Fly Fish Mex Fishing Report 17th March 2026

The 2025 season will likely be remembered for the sheer amount of bait around the Island. From April through November, large schools of Sardines filled the beaches and nearshore waters. At times the bait stretched for miles along the shoreline, and where the bait went the predators followed. Roosterfish and Jacks were a constant presence, sometimes working bait aggressively in big schools and other times cruising the beaches in smaller groups. On calm mornings anglers could often see long chains of spawning Roosterfish and Jack Crevalle moving just off the sand. It was a great sign of how healthy the fishery has been this year.

Offshore fishing had its usual changes as different pelagic species moved through the area. Sailfish held around the Island for several good weeks before shifting farther offshore toward the buoys. Later in the season, Blue Marlin began showing up just outside the bay, giving anglers opportunities at these fish surprisingly close to shore. Tuna made their first appearance in July, disappeared for a while, and then returned again toward the end of October. Dorado numbers were not as strong as in some previous seasons, but there were still enough around to keep anglers busy.

Magdalena Bay once again produced excellent fishing in the fall. From late October through December, most of the action stayed relatively close, often just outside Cabo Tosca. During this period Marlin pushed large balls of Mackerel and Sardines to the surface, creating some incredible. feeding activity. Fly anglers had a particularly strong season. Every FFM guest landed Marlin on fly, and several anglers finished the week with double-digit catches.

One of the more unexpected highlights this year was the appearance of Wahoo. A handful of anglers had the rare chance to sight cast flies to them, and a few were successfully landed. It was an impressive achievement given how fast and powerful these fish are.

While the offshore fishing produced some incredible moments, the inshore fishing was just as rewarding. When conditions lined up with good light, calm weather, and the right tides, the sight fishing for roosterfish on the flats was exceptional. There were several days when anglers found schools of fish cruising the shallows and willing to chase shrimp and baitfish patterns.

The mangrove areas were also productive throughout the season, with steady action for Corvina and Grouper. They provided a great change of pace from the beach and offshore fishing.
