help out as much as possible to ensure you have a great experience.
There is no skill level required for fishing as the guides will help you with everything. A little boat handling knowledge would be an advantage but not necessary as the guides will help with instructions. The boats located a minute walk away from the cabins down a reasonably steep bridge on to the dock. The rest of the holiday is certainly not physically demanding.
PLEASE NOTE our standard trips to Vesteralen utilises the Seacabin. However, we have listed all the accommodations below, as it’s possible to upgrade or pick the house that best suits your needs and group size. The corresponding pictures are of the Seacabins, while the other accommodation images can be found in the gallery.
The accommodation at Vesteralen is new for 2024 and now offers an array of lodges suitable for all different group sizes and the needs of each. All the cabins have TV, free WIFI, bed linen, towels and final cleaning gets included.
The restaurant is located in the hotel building and serves an array of tasty meals; it’s ideal for those anglers who want to avoid cooking and prefer full catering. At the restaurant, it’s also possible to order lunch packages if wanted. An excellent new 2024 offer is that breakfast is now included for all guests!
Other features at the camp include an onsite car that can be borrowed at any time for trips to the shop, filleting tables, a freezer room and a drying room, and an onsite tackle shop to buy or rent tackle.
The cabins are as follows:

Very good holiday to Vesteralen Norway again for the second year running, will be booking again next year. Have been happy with the service that sportsquest offer and would highly recommend them as a company.
Hi Kevin thank you for your kind words and so pleased you love the place so much.
You guys are all booked in for next year and what a trip that will be

Seeing a family of killer whales in the wild was awesome.
This was my sixth trip with Sportquest and this destination was by far the most scenic
Hello Clinton, So glad you got to experience those killer whales and it was great to fish with you once again. Vesterålen is a magical place with awesome scenery. I cant wait to get back there next year
All the best
Paul
Had a fantastic time in Norway. Hoping to go back next year!! Only thing is it helps if you have skipper experience, ie, using equipment, drifting but after a few days we were on top of it and caught some very nice fish. Thanks Sportquest
Hi Colin
Its great to hear you had a fantastic time and are hoping to go back.
We will give you a call soon

I have just returned from a week in Vesteralen. What a great getaway. The accomodation was excellent. Very roomy, spotless and with all mod cons. The boats were brilliant, very sea worthy, and comfortable fishing. The fishing was slow for the first couple of days then we had a guided trip to a mark Marcus the resort guide new about that could be reached in good weather. The weather god was kind to us and after a two hour trip we settled into what was undoubtedly the best days fishing any of us had ever had. For over six hours we had fish after fish, large Cod, large Coal-fish, large Ling, you never new what was going to come up next. Wow what a day. A Big thank you must be said to Marcus for providing us with not only maps and local knowledge, but nothing was a problem for him. If we needed any advice about anything he was there. A Great Guy. The views of the Fjords were spectacular The icing on the cake was watching the Sea Eagles diving down for fish as we headed back to our cabin each evening.
Hello Richard, thanks for your great feedback. It is a real help to future travellers.
So glad you guys had a great trip and liked Vesteralen. I am off there next June so hopefully we have the same great fishing you guys had. Where next for you guys?
Tight lines Paul
Great location with fantastic accommodation and 'away from it all' setting.
Good fishing grounds with some limitations in adverse weather - Huge potential in Calmer conditions for Halibut, Cod and Coalfish.
The guide Marcus is fantastic. Limited by being a one man operation on site.
Recommend Blackout blinds to improve lodges during 24 hour daylight.
Self catering welcome packs. Recommend a 'basket' of Bread, Eggs, Milk, Cheese etc.
Location/fishing grounds/guides. Please send in advance to allow initial planning for the trip. (Nordic do this)
As usual, Minor points as the overall package is very good.
Hi Matt, thanks for your feedback all the tips are very helpful for future travellers.
Sounds like you guys had a great time and caught plenty of big fish.
We do have lots of maps with fishing marks for people who require them. Perhaps we will start to send them out with the paper work. I shall suggest a welcome pack as it is sometimes very helpful especially if your flight arrives late in the day and the shops are closed so that would be a great idea
All the best
Paul
Plenty of cod/coalfish and ling a couple of personal bests
No Halibut unfortunately
Hi John
Thank you for the feedback
It sounds like you had plenty of fish but it's a shame no halibut showed for you.

Our group enjoyed a very memorable trip with excellent accommodation and a great guide called Marcus who could not have been more helpful and actually joined us for a couple of evening meals.
He gave us great information and tips on where to fish.
Your own service has also been outstanding and we all agree that we will be returning to Norway with Sportquest at some point in the future.
Hi William
Thank you for the great feedback, it sounds like you had an amazing time in Vesteralen.

