Rio Marie Lodge Brazil Fly Fishing For Peacock bass

Customer Rating 96%

Jungle Giants: Fly Fishing for Peacock Bass in the Amazon, Rio Marié Lodge, Brazil

Rio Marié Lodge is the benchmark for Peacock Bass fly fishing in Brazil, offering privileged access to the largest fish of this extraordinary species anywhere in the Amazon. For anglers seeking size, challenge and the thrill of casting to predators that redefine freshwater power, this is the destination.

Set deep within the Rio Marié basin, the lodge controls more than 500 miles of river and tributaries inside a protected Indigenous reserve. Strict fly-only regulations and limited angler numbers ensure the fishery remains pristine and virtually untouched. The result is consistent access to water that produces fish of extraordinary proportions.

Peacock Bass here average 10 to 15lb, with regular encounters of 20lb or more. You will sight cast across lagoons, channels and submerged jungle structure, often watching the strike in water so clear it feels like flats fishing. The takes are violent, the runs are dogged and the surface explosions unforgettable.

Fishing is arranged as two anglers per guide, from skiffs designed for precision on these remote waters. The guides are experienced professionals, trained in Amazon conditions, who know how to find and handle the giants. Evenings are spent aboard the Untamed Amazon, a purpose-built mothership offering chef-prepared dining, panoramic rainforest views, en-suite cabins with air conditioning and even a deck jacuzzi.

Book your trip today with Sportquest Holidays and experience Rio Marié Lodge, where exclusive access to protected waters meets the pursuit of record-class Peacock Bass.

"I'd been debating Brazil for probably 2-3 years and finally last year I bit the bullet and booked it up! One week on from my trip, I'm so glad I did! The fishing, accommodation, staff, guides, food and drink were all fantastic. It's a very, very long way to travel but in my opinion it's totally worth it. "

"Until you visit this area of Brazil you cannot comprehend how wild and remote this destination is. It takes an absolute age to travel there (as to be expected) and it might not be for everyone, but for me, it was first class. Casting flies in the depths of the jungle, just not knowing what might attack your fly next is a fantastic experience. "

"The Peacock Bass had always been a species on my bucket list and finally this year I was able to tick it off. When I travelled to Rio Marie I had no expectations and said to myself I'd be happy with just one of the species, but the fishing completely blew my mind. I landed Peacocks every day, including some really nice fish to over 10lb. The guides were so knowledgeable and the Untamed Amazon was super smart. "

"I've been lucky enough to fish and stay on a few different liveaboards around the world, but the Untamed Amazon was by far the best. It had all the facilities you'd usually associate with a first-class hotel but on the water. After a long hard day of fishing, it was a pleasure to return back to it. I'd like to thank all the staff and guides who were exceptional. "

"Before I left I was told that the fishing at the Rio Marie Lodge was some of the best found anywhere in Brazil and after my week there, I'd have to agree! The fishing for the Peacock Bass was explosive. I didn't land anything massive but caught fish each day, I think the biggest I landed was around 10lb. If someone was looking for an off-grid fishing adventure then I'd thoroughly recommend this destination and tour. "

Rio Marie Fly Fishing

The Rio Negro basin is the most significant drainage water globally, with around 710,000 square kilometres of land and is one of Brazils most preserved regions. Near the Colombian border in the Northwest corner of the Amazon, one of its main tributaries, the Rio Marie River, begins its journey. Located around 800 kilometres from the northwest city of Manaus, one of the most important cities in the Brazilian Amazon, this untouched, natural environment covers more than 2 million hectares of land.

Comprising of more than 180 known creeks, 60 lakes, and three significant tributaries, the fishing operation based on the river offers a vibrant, endless array of freshwater fly fishing opportunities. Encompassing a vast amount of virgin water, the river is home to an incredible population of Peacock Bass, offering travelling anglers the chance to hook and release larger-than-average specimens on the fly.

