Location

Secure Lodge is located in an Indigenous Territory and a National Park where the Golden Dorado catch and release fly fishing activity is solely allowed. The landscape is incredibly wild and remote. The rivers where we fish are the headwaters of some Amazon tributaries, and its gin-clear currents run through jungle and mountains. This is one of the most pristine environments of the world to combine the stunning wildlife and amazing fishing this will be a holiday you talk about for a very long time.
Fishing
You will fish the productive waters of the Secure River above and below the lodge. The water upstream of the lodge is rugged and incredibly scenic with mossy cliffs and deep green pools and is known to have the region’s best Pacu fishing in addition to great Golden Dorado fly fishing. This upper beat is accessed by traditional pole-pushed dugouts. The water downstream is broader with more woody debris. It offers good wade fishing and good boat fishing for large Golden Dorado and is accessed by motorised dugouts. Secure Lodge also offers backpacking-style trips to the upper reaches of the system. Here you will fish the upper reaches of the Secure system as well as optional tributaries accessing more than 25 km of pristine water. Fishing will be casting large baitfish patterns with 8 or 9£ single-handed rods. In the upper sections, you will be fishing clear pools, rapids and deep water pockets often to fish you can see. In the lower section of the river, it is all about the structure, you will be casting tight to dead trees and sunken structure in the river as these are perfect ambush points for Golden Dorado fly fishing.

Guides
Fishing each day is based on two anglers per motorised dugout with an Argentine fly fishing guide as well as one or two native boatmen. Each day you rotate between the sections of the river. There are three main areas called upper, middle and lower. Each offers different styles of fishing. Along with this, there is the 2-day camping section on the upper Secure and also excursions up the two main creeks subject to water level.

Other activities
Although Secure Lodge is for anglers if you so wished to take a day off from the fishing, our local guides for a tip will only be more than happy to show you around their wonderful jungle with is amazing wildlife.

Questions & Answers

Where is the lodge?

Sécure lodge is situated in the Sécure River headwaters, which is the perfect location to run our annual Hosted Golden Dorado fishing trips.

Where will I fish?

You will fish the productive waters of the Secure River above and below the camp. The water upstream of the camp is rugged and incredibly scenic with mossy cliffs and deep green pools and is known to have the region’s best Pacu fishing in addition to great Golden Dorado fishing. This upper beat is accessed by traditional pole-pushed dugouts. The water downstream is broader with more woody debris. It offers good wade fishing and good boat fishing for large Golden Dorado and is accessed by motorised dugouts. Like the other two camps, Secure also offers backpacking-style trips to the upper reaches of the system.

You will fish the upper reaches of the Secure system as well as optional tributaries accessing more than 25 km of pristine water out of the main camp. Secure anglers will fish two anglers per motorised dugout with an Argentine fly fishing guide as well as one or two native boatmen. They will fish beats both up and downstream of the Camp.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

From the camp, you can be fishing within minutes or if you are venturing further up or down the river you can travel for more than an hour to the fishing grounds. Having said that, the fishing is well worth the wait and travel time.

What fish will I catch?

This trip is based on targeting Golden Dorado but there are opportunities to catch other species such as Amazon Pacu and Catfish.

How many fish will I catch?

The amount of fish you will catch will depend on a few factors. One is angling experience, the other is the water conditions. We plan these trips at the peak time of year so if the rivers are in perfect condition a competent angler can expect to catch 3 to 4 fish per day.

How will I fish?

You will fish using both sight casting and blind casting in deeper pools or coloured water areas. It involves casting large baitfish pattern flies across the river at a slightly downstream angle and then stripping the fly back. The takes and explosion from the Golden Dorado is something to be experienced.

Do the guides speak English?

All the guides speak some English, many of the guides are Argentinian. The local boatmen will only speak basic English.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This is a great trip for any fly anglers wanting to target and catch Golden Dorado and be completely surrounded by stunning scenery.

What skill level is required?

Although beginner fly anglers are welcome at the lodge and on our hosted Golden Dorado fishing trips, everyone would achieve better results if they can cast to a basic level. Casting big flies quickly and safely will allow you to gain much more from your holiday. Often it does not require long casts which helps.

How physically demanding is this trip?

There is a fair amount of walking, hiking and wading on this hosted Golden Dorado fishing trip, plus we are fishing in the jungle so expect heat and high humidity. Customers need to have a reasonable amount of fitness for the weeks trip.

When is the best time to go?

We run our hosted Golden Dorado fishing trips in one of the peak periods the month of August which is the month that the Tsimane videos where filmed.

How will I get there?

You will fly to Santa Cruz and from there you fly to an airstrip in the little village of Asunta, where it is common for many members of the community to come out and have a look at the new arrivals. From there it is about a 15-minute boat ride upstream to the deluxe six-person tent camp.

What is the accommodation like?

The camp has been carved out of the jungle and built using a combination of site-milled hardwood and material shipped up the river and is best described as both rustic and elegant. The camp features a handsome hardwood Camp with an open bar, Wi-Fi and delicious meals paired with excellent Argentine wines. Customers stay in spacious double occupancy safari-style tents with comfortable beds, full linens and private bathrooms with showers. The camp is also equipped with generator power with battery back-up, on demand hot water and wireless internet service.

What is the food like?

The camp has a main building where anglers enjoy meals and cocktails The chefs at Secure Camp are from Argentina and serve a variety of local and Argentine meals prepared with a wonderful flair.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

Tackle is not provided. We do have loaner tackle just in case anyone’s luggage gets lost or rods break. The lodge does have a selection of flies for sale.

Is Internet and phone signal available?

There is free WiFi but do not expect to share photos or videos over the internet as the strength is not good enough. It is good enough to send and receive just text e-mails.

Are there other activities available?

The fishing camp does cater for anglers, however if you so wished to take a day off from the fishing, our local guides for a tip will only be more than happy to show you around their wonderful jungle with is amazing wildlife.

How much does it cost?
