Kau Tapen Fishing Report 4th – 11th January 2025

We kicked off our 40th anniversary season by fishing the mighty Rio Grande, welcoming a group of 8 anglers from Argentina for 5 days of fishing on both the Rio Grande and Menendez River.

Both rivers are currently running low, similar to recent seasons. The weather was mostly sunny, with clear skies and warm temperatures, which were fortunately followed by cold nights, helping to maintain optimal water temperatures. Fish were holding in the main spots, mostly colored fish that likely entered the system in early November. However, as the week progressed, we began to see fresh fish running, stirring up the pools as they competed for their positions.

With the fish running, we opted for a strategy of covering water with light tackle. We started the pools with mandatory floating lines, using Sunray Shadow flies or small, light nymphs, targeting fish higher in the water column. This approach led to some excellent takes, as we chased the runs of fresh fish moving up both the Grande and Menendez rivers.

All anglers hooked fish, with sizes ranging from 4 to 17.5 lbs. As usual, the magic hour revealed where the fish were holding, providing us with some memorable fishing moments.
