Alphonse Island Fly Fishing Report 31th October – 7th November 2020

With the wheels finally starting to turn we were able to welcome another full group of anglers this week. Some of which are long-standing friends and guests who have all been counting down the days to set foot back in the tropical beauty of Alphonse Island. Our new guests were greeted by fast-moving spring tides, allowing them to access the surf zone and experience the classic Alphonse “bonefish drop”. This is a daily spectacle where hordes of bonefish can be seen travelling across the flats. A truly remarkable spectacle to witness.

Matthew Born decided to test his skills even more than normal by introducing the 4 wt challenge. Fishing with a 4 wt on the flats is not often done. However, Matt went ahead to prove that it is possible by landing a variety of fish on the small rod including a 55 cm bonefish and a beautiful yellowmargin triggerfish. Nick Bowles was not to be outdone. He closed his week off with an incredible surf caught 93 cm GT and a trigger slam.

Some of our guests this week were new to fly fishing and did not disappoint. Alan Stanton on his first-ever saltwater fly fishing trip, closed his week off with an impressive 86 cm GT caught on ice white sand and a fin perfect moustache triggerfish. Long-time friend and boat partner David De Kock followed right behind by landing his own moustache triggerfish and waited until extra time for the last cast of the last day to land his first ever GT on the fly, stretching the measuring tape to 65 cm.

Josh Worthington was our only angler this week to manage to convince the elusive and gorgeous Indo-Pacific permit to eat his fly. He also went on to land an impressive surf caught GT of 73 cm. Besides all the notable catches mentioned above, our other guests enjoyed a multitude of interesting species and also some absolutely incredible bonefishing. Closing the week off with just over 200 bonefish, it was a week of as many as 30+ bonefish a day.

With some remarkable diversity and incredible classic flats fishing experiences. All our guests were treated to unbelievable and world-class flats fishing. With another full house of fishing guests this week, we look forward to seeing what Alphonse has in store.

Tight lines,