The Rio Marie Lodge project was the first government-sanctioned operation in Brazil and developed as a joint venture between a private enterprise and an Indian Association. Fishing from the first green ship in the Amazon – the Untamed Amazon, specially designed for the Marie project, it provides anglers with the chance to experience an unforgettable adventure through a fabled land and a rainforest home to more than half the worlds species of plants and animals.

This trip is also available as a hosted tour exclusive for Sportquest Holidays customers and is ideal for solo anglers, pairs of friends and even small groups. Our team of hosts are hugely experienced as both hosts and fishing guides and are well travelled, taking trips of customers around the world and fishing in a wide array of different environments. You can see the hosted tour here.

The Largest Peacock Bass In The Amazon Basin

The fishing at the Rio Marie Lodge is some of the best found anywhere in Brazil, and this isn’t just a guess; it’s a fact.

The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) has conducted numerous studies on the region and have found that the river holds at least double the quantity of trophy-sized Peacock Bass compared with any other destination in the Rio Negro basin. For travelling fly fishing anglers, this equates to a genuine opportunity to catch some of the largest Peacock Bass found anywhere in the Amazon Basin and the world. This fishing operation is undoubtedly one where fly anglers really can pursue and conquer the dream of reaching a world record on the fly.

The average size of the Speckled Peacock Bass in the river is 10lb, and fish over 15lb are not uncommon; year on year, the river has also seen a significant influx of fish weighing over the magical 20lb mark. As a result, it’s now the most prolific river in Brazil for true trophy Peacocks.

Fishing for these colourful specimens isn’t a numbers game, and not every angler will land a fish of a lifetime. Still, in the 2015 season, on average, over half of the anglers fishing the Rio Marie managed to land a fish of over 20lb, and more 20lb+ fish got landed than any other river destination in the Amazon.

In addition to the giant Speckled Peacock Bass, the river also features healthy populations of other species, including the smaller Butterfly Peacocks, which average 2lb to 6lb. These fish are super colourful and even more aggressive than the Peacocks and often go airborne when hooked. They provide some fantastic sport and help keep anglers enthralled and engaged while searching and fishing for their even larger cousins.

Fishing In The Amazon

The fishing in this area of South America at Rio Marie Lodge usually runs from August to February, which coincides with the dry season for the upper Negro basin. During this time of year, the waters are typically at their lowest and most stable, which allows for the best fishing throughout the entire river system, including its numerous tributaries and lagoons. Of course, all fisheries found in the Negro Basin have variant conditions according to each year’s hydrological cycles, but Rio Maries headwater system, geographical location and immensity of its drainage, means it’s much more stable than other regional destinations.

The fishing on the river is based on two anglers sharing one beat of the river, with one professional English-speaking fly fishing guide and a local indigenous guide. All the fishing gets performed from specially designed, twenty-foot wide-bodied boats, which feature two casting platforms, a centre console, and 90hp 4-stroke motors and remote-controlled electric motors.

A typical day at the Rio Marie Lodge starts around 5.30 am a with coffee before breakfast is served around 7.00 am. Usually, anglers leave the Untamed Amazon liveaboard around 8.00 am and head to the fishing grounds. Anglers fish all morning until around midday, when the fishing stops for a picnic-style lunch on the river. The afternoon fishing session carries on until around 5.30 pm, when the guide will motor you back to the liveaboard to get cleaned up, enjoy some cocktails and appetizers and before dinners, get served around 8.30 pm.

The Best Fly Fishing Tackle To Use In Brazil

When fishing at the Rio Marie Lodge and the wild waters of the Amazon Basin, you must get tackled up correctly to target the hard fighting species that live within it. The Peacock Bass, especially of trophy size, take no prisoners and will test your tackle and wits to the limit. Therefore, strong 7-weight to 10-weight single-handed rods with a powerful butt section are recommended; your favourite bonefish and baby tarpon rod will be perfect. It’s nice to have two set-ups, one 8-weight rod for smaller Peacocks with a floating line and one 9-weight or 10-weight rod with an intermediate (clear) sinking line.

