With just a few weeks to go until our Sportquest Hosted trip to Horstad Gård Lodge on the Aelva River in Norway, we caught up with our good friend and the lodge manager William, to find out a little more about how the season has started so far.
The Aelva (or the Åbjøra as it’s also known) is a fly-fishing gem and is widely considered one of the country’s best-kept secrets. Privately owned and previously off-limits to the public (until recently), the system has been ranked as one of the top Salmon Rivers, boasting one of the highest catch rates per angler, a trend that, so far this year, looks sure to continue.
During the opening few weeks of the season, over 90 fish were landed, including a mammoth 40+ fish the week before last, across just a small handful of rods (Only four in total and friends of Horstad Gård). Upholding and keeping the exclusive and personalised nature of both the lodge and waterway.
The largest Salmon landed so far has been a chrome specimen, which weighed in at 9kg and measured 96cm. Meanwhile, 10 fish over 6kg (14lb+) have graced the banks. However, these numbers look sure to be topped in the coming weeks, as the activity on the fish camera, located in the home pool at the lodge, has been incredible, both in terms of numbers and size. Earlier this week, fish to well over 30lb were observed passing through.
William left us with these comments:
“We had 41 fish last week across four guests, with only a little guided fishing. The run is insane now… Just check out the cameras.”
Things are really starting to heat up, and we have our fingers crossed that they continue in the same vein for our exclusive sold-out hosted trip during the first week of August.
