Battle Hill Lodge opened its doors yesterday, marking the official start of our fall fishing season, and the river wasted no time showing what it had in store. The first afternoon session delivered exactly the kind of excitement we’d been hoping for. With just seven anglers on the water for a half-day, the group managed to land 12 fish in only four hours—a fantastic return that set the tone for what promises to be an excellent season.
The largest fish of the day stretched the tape at 74 cm (30 inches), a proper trophy and a reminder of the quality that these rivers consistently produce. Catches were a mix of bright, sea-liced sea trout straight from the ocean and others that had clearly been in the system for a few weeks, showing a healthy spread of fish throughout the run. That variety is always a promising sign, as it suggests strong movement from the tide as well as good holding water upstream.

What made the day even more special was the fact that all three rivers—Vatnamót, Fossálar, and Geirlandsá—produced fish. Few things are as encouraging at the start of a season as seeing each system come alive simultaneously. The Vatnamót yielded several solid fish in quick succession, Fossálar gave up a beautifully fresh hen still glistening with sea lice, and the Geirlandsá added its share of action to round out a memorable opening day.
Conditions on the water were near perfect: steady flows, mild weather, and just enough cloud cover to keep the fish comfortable. Anglers reported strong, aggressive takes, with several fish lost after spirited fights—proof that even those not landed left their mark in adrenaline and excitement.
For many of the anglers, yesterday was more than just a successful outing; it was a chance to reconnect with these storied rivers and witness firsthand the promise of the fall run. Spirits are high, and there’s already talk around the lodge about what the next tides might bring. If opening day is any indication, we are in for a season to remember.