Although the fishing was very good the travelling to the fishing grounds I thought was to long 4.5 hours one day when the sea was rough. Seeing killer whales to me was the highlight. Sometimes I just want to go fishing on a holiday at a respectable hour and not get up early in the morning to catch big fish and long distances
Hello David, Thank you for your feedback. Yes it was a tough weeks weather and those long distances would of been half the time if the sea was flat calm. But when we got out there the fishing was worth it with two Cod pushing 50lb and those ling made the journey worth it. Those Killer whales we saw were amazing and to have them so close to the boat was even more exciting.
All the best
Paul
Fishing was unbelievable better than I hoped for!
Scenery Beautiful and our guide Marcus was really helpful and pleasant.
Accommodation was very clean and comfortable.
Could not fault the holiday.
Hi Luke
Thank you for the great feedback

Another fantastic trip with Sportquest. Highlights definitely were:
The location and scenery
seeing orcas in their natural environment
the company - great set of anglers
oh...and a new Halibut PB!
Only improvement suggestion would be to install wardrobes / cupboards in the lodge bedrooms - we were literally living out of a suitcase
Hello Nick, it was great to see you again and really pleased you managed your Halibut PB. It was an awesome fish. What about the statue, you forget to mention the statue!!
Anyway, hopefully will see you again soon

It lived up to expectations as other trip have done before. All things been thought of

Vesteralen accommodation is very comfortable, clean and overlooks a peaceful setting.
Oscar the guide provided a great service and looked after us with advice and fishing information daily.

