The opening 3 weeks of our 2026 season has reminded us why June has become one of our favorite times of the entire season to be here at ATA Lodge! The river was full of aggressive trout, and hungry grayling looking up to a dry fly; the scenery was spectacular, and there wasn’t a shortage of smiling anglers returning to the dock each evening with stories of unforgettable fish.

This first week brought together a great mix of longtime returning guests and the next 2 week saw several first-time visitors also join the fun. Everyone quickly discovered why the early season has developed such a loyal following. Friendships were renewed, new memories were made, and every day on the water offered something special.

The weather certainly kept us on our toes. As is often the case in Alaska, we experienced a little bit of everything—cool mornings, sunshine, scattered showers, and a few windy afternoons. Fortunately, none of it slowed down the fishing. Once conditions settled, the river really turned on, rewarding anglers with consistent action from start to finish.
Rainbow trout were undoubtedly the stars of the month. Fish over 20 inches were caught daily, with numerous trout stretching into the mid-20-inch range. Several truly exceptional fish tested anglers and tackle alike, making blistering runs and reminding everyone why Alagnak rainbows have earned their legendary reputation.

We saw multiple giants ranging from 27 inches all the way up to Peggy’s incredible 30-inch trout, a fish that will be talked about for years to come. A few others managed to throw the hook or find the nearest log, leaving behind stories that will undoubtedly grow a little bigger before next season.
June continues to offer some of the finest rainbow trout fishing of the entire year. Fresh from spawning, these trout remain concentrated in our section of river while feeding heavily on the annual salmon smolt migration.

Young salmon moving toward the sea create an abundant food source, and the trout take full advantage of the opportunity. With no large numbers of spawning salmon yet occupying the river, the biggest rainbows are able to claim the best feeding lanes and aggressively intercept anything that resembles an easy meal.
Because these fish have seen very little angling pressure since last fall, they’re often willing to reward a well-presented fly with explosive takes. Reading the water carefully, making accurate presentations, and covering productive holding water continue to produce some of the largest trout of the season.

While rainbow trout receive much of the attention, they certainly aren’t the only reason anglers love June at ATA Lodge.
Our Arctic grayling fishery continues to impress. These beautiful fish eagerly rose to dry flies throughout the week, providing steady action on light tackle. Many guests commented that they had never experienced grayling fishing quite like this, with fish pushing the 18 to 20-inch mark and plenty of opportunities for fast-paced action.

Lake trout are also regularly caught during the opening weeks. Like the rainbows, they are keying on migrating smolt and move into the river to take advantage of the seasonal food supply. Anglers caught some great specimens of these fish and were rewarded with several memorable catches throughout the week.
Wildlife sightings were just as impressive as the fishing. Guests encountered coastal grizzlies along the riverbanks, eagles seemed to be everywhere, and we had multiple moose sightings including cows with calves. We also witnessed some caribou crossing the river, along with rare and exciting encounters with a wolverine and even a couple lynx—reminders that this truly is one of the wildest places left in Alaska.

Of course, a great day on the river deserves a great evening back at the lodge. After long days chasing fish, guests returned to outstanding meals, comfortable accommodations, and plenty of laughter while reliving the day’s highlights and planning tomorrow’s adventure.
As we move in to late June, we began watching for the first returning sockeye salmon. Their arrival marks another exciting transition in the season and signals the beginning of one of Bristol Bay’s most remarkable natural events.

If opening week is any indication, we’re in for another outstanding summer on the Alagnak River.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to kick off the 2026 season. We truly appreciate your continued support and look forward to welcoming many more anglers throughout the summer.
