Guided Camp Steinfjord Sea Fishing Norway Fully Guided Sea Fishing

Tour Code NOR056

Sportquest Exclusive

Our fully guided sea fishing trips to Norway are always incredibly popular, offering solo anglers the opportunity to fish as part of a group and, through the years, have been responsible for forming lifelong fishing friendships. In addition, they alleviate the pressures of driving the boats and finding the fish, as the guides will do this for you, leaving you to concentrate purely on the fishing. At Camp Steinfjord, we run different sets of guided weeks throughout the year, with one dedicated Skrei Cod week during the early part of the season and one peak mixed fishing week during the middle part.

The camp is located on the famous island of Senja, the country’s second-biggest island. It carries a long tradition of fishing, having previously been used as a local fish factory, which offers a clue about the quality of the angling in the region. It now provides travelling rods with a range of generous facilities, including comfortable accommodations, premium boats, a seaside restaurant and, of course, some fantastic mixed sea fishing opportunities for all manner of species, like Cod, Halibut, Coalfish and Plaice, to mention just a few.

Our fully guided weeks are based on four anglers sharing transfers, accommodation (based on single rooms), a boat, fishing (based on eight hour days) and a professional guide.

Guided Sea Fishing In Norway

At Camp Steinfjord, we run two weeks at different times of the year, with one based in April during the early part of the season, designed for those anglers looking to target the giant Skrei Cod and another during July for those looking to target several species, especially Halibut, Coalfish and Plaice.

Skrei Cod Fishing

During the early part of the season, the leading quarry for travelling anglers is the famous Skrei Cod. For those who don’t know, the name ‘Skrei’ literally means ‘to migrate’, precisely what millions of Cod do every season: journey from the Barents Sea back to their spawning grounds. These vast shoals of giant Cod, some of the most significant found anywhere in the world, can be caught offshore at the camp and specimens over 50lb are not unusual.

Mixed Sea Fishing

As the season progresses, the Skrei Cod disappear, leaving just the resident fish, which are plentiful. With the Halibut season opening on April 20th, these giant flatfish become a primary target as they venture into shallower water, but along with these, it’s also possible to target and catch good-sized Coalfish, Wolffish, Plaice and Ling.

Boats & Guides

Camp Steinfjord offers an array of different vessels, but new for 2024, they’ve introduced three new guide boats kitted out with all the safety equipment required by Norwegian law. These guide boats are Alumarin 760’s and 830’s, perfect for accommodating four anglers and a guide, plus fishing tackle. The company has a long history of building quality boats designed for the rigours of sea fishing in Norwegian waters, and they are safe and stable. They feature powerful Suzuki engines, Lowrance elite ti2 fishfinder and chartplotter combos, plus a VHF radio.

At Camp Steinfjord, there are four onsite English-speaking guides. These guides are professionals and experts at navigating the offshore waters and finding the fish. They are well experienced and know where to fish at which states of the tides. In addition, they will drive the boats and be on hand throughout the week to offer advice on rigs, tackle and baits, land your fish, and take that perfect picture for your fishing album.

Note: Each day the guide will talk to you all as a group to decide what you’d like to fish for and make a plan for the day. One of the nice things about the camp is some of the best marks can be as close as a fifteen minute steam from the cabins.

Tackling Up For Fishing

Like most of our camps in Norway, a wide variety of fishing methods work, all being fished on the drift, allowing your boat to cover more ground and explore fish-holding hotspots. Rubber shads, like the Savage Gear Cutbait Herring, are the most popular choice for the Skrei Cod in the spring and general fishing throughout the year. These lures can be used in varying depths of water and work best when slowly bounced along or just off the bottom of the sea bed.

If you’re looking to concentrate your efforts on targeting Halibut, the shads mentioned above will work and account for a good number of fish, but we recommend fishing with a Coalfish dead bait on a long flowing trace, anti-twist lead and a large, strong circle hook. Lower this set up to the bottom, then wind up a few turns of your reel handle to fish it off the sea bed. The Halibut’s eyes are on the top of their heads, so they need to be able to see it as it drifts over them.

Over the last few years, especially when fishing in shallow water, spin fishing for Halibut has increased hugely in popularity. For those who don’t know, medium/large-sized rubber Sandeel imitations are used and cast away from the boat before being slowly retrieved as they bounce along the bottom.

For the smaller species, bait fishing is the name of the game. For the Plaice, small hooks baited with frozen prawns catch plenty of fish, while for the likes of Redfish and Wolffish, baited pirks, feathers, hokkais or gummi macs are one of the best options.

Are you travelling to Camp Steinfjord and want to avoid taking your own tackle? Then it’s no problem; the camp has a vast range of quality tackle for hire, with rods and reels from leading manufacturers like Penn and Shimano. If you take your own tackle and need to stock up on any items throughout your visit, there is also a well-stocked tackle shop onsite.

Accommodation

For our guided trips, we utilise the camp’s villa, which has two floors and a total of 8 beds. These are divided into four bedrooms, three on the lower floor and one on the upper floor, meaning each angler has a single room.

There are two toilets, one on each floor, one with a shower. On the second floor, there is the kitchen connected to the living room, a bedroom and a lovely terrace where you can sit and enjoy the views while drinking your morning coffee. The villa is the perfect option for a guided trip as it offers more space and privacy.

Food & Drink

All the accommodations listed above have facilities for cooking your own meals, but on-site, there is also the ‘Fat Cod restaurant.

This newly refurbished restaurant by the seaside offers 65 seats and stunning views over Steinfjorden. The restaurant is open to the public seven days a week for lunch and dinner. The chefs use fresh and local produce, and the menu is varied. What better way to finish off a great day of fishing than with a drink and great food in the company of friends?

At least once a month, there are pub nights with entertainment. These events offer the opportunity to meet the local people or other tourists and enjoy food, drinks and music.

Note: The restaurant is open during the summer season and offers servings during the off-season for group bookings. Booking a full catering package, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is also possible.
