Bonefish & GT Fly Fishing Holiday - Christmas Island Lodge, Kiribati

Set on the remote atoll of Kiritimati, Christmas Island Lodge offers access to some of the finest saltwater fly fishing in the world. Surrounded by miles of white-sand flats and crystal-clear lagoons, it delivers both technical sight fishing and powerful battles in one extraordinary destination. Staying here places anglers at the heart of the action, where the next trophy Bonefish or Giant Trevally is always within reach.

The lagoon’s vast flats teem with Bonefish averaging three to five pounds, with larger fish patrolling the deeper edges. With consistent year-round weather and skilled local guides, every day brings a chance for exceptional sport on fly or light tackle.

Accommodation at Christmas Island Lodge is modern, comfortable, and designed for anglers. Spacious air-conditioned rooms feature en-suite bathrooms and ocean views, while communal areas overlook the lagoon. Dining focuses on fresh seafood and local produce, with chefs creating a mix of international and Pacific flavours. Evenings are relaxed and social, the perfect setting to share stories after a day on the flats.

"Ever since I'd seen the videos of the huge GT's from Christmas Island, it had been a place I'd always wanted to visit and after a couple of years of saving, I made it a reality. Although I didn't manage any of the true giants, I ticked the species off my list and enjoyed a fantastic holiday. Everything exceeded my expectations and I'd like to thank you for your service. Now it's just a case of where to travel to next... "

Accommodation

Christmas Island Lodge hosts a maximum of 12 anglers per week in private accommodation, providing a relaxed, intimate atmosphere – it’s known for its hospitality and welcoming smiles, ensuring all guests feel at home in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

It offers six traditional bungalows constructed of coral stone and thatch roofs, each with two private suites with a fully stocked fridge, air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom with shower, and excellent Starlink wifi, among many other amenities. They are widely considered the most comfortable accommodations on the island after being recently renovated and remodelled.

Outside the bungalows is an expansive open-air lounge where you can enjoy your evening meal, cocktails and appetisers while recounting stories from your fishing day.

One of the most popular things about Christmas Island Lodge is its prime location. Strategically situated on a 20-acre beachside site, it offers immediate access to the surf and is just a short drive away from the private ‘back-of-the-lagoon’, which only lodge guests can enjoy.

These things ensure that you will arrive first at the most remote corners of the inner lagoon and be the last anglers on the water at the end of each fishing day. The extra distance from the hubbub of London or Paris on the island’s western end also means you will spend less time travelling to the most desirable fishing locations, including the famed Korean Wreck and the Huff Dam.

FOOD & DRINK

With limited deliveries, Christmas Island Lodge utilises lots of freshly caught seafood and items flown in from Hawaii, blending standard fare with island favourites.

Coffee and breakfast are served around 5.30am each morning, and lunch is served shoreside, typically consisting of sandwiches, crisps and nuts, with plenty of cold water, soda and beer, depending on your preference.

After your fishing day, you can enjoy a range of appetisers, such as sushi, ceviche, and empanadas, before your evening meal is served around 6.30pm – traditionally consisting of a range of vegetables and meats, including fish, chicken, beef and pork. Normally, a pig roast will cap off the end of each week at the lodge.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES

The reason to make the trip to Christmas Island is to fish. There is minimal infrastructure on the island and minimal non-angling activities. Aside from wading the flats, guests who don’t fish can enjoy walking the beach, snorkelling and birdwatching.

First Class Fly Fishing

As it’s known, Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, is a Pacific Ocean coral atoll in the northern line islands, situated 2,156 kilometres from Honolulu. The island has the most significant land area of any coral atoll globally, measuring 388 square kilometres; it also has a stunning blue water lagoon of roughly the same size. As a country, it encompasses an impressive 33 Pacific atolls and islands; however, on a map, it’s nothing more than a mere dot surrounded by thousands of miles of ocean. It is this remoteness that has made the island what it is today.

