At the far edge of Norway’s Finnmark coast lies Båtsfjord Brygge, a modern and welcoming lodge set on the harbour in the fishing village of Båtsfjord. Here, where the Barents Sea meets the East Sea, travelling anglers gain access to one of the richest saltwater fisheries in Europe. Vast shoals of giant Cod, Halibut, and Coalfish patrol the surrounding waters, and with the lodge positioned at the end of a sheltered inlet, many of the most productive marks lie only minutes from the dock.
Fishing is from self-drive Smartliner boats fitted with sonar, GPS, and constant contact with the lodge for safety. Guides and rental tackle are available on request, making it straightforward to target a wide range of species. Cod average over 20lb with fish to 70lb landed each season, while Halibut exceeding 200lb are taken close to shore. The variety is immense, from deep channels that hold Haddock, Wolfish, and Plaice to shallower banks alive with Coalfish and other hard-fighting species.
After a day at sea, the lodge provides a warm retreat. Modern fishermen’s cabins overlook the harbour and feature comfortable bedrooms, saunas, hot tubs, and dedicated drying rooms. Dining is a highlight, with menus combining traditional Arctic recipes and contemporary cuisine built around local produce and fresh seafood. Once you arrive in Båtsfjord you’ll need to collect your bags as a representative from Båtsfjord Brygge will meet you at the airport to transfer you to the fishing camp. The journey to the camp is around 10 minutes.

You’ll be fishing the fish-rich waters off Norway’s Finnmark coastline, where the Barents Sea and the East Sea meet. A short boat ride away, the marks and fishing grounds here have a deep history of producing some giant Cod, Halibut and Coalfish and an abundance of other smaller species, such as Haddock, Plaice and Wolfish.

As you have your own boat, you can fish as much as you wish and at certain times of the year, it remains daylight 24hrs a day. Depending on the weather you can fish the open ocean or some of the sheltered spots close to camp, both areas offer some excellent fishing marks and produce good numbers of specimen Cod, Halibut and Coalfish, as well as a range of backup and smaller species.

Båtsfjord Brygge offers anglers the choice of modern fishermen’s cabins in different sizes and modern and cosy hotel rooms.
The cabins vary in size from one bedroom to four bedrooms and cater to groups as small as two and as big as eight. Situated by the harbour, most have a view over the quay.
All cabins feature a fully equipped kitchen with a coffee maker, microwave, oven, hob, freezer, fridge and cooking equipment. In addition, there is a TV with several channels and free WiFi. All bed linen and towels get provided.
The hotel offers double rooms, which can be rented as singles or doubles and was built in 2017 – so they’re modern and well equipped.
The rooms are located on the second floor of the quay, and many of them have a great view of the harbor. All are tastefully furnished, and have a shower, toilet, double bed, sitting area, writing desk, TV with many channels, free Wi-Fi, kettle, coffee and tea. Breakfast is also included each morning.
Båtsfjord Brygge is well known for its fantastic dining experiences and superb cuisine. The kitchen team and waiters will do the utmost to ensure you have the best time you can. Cooking from the bottom of their hearts, they use local produce and serve both traditional and modern cuisine.
The restaurant has an à la carte menu, pizza menu, lunch menu and daily specials menu and is famed for its range of fish dishes, all of which use fish caught in the Barents sea.
The Bryggekanten pub is located on the first floor on the half side overlooking the harbour. Decorated in a maritime style, it features a friendly atmosphere and serves a selection of beers, wines and spirits, as well as a simple menu of food, pizza and snacks. The brewery pub also organises concerts and often features live bands.
Båtsfjord Brygge has a large sauna and shower facilities and two outside Jacuzzi’s which overlook the harbour. After a long day at sea, these features are incredibly popular amongst travelling anglers.
Down by the pier, you will also find an area for filleting fish and a freezer room for you to store your catch if you wish to bring any fish home. Båtsfjord Brygge also leases fishing gear, clothing and a guide on request.
Båtsfjord Brygge is a small, charming, intimate resort in the heart of Båtsfjord village in Northern Norway, situated on the northeastern coast of the Varanger Peninsula, on the rocky coastline of the Barents Sea, not too far from North Cape. The Varangerhalvøya National Park lies in the southern part of the municipality, whilst the famous Makkaur Lighthouse lies along the shoreline, near the mouth of the Båtsfjorden. A destination popular amongst the commercial fishermen of Norway, providing some of the best fishing and fish the country has to offer, it’s also a popular destination for recreational fishermen, attracting travelling rods from all around Europe.
Owned and operated by the couple Monica and Frode, Båtsfjord Brygge is a beautiful resort that has been welcoming anglers since 2013, all of which visit to sample the quality offshore fishing the destination has to offer. It provides a complete facility for anglers and others who want to experience all the joys of the Finnmark coast.
The sea fishing is all based around the area where the Barents Sea and the East Sea meet, an extremely rich area packed with food, which feeds the abundant numbers of giant Cod, Halibut and Coalfish that the destination is famous for. Located at the sheltered end of the Båtsfjord inlet, many of the best fishing spots are found relatively close to the docks, especially as the sea bed slopes away into deeper water.
When staying and fishing at Båtsfjord Brygge, you will soon get immersed in the full beauty and experience of Norway’s Finnmark coast. Situated at the end of the sheltered Båtsfjord inlet, the accommodation is just a stone’s throw away from some of the best fishing spots. Fishing inside Båtsfjord, there are numerous excellent opportunities and Skarbergurrunnen furthest to the east, where the water deepens, is one of the most famous. Around the area’s of Makkaur, Storgrunnsbakken and Korsnesbakken, the bottom is shallower but with some steep drop-offs, which can also be very productive. The location of Makkaur-Sandfjorden and is an excellent place for Halibut with a depth averaging between ten and twenty-five metres and a clean sandy bottom; the fish are very often here in good numbers. Finally, to the west of Båtsfjorden, you will find Kongsfjord, another popular place that produces its fair share of big Cod and Coalfish.
The fishing is all done from one of the six 21-foot Smartliner boats found on site. All the boats are powered by 80 hp four-stroke engines and each is equipped with a Chartplotter, Sonar, GPS and an AIS (Automatic Identification System), which means that the Lodge can follow the boat’s movements on land and easily find them if any problems arise.
Even though Båtsfjord is relatively well sheltered and the boats are very safe, the conditions can turn quickly, so you must follow the forecast and observe the weather when you’re out to sea. It’s essential that if the weather really changes or if the wind and waves kick up, you head back to land.