As with rods, reels designed for saltwater fly-fishing are the best choice. Peacocks will test your stripping fingers more than your reel, but if you can get them on the reel before they get into the wood, a reel with a substantial, smooth drag is essential, and so is 30lb backing. Most of the fishing for the species in the river gets done close to the surface, so weight forward lines designed for the tropics and saltwater are what you need. It’s also worth packing a fast sinking sink tip for some specific spots and some high water situations. Peacock Bass are not particularly shy, but leaders should be heavy enough to turn over a big wind resistant fly. Spools of fluorocarbon should include 50lb and 60lb breaking strains; however, record-seekers should bring a wider variety.

The fishing gets done using various baitfish, minnow, terrestrials and even algae imitation flies. For baitfish imitations for Peacock Bass, streamers in White, Yellow, Chartreuse and combinations of these colours are very effective. Adding a bunch of flash to these can also make all the difference in the clear water.

The programme at the Rio Marie Lodge is fly fishing only; it’s also all based around catch and release, so barbless hooks are mandatory, and so is the unnecessary handling of the fish. The handling of all the fish from the river requires precaution to avoid hurting them and to prevent injuries to you.

Lodging on the Untamed Amazon liveaboard was a surreal experience, it was genuinely like a first-class fishing hotel that floats!

Until you visit this area of Brazil you cannot comprehend how wild and remote this destination is. It takes an absolute age to travel there (as to be expected) and it might not be for everyone, but for me, it was first class. Casting flies in the depths of the jungle, just not knowing what might attack your fly next is a fantastic experience.

The Peacock Bass had always been a species on my bucket list and finally this year I was able to tick it off.

I've been lucky enough to fish and stay on a few different liveaboards around the world, but the Untamed Amazon was by far the best. It had all the facilities you'd usually associate with a first-class hotel but on the water. After a long hard day of fishing, it was a pleasure to return back to it. I'd like to thank all the staff and guides who were exceptional.

Before I left I was told that the fishing at the Rio Marie Lodge was some of the best found anywhere in Brazil and after my week there, I'd have to agree! The fishing for the Peacock Bass was explosive. I didn't land anything massive but caught fish each day, I think the biggest I landed was around 10lb. If someone was looking for an off-grid fishing adventure then I'd thoroughly recommend this destination and tour.

FAQ

The lodge is in the Rio Negro basin of the Brazilian Amazon, near the Colombian border, around 800 kilometres from Manaus.
The main focus is Speckled Peacock Bass, with additional opportunities for Butterfly Peacock Bass.
Speckled Peacock Bass average around 10lb, with many fish over 15lb and trophy specimens exceeding 20lb landed each season. As a result, it’s now the most prolific river in Brazil for true trophy Peacocks.
Studies by IBAMA confirmed the river holds at least double the number of trophy-sized Peacock Bass compared to any other Rio Negro destination.
The season runs from August to February, during the dry season when river levels are at their lowest and most stable.
All the fishing gets performed from specially designed, twenty-foot wide-bodied boats, with anglers exploring more than 180 creeks, 60 lakes, and three major tributaries across the river system.
Guests stay on the Untamed Amazon, the first green ship in the Amazon, purpose-built for the Marié project. Offering air conditioning, hot tub, and fly-shop.
Anglers are led by experienced guides, one professional English-speaking fly-fishing guide and a local indigenous guide, and a ratio of two anglers per guide.
Fishing is guided and fly only. Strong 7–10 weight rods with saltwater reels, tropical floating lines, and fluorocarbon leaders of 50–60lb are advised for the powerful Peacock Bass. Streamers in white, yellow, chartreuse, and flashy mixes work best. All fishing is fly only, catch and release, with barbless hooks required.
The project was the first government-sanctioned fishing operation in Brazil and is a joint venture between a private enterprise and an Indian Association.