Established as one of the first saltwater fly fisheries globally, many modern techniques and fly patterns were forged on its iconic flats, and it’s now known as one of the most consistent wade fisheries on the planet. This unique natural masterpiece combines all the elements critical to saltwater fly fishing success; endless hard sand flats, consistent all-year-round weather and remarkable numbers of fish. It offers spectacular sport with vast numbers of Bonefish, abundant populations of beautiful coloured Triggerfish and groups of substantial Giant Trevally. The island offers some of the best and most unspoilt saltwater fly fishing on the planet, and it remains one of the world’s finest destinations for beginners and experts alike.

This trip is also available as a hosted tour exclusive for Sportquest Holidays customers and is ideal for solo anglers, pairs of friends and even small groups. You can see the hosted tour here.

Fishing Christmas Island

Christmas Island Lodge is one of the world’s premier saltwater fly fishing destinations, set on the edge of a vast lagoon that has shaped the very foundations of modern flats fishing. Remote, consistent and prolific, it is a holiday destination for anglers who want to combine world-class fishing with a true island escape.

Bonefish are the main draw, cruising the hard white sand flats in extraordinary numbers. Sight fishing here is technical and visual, with long blistering runs across the backing when a fish commits. Giant Trevally are the other great prize. Some exceed 100lb, all strike with shocking power, and they have become the defining challenge of Christmas Island. Add Triggerfish, Milkfish and a variety of reef species, and every tide brings fresh opportunity.

Days begin with a ride in a traditional outrigger across the lagoon before wading the flats with expert local guides, fishing two anglers per guide for maximum attention. The water is clear, the shots are close and every cast demands focus.

At day’s end, Christmas Island Lodge provides a comfortable and convenient base just steps from the action. With space for a maximum of 12 rods per week, guests enjoy private rooms, freshly prepared meals and a relaxed communal atmosphere, perfectly matched to the island’s setting.

Book your holiday with Sportquest Holidays and experience Christmas Island Lodge, where Bonefish, GTs and remote flats combine to define one of the world’s most consistent saltwater fisheries.

Fishing Guides

Christmas Island Fishing Lodge utilises several unique, locally crafted, outrigger-style transfer boats; these boats are fun and reliable, and anglers are transferred to and from the flats daily. All the fishing on the island, for the Bonefish and Giant Trevally, is performed whilst wading the endless shallow flats. Most of the wading is straightforward, with the bottom consisting of solid white sand. However, there are odd occasions when you may need to navigate some coral outcroppings, rock shelves or deeper channels, but overall, the wading is very easy.

Each day the fishing on Christmas Island will see two anglers with one guide on a two-to-one basis. The guides are world-class professionals who have amassed considerable hard-earned experience regarding all facets of fly fishing at this remote atoll destination. They’re highly skilled in pursuing all the species the island has to offer and have been fishing and guiding the waters for many years. They know which flat to be on, in what weather conditions and the state of the tide. They are some of the atoll’s most skilled and passionate workers and love nothing more than to share their knowledge with you; rest assured, they will go the extra mile in search of your fish of a lifetime.

The Best Time For Fishing At Christmas Island Lodge

Located south of Hawaii, Christmas Island is only 200 kilometres north of the equator, meaning it has exceptionally stable weather conditions and consistent fishing all year round. Angler traffic is heaviest during the winter and spring months, but this has more to do with anglers looking to get away at this time than the fishing being productive. One of the most productive seasons can be Fall, a period often overlooked and one where some of the best fishing spots can go untouched. As the summer months come to a close, September starts to cool off, and weather patterns become more consistent, allowing feeding patterns of Bonefish, Giant Trevally, and other species to become more predictable as a result of cooler water temperatures.

Another thing to consider is the various moon phases of the month. Anglers looking for a well-balanced, productive time to fish the flats, or want to focus on Bonefish, should book during quarter moon cycles that provide neap cycle tides and long sweet spots of moderate water depth on the flats. Anglers looking for great opportunities for Giant Trevally and blue water species should look toward the full moon and new moon periods of the month. These times provide the most significant alignment of the earth, moon and sun and generate the most considerable tide swings. Hybrid weeks with either a full or new moon towards the beginning or end of a week provide good opportunities for both.