The main three species that attract travelling rods to Båtsfjord Brygge are the Cod, Halibut and Coalfish, as is the case with most of our camps and lodges in and around the North Cape in Norway.
A shoaling species, moving in large, size-structured aggregations, their diet consists of small fish, molluscs, crustaceans and worms. However, they’re not fussy, and with their colossal bucket mouth, they will consume most things they come across if in a feeding mood. The fish at Båtsfjord Brygge average around 20lb, although much larger specimens to over 60lb and even 70lb are landed every season.
When fishing afloat, the best way to target these fish is with large shads, pirks or dead baits, drifted and fished either on the bottom or through the water column. Even though the Cod aren’t known for their explosive fighting qualities, you’ll certainly know when you’ve hooked one, and the famous ‘Cod Nod’ from a hooked fish is something that all sea anglers can recognise.
A bottom-dwelling fish, found in depths ranging from a few metres to hundreds of metres, in most ecosystems, they are near the top of the marine food chain. A well-equipped predator, feeding on almost anything they can fit in their mouths, from baitfish of all sizes to crabs and squid, they are best targeted with either a large imitation shad or dead bait bumped along the bottom of the sea bed.
Båtsfjord Brygge is well known as a Halibut destination, and some of the bays close to shore offer some excellent fishing, with specimens of over 200lb landed every season.
As well as Cod and Halibut, there’s also plenty of opportunities to target a range of ‘back up species’ or smaller species, like Coalfish, Haddock, Plaice and Wolfish.
*Please note that, by Norwegian law, you’re not allowed to intentionally target and catch Halibut until the 20th of April each year.
One of the popular things about Båtsfjord Brygge is the range of activities on offer for travelling non-anglers or for those who fancy a few hours off from fishing.
The King Crab Safari ventures out to the Barents sea onboard the kabinbåt “MS Ellinor”, travelling past the beautiful “Røbergan” mountains to the lodges crab pots located just offshore. Once out there, you’ll have the opportunity to pull the crab traps and gather a delicious meal which you can take back to shore for the Lodges kitchen to prepare for you. On the safari, you’ll be treated to snacks, hot drinks and provided with a thermal suit and lifejacket, so you’ll be safe and warm.
The Northern Lights cruise travels out from Båtsfjorden in the early evening, escaping the lights in town to search for a chance to see the Northern Lights in all their glory. You’ll be welcomed on board with beverages and served a range of delicious local tapas. With a comfortable heated cabin, delicious food and a cosy, relaxed atmosphere, there’s nowhere better to observe the northern lights from – that is, of course, if you’re lucky enough to see them.
You can cycle from the Lodge to the hiking trail, which takes around fifteen minutes, whilst the hike takes approximately thirty minutes over some relatively easy terrain. Once at the end of the trail, you’ll have a stunning viewpoint over the Barents Sea, and you might even be lucky enough to observe some Eagles and Seals.
The Skrovnesløkta lighthouse is a popular sightseeing spot, it provides excellent views of the sailing entrance to Båtsfjord. There’s also a birdwatching shelter with glass walls, which offers you the perfect chance to observe some wildlife and enjoy a light picnic.

Everybody in the sea fishing community has heard of the island of Sørøya in northern Norway, primarily famed for its incredible Skrei Cod fishing, for some of the most significant specimens on the planet, including the current world record. However, through the years, it has developed into a true ‘all-year-round’ destination, allowing anglers to enjoy some incredible mixed fishing.
We were exceptionally proud to be involved with the Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing Christmas Special to Norway in 2022. Aa-gård fishing camp is situated in Lavangen, in Troms og Finnmark county, in northern Norway. Thanks to the protection from the surrounding mountains and topography, the destination is almost one hundred percent' weatherproof' - whatever the weather, it's possible to fish nearly every day of the year.
Mikkelvik Brygge is protected by the large islands of Rebbenesøya and its smaller neighbour Hersoya. As a result, the coastal waters close to the camp are generally calm, whatever the weather and very few fishing days get lost throughout the season. It's famed for its Skrei Cod fishing, as well as its fantastic Halibut and Plaice fishing.
Rognsund, located in Rognsundet in the southwestern part of Seiland, is Norway's eighth most significant island and the second-largest in Finnmark, behind only Sørøya. A beautiful island destination, the sheltered waters are home to abundant numbers of Cod, Halibut, Wolffish, Ling, Redfish, and some of the very best fishing spots get found within a stone's throw of the camp.