Amazing people, amazing fishing , amazing boats,
Just brilliant experience and can’t wait for our next adventure
Hi Jame, thank you so much for your feedback. Its very important to the Sportquest Staff and also the onsite guides to see if there is any improvements needed. And also thank you for your report on our Sea Fishing Holidays Facebook
Until next time, tight lines Paul
It's fair to say that it is a long journey. Once at Heathrow, aircraft to Oslo, another flight to Evenes then into the local Bo Taxi for a three hour Road Trip to Vesteralen Fishing Apartments/ lodge. Including the trip to Heathrow from Lincolnshire we had been on the road about nineteen hours.
On arrival at the fishing Lodge, we were greeted by Jogen and Alex the guides and shown to our very comfortable, warm and well equipped apartments overlooking the Fjord and the dock with the boats we were to be using for the next 5 days. Then followed a full briefing on the boats, safety equipment, refuelling and cleaning, we were then kitted out with anything we needing rods, reels, floatation suits and the like. With all of our group of 4 having good levels of boating experiance the boat handling didn't hold any concern for us, however we opted to nominate one person as skipper to save any confusion on the boat.
I won't go into a day by day blow by blow account of our fishing, suffice it to say that with the best advice from both Alex and Jogen on methods and lures, the next five days of fishing was an absolute blast. All four of us on the boat caught Halibut the largest for us was circa 65+lb. the tally being 8 to the boat with others lost. The Coalfish and Cod were exciting and numerous up to around 15lb with larger fish a the 25lb range. In all we caught Ling, Haddock, Cod, Coalfish, Halibut, and the odd Sh£$fish.
Individually, in our group of 4, we all fish, and have reasonable fishing experience, but went to Vesteralen with no preconceived ideas as to what to expect, other than what we had seen on TV (Mortimer and Whitehouse) and YouTube. As a fishing destination we all agree that Norway is a must do, and we will be doing it again next year with Sportquest.
A bit of advice.
Catering
Its self catering take food, packet soups are great for the flask during the day. Pasta, rice, bread, biscuits, food shopping in Norway is expensive. Norland pils is the best and cheapest beer, you won't be able to buy beer after 8pm in the local supermarket and you can not buy wine and spirts in the supermarket at all.
Tackle
Slim down you tackle box, I was certainly guilty of taking to much gear I didn't use. What I did use was, Westin Sandy Andy's 300gr 28cm, Shads 300gr, for Halibut, 150gr Perks for Cod, Coalfish & Wolfish, Small multiple sand eel rigs for bait fish, 8oz plum weights. The Kinetic Dragon 80gr perk in blue/silver was brilliant for coalfish. 130 and 80lb mono for leaders. Mustard quality, Swivels,Berkley McMahon Ball Bearing Cross-Lok Snap Swivels 175lb & Seadra Solid Ball Bearing Swivel #8 300lb, Hooks 3/0 & 5/0 circles and 1/0 & 1 trebles What's the best colour for shads and sandyandy's, the answer there isn't one IMHO! The camp has a well stocked tackle shop and the prices are comparable with UK
Listen to the guides, Alex and Jorgen have a wealth of knowledge to offer.
Hello Anthony, wow that is an excellent feedback and thank you so much and some very useful and helpful information in there for future travellers.
These feedback forms are very important to our staff and also the onsite guides to see if there are any improvements that we and them need to make.
Until next time, tight lines Paul
Catching my first Halibut was a memorable experience. The sheer power of the fish made for a great fight, it measured in at around 120cm/50lbs, not bad for the first Halibut !
Hosts Jorgen and Alex were very knowledgeable and helpful, they guided us to some good spots for Cod Coalfish, Haddock and Halibut, we all caught some good fish. The elusive Wolffish did beat us but will be there next time.
Hello Geoff, firstly thank you so much for taking the time to send us your feedback. These are so important to us as it gives us great pleasure to hear about peoples adventures, also for the onsite guides so they can see that they are doing a great job and finally for future travellers.
A huge well done on the Halibut and dont they hang on!!
Where to next Geoff?
This was a trip of a lifetime for me and it went beyond all my dreams. As a regular boat angler I was truly spoilt with the quality of fish that our group caught. 3 halibut 110 to 123 cm approx 50lb cod to 34lb, coalies, haddock, red fish, ling ,and torsk. As a mixed fishery Vesteralen didn't disappoint . From tackle hire, accommodation and guides. The only negative was a bit more detail on gps/fish finder operation as it was a bit strange at first but once we figured it out was OK.Transport arrangements went smoothly and would highly recommend this venue to other anglers.
Hi Dave, so pleased to hear that you guys had a brilliant time. I was keeping up with all your facebook posts and looks like you enjoyed the experience. The briefing the guides give us normally fairly quick as there is a lot to go through. Thanks for your time filling this out and look forward to helping you in the near future
Tight lines, Paul
On the whole very good. We all really enjoyed the trip.
It would be good to have some tackle recommendations prior to leaving the UK. DB Angling have some great guides so maybe a link to their site.
I think the Guides on-site need to give more of a briefing on the boats and also the navigation channels that one needs to stick to.
Hi Anthony, thank you for your feedback its very helpful for us and future anglers thinking of such a trip and glad you enjoyed the holiday.
Did you not get your Pre-trip information? There is a very detailed tackle list in there which is specialised for each tour and when new tackle that comes out that works we update them.
Once again thank you for your feedback and look forward to assist you in the near future
Tight lines, Paul
Another great trip to Vesteralen, it’s a stunning setting, even managed to see a few Moose’s this time on the journey from and to the airport. Fishing was a bit harder this year than previous years but that can happen anywhere. We all managed to catch plenty of big Coalfish, Cod, Haddock plus a few smaller Halibut, not the big Halibut we had caught on previous trips. As a bonus we did see the Orcas, which is always nice to see. The first 4 days was windy but we still managed to find shelter, the final 2 days was flat calm and warm. One big bonus, no rain, first time ever 🥳🎣🍻
Hello Ian, thank you so much for your feedback. These are so important not just for us but people looking for their future trips.
Looks like you had some great experiences along the way and shame the fishing was a little slow, but like you say thats fishing.
Where to next year? Any plans yet hopefully we can catch up soon
Tight lines, Paul
Easy booking process, beautiful location, very good accommodation, excellent guides, highly recommended.
Hello keith, great to hear from you and thank you so much for your feedback. I totally agree with you its a great location and made even more special by the guides.
All the best, Paul
The fishing guides were excellent, very helpful throughout, there put us on some excellent fishing grounds , with a good variation of fish. Accommodation was clean , boat were clean and to a very high standard, made for a very enjoyable trip for all our group of 10.
Thank you very much for your feedback. Great to hear you had a good time.
Thanks for a great holiday
Thank you for your feedback
Was a great holiday..Good accommodation.. few issues with the cooker but soon sorted..the fishing was very good out at at sea but very poor in the fyord
We were most fortunate with the weather so wasn't much of an issue for us..but if weather was bad I could see dissapointment for people going vesterelan..the camp itself and the guides are both excellent..very helpful with marks and tips amongst other things...I would recommend vesterelan but would tell people good weather defiantly required
Glad you got the cooker sorted. Thank you for your great feedback.
Hi Sportquest, by far my best highlight was seeing a big halibut getting caught. Wonderful location and excellent boats
Hi Michael, thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback and its great to hear you loved Vesteralen. We think the new accommodation is a much better option. Hopefully will catch up with you guys soon
Tight lines, Paul
Excellent location and the fishing was varied. Top guides and great service
Hi Michael, thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. Vesteralen is one of my favourites as like you say, the fishing is so varied. Once you have settled back in I will call you for a chat about your next trip.
Tight lines, Paul
Baggage delayed 1st day, Having breakfast every day was a great way to start, only two guides between nine boats which were already pre-booked. made the week a lot harder.
Flotation suits worn were very needed, but the boats are the suits had no flotation devices on them at all .Unfortunately, the weather was not at its best one good day out of the six not your fault of course. Fishing was okay some boats caught better although that was down to experience but apparently this time last year the fishing was better. Beautiful scenery of course only to be topped off. My baggage didn’t arrive until four days after I got home not impressed..
Regards, Alex Turko
Hello Alex, thank you so much for sending us your feedback. The guides at Vesteralen are very popular and get booked out way in advance, but next time you guys booked I will make sure you get a days guided fishing. Are you referring to the life jackets? These are located in the flotation suit dry room. I did see the weather was bad when you guys were out there, such a shame and something that I would ideally love to be able to control. So sorry to hear about your luggage, same happened to me and its not pleasant. Once again thank you for your feedback and tight lines, Paul
From my first enquiry to Sportquest to the final booking and experience on the holiday was first class. The details of the holiday, what to expect, what we would receive, the flight bookings and the accommodation were excellent. This was the first fishing trip any of my party had taken to Norway so we had a lot of questions between us before we departed. All questions were answered really quickly and with superb accurate friendly replies. Sportquest really did make the whole process incredibly easy from start to finish. The accommodation was better than expected for us and the view we had looking over the bay was just fantastic, we felt very lucky to have been in the place we were designated. It was really clean and well maintained. The boats on sight were the same, great condition and well maintained as was all the facilities from the drying room, filleting areas and freezer. Rod hire was ok, nothing fancy here, just basic rods & reels but the tackle shop was well equiped and had everything you could need and was not any more expensive than what you would pay on line, so advice would be not to take too much tackle as it's as easy to get there as taking it with you. The guides can advise what is working at the time of your visit so saves taking tackle that may not be suitable anyway. The guides were very friendly and were keen to share honest advice to everyone in the morning & evening. This meant even if you never had a day on the guide boats you still had all the info required to catch your targes species. We were terribly unlucky with the weather. It rained for six out of the seven days and was windy enough for three days to restrict where we could go, but this never stopped us from catching seven species of fish and we had some excellent cod, coalfish, Ling, Tursk and even Haddock to 8lb. On a note of caution. The info provided about on site facilities is not wholy accurate. The on site ship restaraunt is only open Wed - Sat. Four days, not the seven as advised on your information pack. This also applies to the main hotel restaraunt. We got caught out on this on a very wet night thinking we would eat local, but couldn't as both on site restaurants were closed for evening meals so had to walk the ten - fifteen min into town for a meal and yes we got wet!. And on Sundays NOTHING is open, not even the local spar / grocery so if you plan to self cater be sure to have provisions in your accommodation. All in all we loved the trip to Stokmarknes, the area was as expected fantastic. The fishing was superb, the guides were great and everything was first class and I would ( will ) return here to create more lasting fishing memories.

