Vesteralen, Fishing Report 16th May 2024

“What an awesome week we’ve had here in Vesterålen! A varied fishing experience targeting various species and crazy amounts of rain have been the highlights of the week, and it’s been great. Last Sunday, when the winds were low, we ventured out to the cod areas again, which were just as good as before. In just 1.5 hours, we had so much action with cod ranging from 5 to 15 kilos that we could go back to halibut fishing.

The halibut fishing has been so consistent that we’ve landed halibut every day this week in the guide boat, and our German guests, who have been fishing a lot of pollock with good results, have also landed some halibut, with the biggest one measuring a whopping 150 centimeters!

For the final guiding session of the week, I spent it in the Dutchmen’s boat. With southerly winds, we decided to focus on fishing for cod and pollock in the nearby area. We caught a bunch of nice cod at first, but then it was just a complete invasion of pollock in the 5-10 kilo range, which was really fun, but not something we wanted to spend too much time on.

We switched to light spinning gear and casted small jigs over some shallow kelp tops in search of coalfish instead, a fishing technique the guys in the boat were really eager to try, and for good reason, as these fish put up tough fights on the light gear. After just a short while, we found the right technique and spot, which resulted in us landing 7 nice coalfish, with the biggest one weighing 4 kilos!”
