At our Salmon fishing lodges in Iceland, the season has started strong, with good numbers of fish landed over the opening few weeks, including some of trophy size. We have our fingers firmly crossed that the rest of the season carries on in the same vein. Here’s a snapshot of how the first few weeks of the season have played out at a selection of our lodges in this wonderful country.

West Ranga River Iceland
The season at West Ranga Lodge in Iceland is off to a strong start. The first Salmon was landed from Borg Pool, with twelve fish caught on opening day alone. Since then, the river has continued to produce, with over one hundred fish landed so far. Among the highlights are a stunning specimen from the Rangárflúðir Pool and a 96cm fish landed just this week from the Lower Falls, clear signs that the season is shaping up beautifully. If you’re wanting to catch your first Atlantic Salmon, then West Ranga will probably offer you the best chance in the country. Regularly topping the charts as the most productive river in Iceland, it finished the season last year with over 4,500 Salmon.

Midfjardara River Iceland
Rods on the Midfjardara River in Iceland always prove incredibly popular, and last week was a fine example of why, as it threw up a stunning 103cm bar of silver. The fish was landed on a Hitch fly after a long fight in rapids and is the largest fish from the lodge so far this season. According to some length-to-weight charts, this would have put the fish in the region of between 25-30lb. The Midfjardara is known as the ‘Queen Of The Rivers’ and offers a very personalised experience, with only 6 rods and an incredible amount of water to wet a fly. Like the West Ranga, it’s also very productive, responsible for an average of over 3,100 fish per season and regularly amongst the top five waterways in the country.

Blanda River Iceland
On the Blanda River, at Long Valley Lodge, the overall fishing has been spectacular, especially for the Trout and Char. There have also been some lovely Salmon caught, and our good friends and partners at the lodge have informed us that there are many more on the move, which is incredibly exciting as we head towards the prime summer weeks. The Blanda is a unique fishery and offers the best of almost everything the country has to offer – Salmon, Brown Trout, Sea Trout and Char. If you’re thinking of taking a trip next year, 2026 is classified as an MWS year (multi-winter Salmon year), which occurs every two years, providing you with the best opportunity to catch a 20lb+ Salmon.

Vatnsdalsá River Iceland
Fishing on the Vatnsdalsá River opened on June 20th, and the fish were distributed throughout the river and all its pools. There were eleven nice fish caught on the opening day amongst a handful of rods, along with some beautiful Trout. Since then, over the past couple of weeks, more than thirty additional Salmon have been landed, with a third of these weighing over 7kg, including two top fish that weighed up to 9.4kg. If you’re looking to target some of the biggest Icelandic Salmon, the Vatnsdalsá is one of the best rivers. On average, the river throws up between 700 and 1,200 Salmon in a three-month season.
