Where Giants Still Run – Tarpon Fishing at Kwanza Lodge, Angola

Picture 200lb Silver Kings erupting from jungle-backed waters at the mouth of the mighty Cuanza River. This is Angola’s premier Tarpon fishery, exclusive to Sportquest Holidays, and one of the most exciting big-game destinations on the planet.

The Silver Kings here are joined by an extraordinary cast of heavyweights. African Threadfin to 90lb, Cubera Snapper breaking 100lb, and super-sized Jacks all patrol these waters. From the freshwater river stretches to the bluewater beyond, the variety is unmatched. Fish upriver for Threadfin, work the estuary for Tarpon, or run offshore in search of Cubera Snapper, Tuna or even Marlin. Every strike is violent, every fight unforgettable.

With limited commercial pressure and strict catch-and-release practices, the fishery is thriving. High numbers and large sizes are the norm. Whether drifting live baits, working jigs, or popping across the surface, you will experience raw, high-energy action throughout the day. Each session is tailored by your captain, with boats ready to run both inshore and offshore depending on the conditions and your goals.

Back on land, Kwanza Lodge provides spacious, air-conditioned rooms, a riverside pool, and a restaurant serving fresh seafood, grilled meats and traditional Angolan dishes alongside international favourites. Cold drinks at the bar and open-air dining round out the evenings, with comfort and service to match the scale of the fishing.

Book your trip today and test yourself against Angola’s giants at Kwanza Tarpon Lodge with Sportquest Holidays.

"Angola... What a place! Before I travelled I tried to do as much research as I could on the country and the fishing, as I'd never travelled somewhere so remote before, so was a little nervous. But from the second I left everything was taken care of and was so easy. If you like lure and popper fishing and the thought of not knowing what might smash your lure next, then I'd certainly recommend looking at the Kwanza Lodge."

"Angola was everything I was expecting and more! The fishing was fantastic, although my arms still ache from throwing the big lures and poppers for five days straight! I think when, not if I return, I'll definitely have to get down the gym a few weeks before I travel! Big thanks to everyone at the Kwanza Lodge too, they made me feel very welcome. "

World Famous Kwanza Tarpon Lodge

Fly out to Kwanza Lodge and experience the best Tarpon fishing Angola has to offer. With unimaginable Tarpon fishing at the stunning Kwanza fishing Lodge. Our Tarpon fishing Angola tours are quickly becoming one of our most popular Big Game fishing packages. Kwanza Lodge, one of the best Angola fishing lodges, is situated amongst some of the most beautiful scenery known to man. With over 40 miles of untouched beaches on one side of the Lodge. On the other hand, there is the fish packed River Cuanza. Kwanza River fishing offers a fantastic opportunity to catch Tarpon.

The huge Tarpon and the super-hard fighting Giant Threadfins are what attracts anglers from across the globe. Once hooked, you may find yourself giving up your regular fishing to spend all your time solely on Angola fishing tours. Many of the waters surrounding this Lodge have seen little to no fishing pressure. So the fish numbers are still very high. With Kwanza Lodge practising a good catch and release policy, numbers should stay high. They are making this one of the best Angola fishing spots available. The River Cuanza use to hold the Tarpon record back in the ’70s, and it will not be long before another gets caught. Tarpon fishing Angola allows its visitors to land a record-breaking fish.
Sportquest handles every detail, so you can focus on what matters: the fishing.

Where is Kwanza Lodge

Kwanza Tarpon Lodge was constructed back in the ’90s and was built on stilts on the Kwanza River banks famous for its giant Tarpon and is close to the mighty river’s mouth. For many years, anglers from around the world fished this little unheard piece of paradise. They kept quiet about how excellent the fishing was. Then there was civil unrest which put a stop to people travelling there.

Now that the country is slowly recovering, people start to head back there searching for the mighty Silver King. This recovery process is transforming Kwanza Lodge into one of the best fishing spots in Angola. With Kwanza Lodge located at the mouth of the mighty River Cuanza, you have the best of both worlds. Firstly, when the Tarpon enters the river system to escape the open ocean currents. Secondly, when the Tarpon cruises the shoreline, you have direct access to this as well.

What Species can I catch in Angola

Tarpon fishing Angola is varied with the opportunity to fish the freshwaters of the river Cuanza one day, the next you could be offshore fishing for enormous Marlin. The guides will make sure that all your requirements get taken care of. So if you wish to troll all day or even popper fish, this will be tailored to your itinerary. Another reason why big game fishing Angola is such a sought after destination.

The main species targeted at this destination are Tarpon which grows over 200lb, Cubera Snappers to 100lb, African Threadfin to 90lb and some super-sized Jacks. Tarpon fishing Angola makes you realise how good Tarpon fishing can be. Make sure to stop by our Big Game Facebook Community group to share your experiences, best catches and fishing tips.

You also have the usual offshore species available, from giant Marlin to shoals of Tuna. It is a multi-species destination suitable for all levels of fishing experience. The primary technique will be lure and popper fishing for most of these species; from large poppers to small vertical jigs, most of the species will be more than willing to take a well-presented lure. While lure or popper fishing is the most practised technique, a slowly drifted live or dead-bait free-lined on a circle hook trips up some of the wariest of species. The offshore species are targeted by trolling either soft lures or live baits.

When you find big shoals of busting Tuna, then an extensive cast of a popper will work very well, and the results will be explosive. Kwanza Lodge has a couple of very well equipped fishing boats for both inshore and offshore fishing. They come equipped with all the trolling equipment, but you will need to bring all the equipment yourself if you intend on lure fishing.

Angola fishing guides

The Tarpon fishing Angola guides at Kwanza Lodge are used to fishing many different styles and will accommodate lure, fly or bait fishing. Their knowledge of these waters and the species you will be targeting is second to none. On each boat, you will have a very knowledgeable captain. The captain will help with rigging up, casting techniques and, of course, taking that trophy shot. Make sure you mention to the captain the species you wish to target; they will then make a plan of attack and take you to areas that suit your chosen fishing style.
