Alphonse is one of the most complete saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. Set over three hundred kilometres southwest of Mahé, its white sand flats, lagoons, and bluewater combine to create a fishery where variety is the hallmark. Few places offer such a concentration of species and opportunity in a single location.
On the flats, Bonefish feed in numbers across shallow sand, Indo-Pacific Permit test patience, and Triggerfish demand accuracy. Giant and Bluefin Trevally prowl the coral edges, while Milkfish — abundant here and growing to over 40lb — provide one of the ultimate saltwater fly challenges. Offshore, Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, Parrotfish, Sailfish, and Tuna bring added power and explosive encounters. Every tide brings the chance of something different.
The fishing is fully guided and limited to twelve rods, with two anglers per guide. Sessions are a mix of wading pristine flats and fishing from custom-built skiffs, allowing anglers to cover both skinny water and deeper edges with precision.
Life on the island is defined by comfort. Alphonse Lodge blends barefoot luxury with island charm, offering beach bungalows and suites just steps from the water. Facilities include a spa, fine dining restaurant, and world-class service. Non-anglers have no shortage of options, from diving and water sports to exploring the island itself.
Alphonse is a destination for anglers who like species variety and technical fishing, matched with luxury accommodation and the atmosphere of a private island paradise.

The Seychelles has become the mecca for saltwater fly fishing anglers, with one location standing out above the Alphonse group. The Alphonse group is considered one of the most desirable saltwater fishing destinations globally and is a wonderland for anglers due to its pristine waters and exceptional variety of species.
A nature lover’s paradise, Alphonse is one of the world’s most pristine, untouched Edens. The islands in the atoll enjoy an exquisite climate and miles of unblemished shorelines, lagoons and sea flats. A tiny, triangular coral island situated approximately 1,000 miles off the east coast of Africa and 310 nautical miles southwest of Mahe. It consists of three formations in a small and isolated group, including Alphonse in the north, Bijoutier in the middle, and St. François in the south.
This famed saltwater fly fishing destination in the Indian Ocean offers more than ten thousand acres of white sand flats, all providing easy wading and explosive fishing. The Alphonse Island fishing atolls are home to vast populations of all manner of traditional flats species; there’s also a thriving off-shore and bluewater fishery. Besides the scenery and angling opportunities, one thing which truly sets it apart is the combination of stylish hotel accommodation alongside the chance to fish three different islands right on your doorstep.

Alphonse Island fishing offers vast Bonefish populations, three different types of Triggerfish, Milkfish, Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, Indo-Pacific Permit, Parrotfish, and eight Trevally species all call the waters in and around the island home.
With a wide variety of environments to fish, each day can provide a different challenge, although the majority of the fishing is done by wading. The white sand flats are teeming with bonefish, and vast schools ghost across the flats, with big singles and doubles feeding along the drop-offs. For those in pursuit of Giant Trevally and Bluefin Trevally, the coral edges and finger flats are ideal hunting grounds. Not for the faint-hearted, the reef walks to the wrecks are demanding but ultimately rewarding. One of the most challenging of all the flats species is the Milkfish; on Alphonse Island, these turbo-charged algae eaters are abundant and grow to over 40lb.
In addition to this, there is excellent mixed fishing to be had with three species of Triggerfish, Grouper and Indo Pacific Permit and a host of other fly-taking fish to be caught. Plus, there’s also an exciting offshore and blue water fishery; within a short boat journey from the shore, you can connect with species like Sailfish and Tuna.
The atolls of Alphonse consist of a central lagoon, hard white-sand flats and a coral perimeter reef and are considered by many to be the worlds most exquisite and diverse saltwater fishery. But they aren’t just a haven for anglers but outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The atolls inhabitants are committed to protecting every element of it, from the fishing to the unique fauna and flora of the area. Ongoing research, rehabilitation and monitoring programs, focusing primarily on nesting sea turtles, giant tortoises, sensitive marine habitats and forest rehabilitation, are also on the agenda.
With these things in place, it’s no surprise that fishing is done on a strictly catch-and-release basis, with environmentally friendly fishing consistently practised. The result of this is the exciting, varied fishing on offer. Another reason for this is the management of the fishery itself, with a limited number of rods and in-turn angling pressure. The St. François fishery caters for just 12 fly anglers at a time to maintain exclusivity and sustainability.

The eight professional full-time guides on Alphonse Island fishing are some of the most experienced on the outer islands, with a very comprehensive knowledge of the areas they operate in and around. They are all fluent in English, and some speak French and Creole. The guiding takes place on a rotational basis, allowing anglers to experience all the different aspects of the fishery and all the different personalities and characteristics of each guide. All the guides carry waterproof VHF radios and are in constant communication with each other and the base on Alphonse. They are all qualified skippers, and their boat handling skills are impeccable. Their passion and dedication is infectious, and rest assured, they will go the extra mile in search of your fish of a lifetime.
For Alphonse Island fishing, fly tackle is available for hire. There is a fully kitted shop at the fishing centre that can provide you with most of the tackle you will need for your trip, including a full range of flies that are custom tied for Alphonse, utilising the right hooks and with the suitable materials. If you wanted to take your own, we recommend an 8-weight or 9-weight outfit for the smaller species like Bonefish & Permit, and 10-weight or 12-weight outfit for the larger species like Giant Trevally and Triggerfish.
