Top Destinations To Target Tigerfish On The Fly

Few freshwater predators command attention like the Tigerfish. Native to the river systems of Africa, particularly the vast Congo Basin, these fish have earned a reputation built on speed, aggression and raw power. Known scientifically as Hydrocynus vittatus, the name translates to “striped water dog,” a fitting description for a species that hunts with relentless intent.

Often compared to the South American Piranha, though belonging to an entirely different family, Tigerfish are defined by interlocking razor-sharp teeth and a streamlined, muscular frame built for pursuit. They are visual hunters, explosive on the take and unforgiving in the fight, making them one of Africa’s most formidable freshwater game fish.

Tigerfish are apex freshwater predators. Smaller fish often hunt in coordinated schools, driving bait into tight formations, while larger specimens become solitary and highly territorial. Their diet is opportunistic, though they favour other fish such as gobies, carp and catfish. Their aggression is so pronounced that Tigerfish were the first freshwater species recorded leaping from the water to snatch birds from the air.

Several species exist across Africa, with the legendary Goliath Tigerfish reaching extraordinary proportions. While fish over 100lb have been documented in central Africa, the more commonly targeted species average around 8lb, with double-figure specimens regularly encountered. What they lack in size compared to their giant cousin, they more than compensate for in speed, teeth and ferocity.

Despite their fearsome appearance, Tigerfish are vital to the river systems they inhabit, supporting both ecological balance and local economies through sustainable tourism. For travelling anglers, particularly those pursuing freshwater predators on the fly or lure, Tigerfish have become a true bucket-list species.

Southwestern Tanzania has earned its reputation as the benchmark destination for trophy Tigerfish. On the remote Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers, anglers regularly encounter fish in the 10lb to 25lb range, with specimens over 20lb landed each season. These are mature, powerful fish that hit with violence and fight with speed, making them some of the most exhilarating freshwater predators available to the travelling fly angler.

The programme is strictly fly-only and operated in partnership with African Waters, pioneers of this fishery. With exclusive access to more than 120 kilometres of pristine river and strictly limited rod numbers, pressure remains low and quality consistently high. Anglers fish from purpose-built aluminium boats, casting large streamers into timber, drop-offs and current seams where Tigerfish ambush prey. Groups rotate between Dhala Camp on the Mnyera and Samaki Camp on the Ruhudji, ensuring equal time on both legendary systems.

En-suite safari tents, excellent riverside dining and evenings around the campfire complete an experience that blends serious fishing with classic African wilderness.

Gassa Camp offers a truly wild Tigerfish adventure on a protected 120-kilometre stretch of the Faro River in northern Cameroon. This is raw, remote water where three species of Tigerfish thrive in heavy current, rocky runs and submerged structure. Here, anglers target aggressive fish that smash streamers with explosive intent, delivering fast takes and powerful fights in a setting that feels untouched and untamed.

Fishing is organised across rotating beats to keep pressure light and water rested throughout the season. Accessed by 4×4 and guided by experienced local teams, each day focuses on covering structure, seams and deeper holding water where Tigerfish lie in wait. Accommodation is split between Upper and Lower Camp, both offering authentic West African bush comfort with private en-suite rooms and communal dining overlooking the river.

Evenings are simple and atmospheric, with freshly prepared meals and the sounds of the African night providing the backdrop to one of the continent’s most adventurous Tigerfish programmes.
