Nubian Flats is home to some of the best saltwater fly fishing available with miles of untouched and unspoilt areas to explore. Dotted along the Red Sea coast of Sudan, there are countless islands, and a massive array of shallow water flats, all home to some fantastic species and most are completely unfished. Previously this area had been considered unfishable due to its remoteness. Now with the aid of a luxury liveaboard mothership, the Nubian Flats of the Red Sea will undoubtedly become a well-recognised saltwater fishing paradise for many future adventurous fly anglers.
Location of the Nubian Flats
Nubian Flats in Sudan, for many years, has not been classed as a viable destination due to the political unrest in neighbouring Southern Sudan; however, things have settled down, and tourism is again on the increase. Over the last 15 years, they are proud of their 100% safety record as the Red Sea coast of Sudan is a mecca for serious scuba diving enthusiasts as it boasts 3 of the top 10 dives sites in the world. Every week roughly 150 to 300 divers visit this area which equates to over 15,000 tourists over the 15 years, and during this period there haven’t been any political or other safety concerns.
Despite the reputation of the country, the Sudanese people are some of the most welcoming and friendly nations you will likely come across. From the moment you land they will welcome you with warm, open arms and will be proud to show you their environment. Once you arrive in Sudan, you will be greeted with the backdrop of the stark Nubian Desert and the electric blue of the Red Sea, a real adventure for any saltwater fly angler.
Our partners first explored this diverse coastline in May 2013, and since then they have never looked back and are now proud to be able to offer an annual professionally guided season on the Nubian Flats. Combined with a liveaboard mothership and fishing skiffs you will get to explore this vast coastline and be able to fish waters that see hardly any to no pressure whatsoever.
Fishing the Nubian Flats
Due to how vast the fishing area is, we spread the fishing pressure, which will keep this unique fishing experience pristine as it was when on our first visit. Each memorable trip will visit a variety of different flats off the mainland as well as some of the small stunning islands off the coast of Sudan, ensuring that all areas are well-rested. We run two separate itineraries to spread out further the little angling pressure we create. We run our main trips based on seven days fishing the Northern areas, on specific dates we also run special ten-day trips into the deep south.
On any of the flats, you can expect to target a vast number of Triggerfish and many Bluefin Trevally’s. You will also encounter many chances of cruising GT’s, Mangrove Snappers and very large Milkfish which are now becoming a popular species due to their speed and difficulty to hook. Other species include the elusive Bonefish and Permit, these tend to be a bit trickier, but there are chances each week of catching them. Around the edges of the flats where you find deep blue waters, there is enormous potential for big GTs, Dogtooth Tuna, Bluefin Trevally and many Grouper species, this style of fishing is exciting and high paced. All the fishing will be under the watchful eye of your professional fishing guides who will be with you helping you to achieve your primary fishing goals.
Boats
The standard seven-day trips are based on the Felicidad II Mothership, and the extended, deep south ten-day trips are based on the Don Questo Mothership. Both trips are accompanied by two Marshall Rubber dinghies 5,75 Mt, with 55 Hp Yamaha outboard engines. These boats are used to ferry customers and guides back and forth to the different areas of the fishing grounds as the majority of fishing will be conducted while wading the flats. We arrange a unique programme each day depending on what you wish to fish for and where you would like to head. You can decide to fish the many flats where you will be dropped off to start your days wading, or you can choose to explore the edges for the chance of some truly giant GT’s and the very hard fighting Dogtooth Tunas. Depending on which program you are fishing on and what and how you wish to fish. Guiding will be based on one guide to two customers or one guide to three customers.
Guides of the Nubian flats
All groups are guided by world-class English speaking professional guides, with a wealth of experience in the fly fishing industry. Each group of six anglers is accompanied by our guides to ensure safety at all times when wading the flats and offshore reefs of the Red Sea.
