Nubian Flats | Fly Fishing | Sudan

Tour code: SUD001

Nubian Flats is home to some of the best saltwater fly fishing available with miles of untouched and unspoilt areas to explore. Dotted along the Red Sea coast of Sudan, there are countless islands, and a massive array of shallow water flats, all home to some fantastic species and most are completely unfished. Previously this area had been considered unfishable due to its remoteness. Now with the aid of a luxury liveaboard mothership, the Nubian Flats of the Red Sea will undoubtedly become a well-recognised saltwater fishing paradise for many future adventurous fly anglers.

Location of the Nubian Flats

Nubian Flats in Sudan, for many years, has not been classed as a viable destination due to the political unrest in neighbouring Southern Sudan; however, things have settled down, and tourism is again on the increase. Over the last 15 years, they are proud of their 100% safety record as the Red Sea coast of Sudan is a mecca for serious scuba diving enthusiasts as it boasts 3 of the top 10 dives sites in the world. Every week roughly 150 to 300 divers visit this area which equates to over 15,000 tourists over the 15 years, and during this period there haven’t been any political or other safety concerns.

Despite the reputation of the country, the Sudanese people are some of the most welcoming and friendly nations you will likely come across. From the moment you land they will welcome you with warm, open arms and will be proud to show you their environment. Once you arrive in Sudan, you will be greeted with the backdrop of the stark Nubian Desert and the electric blue of the Red Sea, a real adventure for any saltwater fly angler.

Our partners first explored this diverse coastline in May 2013, and since then they have never looked back and are now proud to be able to offer an annual professionally guided season on the Nubian Flats. Combined with a liveaboard mothership and fishing skiffs you will get to explore this vast coastline and be able to fish waters that see hardly any to no pressure whatsoever.

Fishing the Nubian Flats

Due to how vast the fishing area is, we spread the fishing pressure, which will keep this unique fishing experience pristine as it was when on our first visit. Each memorable trip will visit a variety of different flats off the mainland as well as some of the small stunning islands off the coast of Sudan, ensuring that all areas are well-rested. We run two separate itineraries to spread out further the little angling pressure we create. We run our main trips based on seven days fishing the Northern areas, on specific dates we also run special ten-day trips into the deep south.

On any of the flats, you can expect to target a vast number of Triggerfish and many Bluefin Trevally’s. You will also encounter many chances of cruising GT’s, Mangrove Snappers and very large Milkfish which are now becoming a popular species due to their speed and difficulty to hook. Other species include the elusive Bonefish and Permit, these tend to be a bit trickier, but there are chances each week of catching them. Around the edges of the flats where you find deep blue waters, there is enormous potential for big GTs, Dogtooth Tuna, Bluefin Trevally and many Grouper species, this style of fishing is exciting and high paced. All the fishing will be under the watchful eye of your professional fishing guides who will be with you helping you to achieve your primary fishing goals.

The standard seven-day trips are based on the Felicidad II Mothership, and the extended, deep south ten-day trips are based on the Don Questo Mothership. Both trips are accompanied by two Marshall Rubber dinghies 5,75 Mt, with 55 Hp Yamaha outboard engines. These boats are used to ferry customers and guides back and forth to the different areas of the fishing grounds as the majority of fishing will be conducted while wading the flats. We arrange a unique programme each day depending on what you wish to fish for and where you would like to head. You can decide to fish the many flats where you will be dropped off to start your days wading, or you can choose to explore the edges for the chance of some truly giant GT’s and the very hard fighting Dogtooth Tunas. Depending on which program you are fishing on and what and how you wish to fish. Guiding will be based on one guide to two customers or one guide to three customers.

Guides of the Nubian flats

All groups are guided by world-class English speaking professional guides, with a wealth of experience in the fly fishing industry. Each group of six anglers is accompanied by our guides to ensure safety at all times when wading the flats and offshore reefs of the Red Sea.

Nubian Flats Liveaboard

For our Nubian Flats Liveaboard adventures, we use two liveaboard motherships. We use the Don Questo for all our longer trips in the deep south and the Felicidad for all trips in the north.

Don Questo

The Don Questo was built in Selby (England) in 1964 originally as a trawling vessel. In 1991 she had a complete overhaul, but it was in 1998 that the Don Questo was upgraded to become a diving & fishing liveaboard ship with renovated new toilets, additional cabins, and improved restaurant and kitchen areas.