This is our 5th time of going to Norway but our first using Sportsquest holidays.
Sportsquest are great from start to finish. Always kept highly informed, very informative and polite staff. We’ve already booked for 2025.
Hello Gary, so pleased you loved your experience and you enjoyed using our services. I shall pass on your very kind words to the staff as it means a lot to here that we are all doing a great job. Thank you for your feedback and tight lines, Paul
Boat and tackle provided were of good quality
Guides were helpful and even when not on our boat helped us make good decisions leading to better fishing thanks to their superb local knowledge
Personally I had the most success with butterfly jugs, 200-400g perks and soft plastic lures.
Though locals admitted it was one of the poorer summer seasons recorded at the camp we still managed to land some good fish with coalfish up to 6kg and cod up to 10kg as well as good sized haddock
Hello Edward, thank you so much for taking the time to send us your feedback. They are extremely important not to just us but to future anglers. The whole of Norway suffered this year with the extreme heat with water temps not seen before which has a knock on affect to the fishing. I am sure if you guys decide to travel, you will get more favourable weather. Tight lines, Paul

Hi Jason, thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. As this is your 5th trip with us, would you rate this destination as the best you have been to? I have been there myself many times and very much highly rate it. So glad the weather broke for you and you got to witness the open water fishing. Where next? Hopefully we can catch up soon

We were exceptionally proud to be involved with the Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing Christmas Special to Norway in 2022. Being the first time the programme had ventured outside the UK, it took a tremendous amount of work to produce the itinerary and cater for the thirteen-strong production team, but it was a fantastic couple of weeks away. If you enjoyed the programme, here is more information on Paul and Bob's trip and the itinerary it followed.
If you are looking for a family fishing holiday then Mefjord is the destination for you.
