Suindá Lodge Argentina Golden Dorado On The Fly

Freshwater Grand Slam: Fly Fishing, Suindá Lodge, Argentina

This is Suindá Lodge on the upper Paraná River, home to some of the largest Golden Dorado in South America. The river marks the border between Argentina and Paraguay. Fast runs, rock gardens, and sandbank zones create perfect ambush points for Dorado hunting Sabalo baitfish.

Fish average 5 to 10lb, but this stretch is known for trophies over 30lb. Add in hard-fighting Pacú and surface-smashing Pira Pita, and you have a real shot at the freshwater “grand slam”.
Limited to just eight rods, Suindá is a first-class program for those searching for exciting freshwater fly-fishing, technical and rewarding. Fishing is two anglers per specialised guide, from custom skiffs designed to reach both main-river power water and shallow back channels. Sight fish the crystal-clear waters, and when conditions allow, wade sandbars for topwater sport, watching Dorado erupt through the surface.

Suindá Lodge itself is set high above the river with sweeping views of the Paraná and its jungle banks. Take a dip in the plunge pool, a drink at the bar, and browse the fully stocked fly shop, or utilise the fleet of equipment available to hire free of charge. Evenings centre on fine Argentine beef, traditional asados, and wines, shared around the dining table as stories flow.

Sportquest handle every detail. You focus on the fish.

If you want explosive Dorado, the challenge of Pacú and Pira Pita, and the raw power of the Paraná, Suindá Lodge is your next big trip.

Fishing The Paraná River

Suindá Lodge is a Golden Dorado anglers dream, strategically located near the town of Itatí in the province of Corrientes in Argentina; it offers travelling anglers the chance to fish the most productive sections of the Upper Paraná River. The river marks the border between Argentina and Paraguay and is a clear-water fishery that consistently produces good numbers of specimen fish. Its fast-flowing runs that course over beautiful rock gardens and its sandbank zones are the perfect habitats for these colossal predators as they hunt the Sabolo baitfish congregating in big schools.

Located on the southern bank, on the Argentinian side of the Paraná River, perched on a high bluff, offering soaring views of the sprawling river and its natural surroundings, the lodge is comfortable, well-appointed, and beautifully constructed. It serves as the central hub and resting place for all anglers visiting to target some of the largest Dorado found anywhere in South America, as well as Pacú and hard-charging Pira Pítá – the two other species that make up the freshwater’ grand slam’.

Catering for eight rods, Suindá is a first-class program for those searching for exciting freshwater fly fishing opportunities combined with some of the most technical yet rewarding fishing out there; it’s also a destination where double-figure Dorados are a possibility all season long.

Freshwater’s Grandest Slam

The fishing at Suindá takes place on the mighty Paraná River, or the “Río Paraná” as it’s also known, which is the second longest river in South America, behind only the Amazon. This waterway is home to abundant numbers of specimen Golden Dorado, as well as Pirá Pitá and Pacu.

Some of the best fishing gets found on a stretch where the river borders Paraguay and here, the banks are flanked by jungle expanses on both edges. These structurally rich shorelines are littered with sunken logs and boulders, making them the perfect places for the Golden Dorado to sit, waiting to ambush the unsuspecting Sabolo baitfish. Drifting in the lodge’s custom, comfort-enhanced skiffs and casting flies close to the snags is the name of the game.

As well as this, the river also offers anglers some fantastic sight fishing opportunities, drifting over vast sand bars and wetting a fly in its crystal clear water, making for some explosive topwater takes. When conditions allow, it’s possible to leave the confines of the boat and wade these shallow bars.

The Golden Dorado in the river average between 5lb to 10lb, but fish pushing 30lb+ are not unusual. As well as Dorado, it’s also possible to target Pirá Pitá and Pacu and to catch all three of these fish in one day is classed by the lodge as a freshwater ‘grand slam’.

Daily Fishing Programme

Every day at Suindá begins with a fresh, hot breakfast prepared from local ingredients and eggs from the lodge’s chickens. After eating, anglers take the short 30m walk to the boat dock to meet up with their guide for the day. Typically the boats will set off around 6.00 am; however, this can sometimes vary depending on the conditions.

Note: The guides at Suindá are professional and specialise in fly fishing; they’ve been navigating the waters of the incredible Paraná River and fishing for Golden Dorado for more years than most. We strongly recommend taking their advice to get the most out of your holiday.

After spending the morning on the water pursuing Dorado, Pacú, and Pira Pítá, you will return to the lodge for lunch prepared by the lodge’s head chef. The midday heat is the perfect opportunity to take a dip in the pool with a cold beer in hand or to take a siesta to prepare for the evening session, which typically starts around 4.30 pm. The evening of fishing generally runs until dark before everyone returns to the lodge for dinner. Suindá runs an À la carte menu with delicious indigenous and international cuisine. After eating, it’s a case of drinks at the bar, with the chance to discuss the days fishing and the ‘ones that got away’.

Golden Dorado Tackle

Golden Dorados are powerful, explosive predators; when fishing for them, you need the correct tackle. We recommend bringing 2 or 3 different single-handed setups, a 9-ft 8-wt or 9-wt rod to approach Dorado and a 9-ft. 6 or even 7-wt for the Pacu and Pirá Pitá. These need to be matched with a good quality reel with a robust and smooth drag with the capacity to take a fly line and 100 yards of 50lb backing.

Due to the weather, fly lines should all be ‘tropical’, and weight forward floating, with Redfish, Tarpon and Bonefish tapers all suitable. These will be used to fish streamers and topwater flies. Also, due to the nature of the fishing, it’s worth “over-lining” your rods, as it makes it easier to load the rod with less line, and the heavier line makes casting larger flies easier. Leaders should be serious enough to turn over big flies, and spools of mono should include 15lb to 70lb breaking strains. For floating lines, you should have 9ft long tapered leaders. For sinking lines 5-6ft of 30 to 50 lb depending on the kind of structure, you will be fishing. The lodge provides a wide selection of fly patterns, but we recommend you bring a good supply of your own to get you through your stay.

The primary fly fishing technique used is double-hauling; this is easy to learn and will pay dividends. It’s important to remember that your streamer must be stripped from the moment it touches the surface of the water. Fast-stripping of the fly is the key to more fish in the boat.