There are seven double cabins and one triple, all with wash-hand basin with warm and cold water. As we limit the number of customers to 6 each week, plus one group leader means that everyone gets their private room. There are four showers and five toilets for customers to share. All the w.c.’s are of the standard domestic variety with a single flush action!

The boat is fully air-conditioned in all areas. The dining area comfortably seats 20 people. There is a recreational room with television, video recorder, DVD and hi-fi system. The upper deck is a sunbathers paradise with beds and deck chairs to stretch out and enjoy the hot Sudanese sun! As you can see, there is lots of room on this

M/Y Felicidad II is a beautiful 30-meter steel motor yacht, essential and elegant, mainly designed for underwater cruises. Built-in 1991 it has been completely renovated from July 2017 to February 2018.

The lower deck has eight double cabins, divided into six cabins with a double bed + a single one and two cabins with two bunk beds. All cabins have air conditioning and a private bathroom with a hot and cold shower, toilet equipped with a shower and medium towels. As we only run these liveaboard trip with six customers, each person gets a single room to themself.

In the main deckthere is the cosy internal dinette, with two tables for breakfast and lunch, equipped with minibar, TV, hi-fi, mp3 player, board games, video library and a well-stocked international library.

The upper deck has two lunch tables in the open air to enjoy the scenery that surrounds us, many sofas and large sundecks where you can read, chat and enjoy a well-deserved relaxation.

The sun deck to enjoy the sun in extreme privacy. Expert Nubian flats guides assure high-quality services on board and are supported by available local and Italian speaking crew and by an excellent chef who will delight you with his cuisine based on Italian, international and local specialities.

Questions & Answers

Where will I fish?

Where you fish will depend if you are on one of our 6 days fishing itineraries in the north of Sudan or the longer 9 days fishing itineraries in the deep south of Sudan. Also, note each night with the guides everyone will discuss where and what they would like to fish for. Fishing is mainly done wading and will be anything from coral flats, rocky outcrops and drop off to the deeper water.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

Not long as you are staying on a mothership one advantage is you are close to the fishing action each day so no very long runs to the fishing grounds which means more time spent fishing.

What species will I catch?

On the flats, you will target Triggerfish (yellow margin & titan), Bluefin Trevally, Giant Trevally, Orange Spot Trevally, Bohar Snapper, Grouper, Bumphead Parrotfish, Greater Barracuda, some Permit and Milkfish. We also get some opportunities at big bonefish but it’s important to keep in mind that the Nubian Flats is not a Bonefish destination and shots at these fish are more a bonus than anything else. Offshore there are also lots of Dogtooth Tuna in the 10-25 KG range, Sailfish and a whole variety of reef species.

How will I fish?

The fishing is done while wading the flats looking for cruising and tailing fish. Deepwater dredging off the tender boats is also effective with a fly. Conventional anglers can do some vertical jigging offshore and pop over specifically earmarked reefs. No conventional fishing is allowed on the flats and the reefs surrounding them.

Do the guides speak English?

Yes. The guides can all speak fluent English. The guide’s team is both professional and passionate about the fishery. They are South African with the addition of one Italian guide who is also part-owner of the boat. The guides will be on hand to look after every need of the angler and will make sure that each guest gets the best possible outcome from their time spent on & off the water.

What skill level is required?

The only thing we ask of our guests is to practice their casting before coming on the trip, regardless of their skill level. Practice with the same rods and lines that you will be using to get a good feel for them. By doing this, you will increase your catch-rate and make your trip much more enjoyable

How physically demanding is this trip?

The majority of the fishing is done on foot, wading the flats. So the angler must have a reasonable fitness level. The terrain can also be hard at times as some flats have areas of very sharp uneven coral. The days can also be quite hot. Generally, the older folks tend to get quite fatigued towards the end of the trip. There is no age limit on this trip but older folks should assess their fitness before booking.

What is the accommodation like?

Both the liveaboard operations provide great bright and clean accommodation all based on single rooms. There is plenty of space on each of the motherships for relaxing between your fishing trips and for all your fishing tackle.

What is the food like?

Food is all of the high class, with each mothership has its own dedicated ship. Food is of all different nationalities and there is always something for everyone’s tastes. If advance notice is given we can also cater for any special dietary needs.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

No fishing tackle is provided.

Is internet and phone signal available?

There is no internet or telephone signal once you are on the liveaboard ships, there is an onboard satellite phone for any emergencies.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel arrangements we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.
