Mr. Toshi kicked off his week of Tigerfish fishing on the Ruhudji River with a bang. On the first session up on the middle beat, he hooked into a solid Tigerfish within minutes.
The fight was intense, and Toshi worked the fish all the way to the boat. But then came a rookie error—he stripped the line a bit too far. When the fish bolted again, it looped around the engine and snapped the rod tip clean into three pieces.
Still, the 12lb Tigerfish was landed, and as Toshi grinned for the photo, his words summed it up: “I got him—stuff the rod!”

As the evening session began winding down on day one, X told his guide he’d never landed a fish at the very end of a session. Moments later, he was tight with a hard-jumping Tigerfish that fought all the way to the net.
Feeling bold, he joked he’d never caught two Tigers in an evening either. Within seconds, he was on again—this time with a fish that ripped line and went airborne multiple times. It was a fin-perfect 10lb Tigerfish to wrap up an unforgettable first day.

Success in Tigerfish fishing on the Ruhudji River often comes down to readiness. These fish will ignore your fly for hours—then suddenly smash it right at the boat when you least expect it.
John was ready. Fishing a Puma fly near structure, he stripped it off a branch into a swirling pocket of current—bam! A Tigerfish exploded on the fly. With no hesitation, he stayed tight and kept stripping, landing a pristine 12lb fish thanks to a textbook hook set.
This week’s top fly was simple, natural, and highly effective – the Tan/Olive Brush Fly:
- Full olive tail and body
- Slender tan brush head
Perfect for mimicking baitfish and ideal in low, clear water. If you’re prepping for a trip, make sure to tie up a few of these.
