Fly Fishing For Roosters Mexico The Bay Of Dreams

Customer Rating 99%

Roosterfish Paradise: Fly Fishing the Bay of Dreams, Mexico

Roosterfish are one of saltwater fly fishing’s greatest prizes, and Baja’s Bay of Dreams is arguably the best place on earth to target them. This stretch of the East Cape delivers both numbers and size, with powerful fish patrolling miles of coastline and rich offshore waters. Gentle seas, reliable weather, and dramatic drop-offs create the perfect setting to test both skill and stamina against these elusive predators.

Fishing is split between offshore pangas and beach sight-fishing. Offshore, teasers and live bait draw Roosters into range, where quick double-hauls and fast deliveries are essential. On the beaches, it’s stalking and casting to cruising fish, with 4x4s moving you from mark to mark. May and June bring the heaviest Roosters, while summer adds Dorado, Marlin, Tuna, Bonito, Jacks, Pargo, and even Milkfish to the mix. Each day offers genuine variety.

Days are guided two anglers per boat with expert local captains and a rotating host offering fly-fishing instruction.

Accommodation is in beachfront villas overlooking white sand and turquoise sea. Each suite features a private bath, pool, and access to the lodge’s private beach, with an adjacent reef for snorkelling or fishing. Kayaks, a weight room, tennis courts, and spa facilities are available, and a wide range of non-angling activities make this an ideal retreat for companions and families.

A holiday at El Bahia de Los Sueños is about more than the fight. It’s about the thrill of chasing world-class Roosters in Mexico’s Bay of Dreams, with luxury on shore and memorable fishing at sea.

"I'm not going to lie after my husband suggested we go on a 'fishing holiday' I was a little dubious, but after seeing the resort online he soon twisted my arm and I'm so glad he did! The resort was better than I ever imagined and while my husband was out fishing I was made to feel incredibly welcome by the staff who couldn't do enough for me. I know my husband loved the fishing as he hasn't stopped talking about it since we've been home! "

"The Roosterfish fishing was insane!!! During the week I landed good numbers of Roosters each day from both the boat and beach. The resort was first class too and the surrounding area was stunning. I'd like to give a special mention to the guides, who were so switched on and really knowledgeable. I'd certainly love to return again next year. "

"One species I'd always wanted to catch, especially on the fly rod was a Roosterfish, so after a few phone calls and hours on the internet, I was booked up to visit 'the bay of dreams' - a name which is very fitting. My stay was superb, the resort was absolutely beautiful, the staff incredibly helpful and welcoming and the fishing mind blowing! I can happily tick this one off my bucket list! Thank you to all involved. "

El Bahia de Los Suenos

Fly Fish Mex, or the El Bahia de Los Suenos, is located 45 minutes southeast of La Paz, in Baja’s East Cape, Mexico, amidst some of the best saltwater fly fishing found anywhere in the country. The area, also commonly referred to as the ‘Bay of Dreams’, offers travelling rods mile upon mile of open and accessible coastline, as well as some of the richest offshore waters found anywhere in the world. Here, the Roosterfish is king, and the area is probably the number one destination for both numbers and large average size of fish.

The gentle seas, fair weather, steep drop to the ocean floor, incredible numbers of resident Roosters and migrating pelagic make it the perfect setting for fly fishing. Every season, anglers from all four corners of the globe flock to this area with the hope of hooking and landing one of these beautiful bluewater specimens. Those who have been fly fishing for Roosterfish or who’ve landed them before will know the challenge; they’re the pinnacle of angling patience and fly-fishing ability.

For those anglers who wish to travel, perhaps with a non-angling companion or their families, Bahia de Los Suenos is the perfect destination. Situated right on the beachfront, it not only offers guests a vast array of stunning saltwater fly fishing opportunities but also a wide range of non-angling activities, from Snorkeling and kayaking to scuba diving, wakeboarding and windsurfing.

Fishing The 'Bay of Dreams'

The fishing at El Bahia de Los Suenos is predominantly built around fly fishing for Roosterfish, either from the shore or one of the lodges open Pangas and is all based on two anglers per guide.

Offshore Fishing

A typical day fishing offshore starts around 6.30 am, with anglers getting collected from the beach, in one of the 23-26ft open Panga boats. Many of the best Rooster spots get found within a few minutes of the shore, especially around East Cape and Cerralvo Island. Live bait in the shape of fresh Sardines, along with teasers, are often used to locate and draw fish into casting range and keep them there. A solid double haul with quick delivery will increase the odds of success, and casting distance is also an advantage with shy fish.

