Villa Maria Lodge Fishing Report 28th – 7th March 2025

As expected, the rains finally arrived in the Rio Grande basin this week. It’s been a bit of a challenge, with winds coming from all directions and a few days of heavy rainfall. Fortunately, the rain came towards the end of the week, so we didn’t see any major changes in the river level—just a couple of inches and some turbidity, but nothing that significantly impacted the fishing.

The river temperature is still low, so just like last week, we had to use heavier sinking tips than usual for this time of year. Despite the cooler water, we stuck with small flies, except during low-light conditions, when larger silhouette patterns performed best.

The fishing remained similar to last week—challenging at times, but still rewarding. In total, we landed 5 fish under 10 lbs and 18 fish over 15 lbs. The real highlight came when Pete and Stuart both landed two 20 lb sea-run brown trout—a huge accomplishment! Congrats to both of them!

Looking ahead, no major rainstorms are forecasted, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for runoff from the upper river and its tributaries. There may be some changes, but we don’t expect the river level to rise more than 20-30 cm.

See you on the water next week!
