This Sportquest Holidays exclusive solo traveller week has been carefully designed to allow single anglers the chance to experience a truly memorable bluewater fishing adventure on Rodrigues Island. While our standard trips to this incredible location are based on two anglers sharing flights, accommodation and fishing, this specially curated departure allows you to join a group of like-minded Sportquest customers as a solo guest, with no single supplements or surcharges.
Rodrigues is a remote Indian Ocean island, surrounded by deep drop-offs and violent currents that hold some of the hardest-fighting fish on the planet. This is vertical jigging at its most extreme. Fully guided. A true Sportquest exclusive. Dogtooth Tuna are the main event, smashing jigs on the drop and tearing line with unstoppable dives. Yellowfin crash baits and GTs demolish poppers on the reef edge. Wahoo and Billfish add speed and surprise. Every drift, every drop, every cast brings the chance of something brutal.
You’ll fish from a high-spec vessel, guided by an expert captain and crew who know every contour of the ocean floor. They’ll read the tides, position the boat, and adjust tactics to give you the best possible shot at success. This adventure is built for experienced, physically fit anglers chasing power and rarity in one of the world’s wildest offshore arenas. It’s demanding, it’s rewarding, and it delivers stories that last a lifetime.
When it’s time to recharge, you’ll retreat to Cocotiers Hotel, a peaceful beachfront property where non-anglers are equally at home. Air-conditioned rooms, a swimming pool, and a restaurant serving authentic Mauritian cuisine provide comfort and calm after the intensity of the day.
As with all our Solo Traveller weeks, our dates have been hand-picked in collaboration with our trusted lodge partners to coincide with some of the season’s peak weeks, based on historic catch records and local conditions.

"Rodrigues Island is a true bucket-list destination! It might take three days to travel there, but it was worth every minute of travelling time as the fishing was simply out of this world. The Hawkins bank must be one of the most productive fishing spots found anywhere in the world, it was truly sensational. "
"This is a once in a lifetime trip that you need to do more than once! It was a true adventure and surely one of the best fishing experiences on the planet. When you lower your baits, lures or jigs down to the bottom you generally have no idea what you'll catch next. All you know is whatever takes your bait, will be BIG! "
"I genuinely cannot thank everyone enough, keeping in mind how complex it is to travel to Rodrigues Island everything, from the moment I left home, to the moment I returned ran incredibly smoothly. Words cannot describe just how fantastic and exciting the fishing is either, you need to experience it to believe it. "
"Had a great trip."

"Rodrigues is a wonderful destination for fishing, we caught a wide range of specimens and were very well looked after by Cyril, Jake and Bartholomew the boat crew. The trip out and back to the Hawkins Bank is pretty tough but the fishing is worth it when you get there."

For adventure fishing at its most raw and rewarding, Rodrigues Island awaits.

Rodrigues Island, a volcanic gem in the Indian Ocean, spans just 108 square kilometres and forms part of the Republic of Mauritius. Located about 350 miles east of the main island, it offers remote charm and pristine waters, making it a superb fishing destination and the perfect stop on a two-island adventure combining world-class angling with relaxation in Mauritius.
Surrounded by a rich tropical reef system, the island’s underwater world teems with life. These nutrient-rich waters attract a wide variety of predators, offering exceptional fishing opportunities for travelling anglers. Beyond the reefs lies one of Rodrigues’ most iconic fishing grounds: West Hawkins Bank. Situated approximately 100 nautical miles offshore, this dramatic underwater rise draws in heavy-hitting species like Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, and more, making it one of the most exciting big-game jigging and trolling grounds on the planet.
To the east, the aptly named East Bank offers another productive alternative. Just 50 nautical miles from shore, it’s more accessible for shorter trips and still delivers excellent action. Both banks offer different experiences depending on the season and weather, and our expert crew will help your group choose the best itinerary for your time on the island.
Whether you’re chasing a trophy Dogtooth or looking to experience two Indian Ocean islands in one incredible holiday, Rodrigues is a destination that combines raw adventure with tropical beauty.
The primary fishing technique used around Rodrigues Island is vertical jigging. In this intense, physical method, jigs are dropped to the bottom and worked back up through the water column with sharp, rhythmic movements. If no strike comes, the process is repeated, demanding both stamina and precision from the angler.
Mastering this technique requires understanding how to work different styles of jigs, whether long or short, heavy or light, and how to vary the speed and pitch to provoke aggressive strikes. It’s a skill-based method that can produce spectacular results, especially when targeting species like Dogtooth Tuna, Amberjack, and Grouper. To help you succeed, we’ll ensure you’re equipped with the correct tackle to match the depth, current, and species you’re chasing.
For those moments when a break is needed from the physical demands of jigging, trolling offers a welcome change of pace. This method not only gives anglers a breather but also produces big hits from giant Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, and even Billfish, which patrol these waters in impressive numbers.
Another productive tactic, particularly for Dogtooth Tuna, is bait fishing. This involves slow trolling or drifting with baits deployed at various depths, a method that consistently accounts for some of the largest fish landed around Rodrigues.
Whether you’re an experienced jigging enthusiast or trying it for the first time, Rodrigues delivers a memorable mix of adrenaline, technique, and trophy fish.

Every day on the water, you’ll be joined by a highly experienced captain and two dedicated deckhands who know these Indian Ocean waters intimately. With years of local knowledge behind them, they understand how the tides and conditions influence the fishing and will always put you in the right place at the right time. Whether you’re working inshore drop-offs for hard-hitting Dogtooth Tuna and Giant Trevally or targeting vibrant Coral Trout on the reef, the crew has a wealth of proven marks to keep the action coming. But it’s when the boat pushes out to the legendary Hawkins Bank that the team truly shines, working seamlessly together to maximise every opportunity.
From rigging rods and fine-tuning jigging techniques to ensuring knots are strong and gear is ready for battle, the crew is hands-on and focused. Their mission is simple: to give you the best possible chance of success and help put more fish on the boat.

Jig fishing around Rodrigues Island is intense, physical, and highly rewarding, best suited to anglers with a good level of fitness. The deep-water sessions out on Hawkins Bank demand stamina, as working heavy jigs all day can quickly wear you down. However, when you need a break from the relentless pace, the captain will switch things up with a session of trolling, giving you time to recharge while still keeping the rods active.
Accommodation on the boat is functional rather than luxurious, with space at a premium; it is a serious big-game vessel built for performance. After a full day of battling powerful fish, though, most anglers find that a solid night’s sleep comes easily. Prior experience with jigging is a real advantage, as it’s the primary technique used on this trip. Making every drop count is key, and your deckhands are on hand to guide you, whether you’re slow jigging for stubborn bottom dwellers or speed jigging for aggressive mid-water predators.