Beach Fishing

Fly fishing for Roosterfish from the beach is a sight fishing game, and it’s key to walk the shore looking and casting towards cruising fish. When a fish is spotted, it can often see anglers scrambling to make a cast, and this fishing is a unique blend of sight-fishing, casting, walking, and chaos. The fishing is all situated relatively close to the lodge, although a 4×4 jeep is used to transfer anglers from beach to beach. Like with the boat fishing at El Bahia de Los Suenos, a guide is always on hand to help and advise.

Fly Fishing For Roosterfish

Fly fishing for Roosterfish tends to be the predominant quarry, and large specimens migrate into the area during May and the beginning of June and will aggressively take a well-placed fly. These fish have exceptional eyesight and incredible acceleration, making them a challenge to hook and land. As the season progresses, the larger Roosterfish move to deeper, cooler water and become more cautious; however, 10lb to 15lb fish will remain abundant.

As the summer progresses and hot weather sets in, Dorado or mahi-mahi appear in vast numbers, and any floating structure has the potential to hold fish. Fishing around commercial sharking buoys can often be highly productive, and a handful of Sardines will usually get the party started. A fierce take and acrobatic displays make Dorado one of fly fishing’s top sport fish.

Though Dorado and Roosterfish get a lot of press, there are numerous other exciting species to target. Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Skipjack, Bonito, Jack Crevalle and Pargo are a few others that can provide some fantastic sport when fished for with the correct tackle.

Another species that has been showing up in good numbers in recent years is the Milkfish. These often get found feeding lazily on the surface in massive schools of between 50 to 200 fish. They can be exceptionally finicky but offer some solid potential.

Fly Fish Mex Peak Season

The fishing in Baja’s East Cape can be excellent all-year-round, but often the most productive months for fly fishing come in May, June and July and then again from the end of September, October and November. August is monsoon season, and in early September, there is still a chance of tropical storms.

Fly fishing for Roosterfish starts in May when the migrating fish arrive, and then as the weather warms, they are joined by a whole host of other species. This region in Mexico enjoys predominantly calm seas and calm conditions in early Spring, Summer and fall, and it’s not uncommon to encounter pelagic species, such as Dorado, Striped Marlin, and Tuna within a mile of shore.

Boats & Guides

The local fishing vessel of choice throughout Baja, Mexico, is the panga. These 20-26ft open boats are perfect for sport fishing. The open floor plan and lack of overhead obstruction make an excellent set-up for fly fishing. In addition, the conditions and topography present a unique opportunity to catch big fish from a small boat. They can seat 2-3 anglers and are suitable for inshore or offshore outings.

Each boat has one Captain that is friendly and well-experienced with fly fishing. Their English is limited, but they can communicate. They know quite a bit of English but can be shy. The fishing host also rotates between boats during the trip to offer more detailed fishing instruction.

Family & Couples Retreat

One of the most popular things about our destination in El Bahia de Los Suenos is the range of high-quality activities on offer for travelling non-anglers and families. With the accommodation situated right on the beachfront, there are miles upon miles of white sandy beaches to explore and relax on. There’s also the warm, clear turquoise water perfect for swimming and snorkelling. After your first day in this Mexican paradise, you’ll soon realise why the area gets referred to as the ‘Bay of Dreams’. If you prefer something a little more adventurous and faster-paced, there’s kayaking, wakeboarding, sailing and even windsurfing. There’s also the option to explore the bays and reefs close to the lodge and the Baja’s beautiful uninhabited Islands – Cerralvo Island is just a 5-mile Panga ride away.

If you fancy leaving the resort, then an air-conditioned eight-seater minibus is on hand to transport you to any of the local towns and cities. La Paz is only a short drive away and offers many sightseeing opportunities, a range of fantastic restaurants and even the option of a round or two of golf. Todos Santos is one of Baja’s most colourful towns and offers tremendous surfing opportunities, while the historic town of El Triunfo is only a thirty-minute drive. It is famed for its gold and silver mines, historic colonial buildings, and chic café and restaurants. The Bay of Dreams is a remote, safe and relaxing escape from the everyday working world.
