PEACOCK BASS Description

Unmistakable in its appearance, this beautiful fish comes in many guises with the most common being a fish with a reddy brown coloured body. This body is broken up with vertical bars or spots which come in a wide array of colours. These fish have a spot on their tail which is said to be where they get their name Peacock from with the resemblance to the bird of the same name. The speckled Peacock Bass is the largest species and can grow up to 1m in length.

These fish can reach sizes in excess of 20lb but in many South American waters, the average size that are caught are around 6lb.

Where to catch PEACOCK BASS

The Peacock bass can be found in South America, North America, Europe and Asia.  The main areas that are fished are the Southern American freshwater stretches such as the Amazon Basin in Brazil and the Panamanian rivers.

PEACOCK BASS Fishing methods

The Peacock Bass is a ferocious predator in the waters it inhabits. Methods that are used to catch this fast and hard-hitting species include fly fishing from either boat or bank. This method of fly fishing accounts for many Peacock Bass. When the fly is drawn past the fish it entices them to feed, resulting in a hook up as the fish hits the fly.

Another way to fish for the Peacock Bass is by casting artificial lures from either bank or boat. These lures when fished either on the surface or sub-surface will create a disturbance in the water. Tapping into the predatory instinct of these fish and therefore resulting in some truly amazing takes.
